Job Description
Description: The Accessibility Review Project Worker is primarily responsible for investigating and reporting
upon the universal accessibility of the Simon Fraser Student Society (SFSS) for students with disabilities. They
will review the Simon Fraser Student Society’s events, programs, activities, and communications materials to
identify universal accessibility challenges, barrier free environments and opportunities for improvement.
Goals: To produce a report that identifies opportunities to promote universal accessibility and barrier free
environments to all of the Society’s operations, activities, events, and communications materials and to make
recommendation(s) for funding allocations from the Accessibility Fund based on the findings of the review.
Working Relationship(s) Role in Organizational Structure: The Accessibility Review Project Worker will report
to the Student Union Organiser who manages the Student Union Resource Office. The Student Union Resource
office provides support and resources to the Accessibility Fund Advisory Committee. The Student Union
Resource Office staff report to the Executive Director who reports to the Executive Committee.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Design, coordinate, and administer a survey of members with self-identified disabilities to gather information
about barriers to their participation in SFSS activities, SFSS groups such as clubs, and student unions, and
their campus experiences.
2. Conduct focus groups with members with self-identified disabilities to gather information about barriers to
their participation in SFSS activities, SFSS groups, and their campus experiences.
3. Interview relevant SFSS staff about opportunities to increase the accessibility of their departments/offices
4. Review communications materials produced by the Society (e.g. SFSS website and social media) and evaluate
its accessibility for students with disabilities.
5. Liaise with Students United for Disability Support, SFU Centre for Students with Disabilities, SFSS clubs and
student unions to discuss the needs of members with disabilities in different SFSS and SFU departments
6. Research and write a report with recommendations on how the SFSS can reduce barriers to participation in
SFSS activities for members with disabilities
7. If applicable, recommend general training materials or new equipment to facilitate increased participation of
members with disabilities search, compile, and/or create general training materials for the organization
Required Skills and Experience:
1. Demonstrated knowledge of issues confronting students with disabilities.
2. Ability to work well independently.
3. Familiarity with the role of the Student Society and with its role as advocate and representation for its
members.
4. Strong organizing skills, good time-management skills and the ability to make rational decisions.
5. Strong oral communication skills, including group facilitation and relationship building.
6. Strong written communication skills, including report writing and creating promotional materials.
7. Strong research skills
