Front Office Message
The season has begun! After months of preparation from our off field administration and a great preseason, the first ball across our six men’s grades was bowled last Saturday. Our first century maker has
arrived in Tom Matson who powered to 146 in Fifth Grade. Unfortunately First Grade were defeated by
Randwick-Petersham in a close one day match last Sunday, while they face a monster 378 run chase
against UNSW this Saturday.
Our women now begin in just two Saturdays and we cannot wait to see our Tigresses in action.
Congratulations must also go to Kira Churchland, Ange Reakes, Nicole Goodwin, Ellyse Perry and
Rachael Kent who last week played in a City Country representative fixture.
In off field news the 114th Annual Backstreet Tour takes place, while the Sri Lankan Celebration of
Cricket is being held on October 25.
Good luck to all teams this weekend.
Tiger recognised for International Cricketer of the Year.
Ellyse Perry has been recognised for the top honour in women’s International Cricket this year after
being one of four women to be short-listed for the award earlier this week. Unfortunately fellow
Australian women’s player Shelley Nitschke took the award out but it is only a sign for bigger and better
things for the young 19 year old.

Ellyse managed an outstanding season that included being the leading wicket taker in the WNCL for the
year and then being selected for national duties in both the Rose Bowl and the 20/20 World Cup.
Representing Australia versus New Zealand in the Rose Bowl Ellyse took 18 wickets at 15.66 including
career best figures of 5 for 31. Ellyse then travelled to the West Indies for the 20/20 World Cup that
Australia secured after her man of the match performance. Bowling the last over Ellyse strangled the
New Zealand run chase finally winning the match after stopping the ball with her foot. Quick thinking
and good bowling saw the Women’s team return as champions with the men looking on from the
player’s balcony. Ellyse managed 15 wickets at 11.66 to top the Australian bowling tally and looks
forward to bigger and better things next year.
The Sydney Tigers have been lucky enough to secure her again this year and in a masterstroke Ellyse
will be the first woman ever to play in the Poidevin-Gray Shield representing the Tigers on Ladies Day
(21st of November). We look to have a big crowd at Drummoyne oval as we celebrate the inaugural
ladies day for the club, so come down and be part of the festivities.
Congratulations to Ellyse and we wish all the best in the upcoming year in both cricket and soccer.
Matson crushes UNSW in Round 1 'Batting Feast'
Tigers in the hunt in Round 1
Round 1 of the Sydney Grade competition began today. With a mixed result for the Sydney Cricket club.
In an opening round master piece Tom Matson was the highlight for Sydney smashing his way to his
first ton in Sydney Grade cricket (146) and was well supported by Daniel Legge –Nicholls who fell
agonisingly short of the ton in his debut performance knocking up a well made 93. Their knocks lifted
Sydney 5th grade to 5(dec) for 320.
Tom Matson strode to the crease and from the start plastered the UNSW attack to all ends of the oval in
a masterly innings. A clinical display of batting saw Matson pass all the milestones with ease and if it
wasn’t for sheer tiredness early on in the season 200 was on the cards. He was well supported all day
and Sydney monstered 320 in just 69 overs and are very well placed with UNSW slumping to 2-27 after
an attacking declaration from captain Andrew Downie. Josh Martin was the early destroyer striking twice
late in the day.
In other grades Sydney are chasing a big total in first grade on a flat Drummoyne wicket come week 2.
With 10 wickets in hand a deep batting order Sydney are certainly not out of the contest. Jon Smith
bowled well for his 2-52 and Mick Polson on debut for the club ran out Dawson stopping him on 125.
Sydney 2nd grade again put in a stellar effort with the ball knocking over UNSW for 166 Moncrieff 4-49
at his consistent best and Ortiz on debut 3-28. Unfortunately batting woes from last year haunt them

and Sam Mullens holds the key for a Sydney victory there.
Sydney 3rd grade started rusty giving UNSW 100 before taking 10 for less than 200 at Ryde Oval, Nick
McMurray and Stephen King were the pick of the bowlers there UNSW all out for 294. Jon New is off to
rollicking start moving Sydney through to 1-37 in reply.
Sydney 4th grade saw a mixed day for Sydney where neither bat or ball were the real winner, Captain
Matt Grice and fast bowler Aaron Shore kept Sydney well in the game with 6 wickets between them,
they will be happy to chase 234 next week on flat David Phillips oval.
Sydney 6th grade side has had a promising start showing their skills and demonstrated to the selectors
that they are pressing for higher grade positions, with a posting of 276 against Randwick-Petersham.
The highlights were a quickfire 35 from Clinton Doughan with 4 sixes and 4 fours. A well crafted 49 by
Mathew Matson as if he was chasing his brothers 5th grade total. James Dunn's well placed 35 and
Charlie Booth's 41 in a Tiger tail end wagging with Abdul Amiri's 45, was a great sight to see. The pair
put on 88 runs to place the Metro Cup players in a commanding position going into our bowling innings.
Progress Scores Round 1 Week 1:
First grade: Sydney 0-8 versus UNSW 5(dec)-379 (Smith 2-52)
Second Grade: Sydney 8-108 (Mullens 23* versus UNSW 10-166 (Moncrieff 4-49, Ortiz 3-28)

Tigresses on Rep Duty
First grade’s lady Tiger Kira Churchland has already achieved big things this season. One minute she
was having dinner in her country town of Orange, and the next she was receiving a phone call informing
her of her selection in the NSW country team.
Playing in two 20/20s against the NSW City team, this competition is part of one of many opportunities
for the best players in NSW to showcase their skills and talents in the hope of an ultimate selection in
the NSW Breakers team. The City Vs Country tournament that Kira was apart of consisted of current

NSW and Australian players, and Kira had to deal with some initial nerves! “To be completely honest at
the start it was a tad daunting…it helps that fellow tigers Angela Reakes, Nicole Goodwin and Rachael
Kent were in my team.” It didn’t take long for Kira to absolutely relish the opportunity. “It was awesome
to see how the best players in NSW and Australia go about their cricket.”
Kira is hoping to continue her great performance this long weekend when she heads to Newcastle for
the annual NSW Country Championships. Representing Western zone, who have won the competition
for the past 2 years, Kira hopes she can continue her great form and help the girls push for another win.
“The aim is definitely to win number 3. I believe we have a good team and will definitely push for that 3rd
title.” The Western zone team will also feature our brand new Tiger Bec Cady and we wish her the best
of luck also.
With the grade season only a week away, Kira hopes to back up some great performances last season
with many more. “My major goal this season is to perform my best for the club and team, whether that is
scoring runs or taking wickets (hopefully get a few Michelle’s this year, after I was stranded on 4 wickets
a few times last year). I believe that this season will be an awesome one and show the other clubs that
we are a force to be reckoned with.”
Here at the tigers, we are so proud of Kira and all of our rep players including Rachael Kent for also
making her Country Debut, for all their achievements and we wish Kira and the girls the best of luck this
weekend and in the upcoming season.
Go the Tiges!
Chords Heading Home
Our great friend and true Balmainiac, Dave Chordia, is due to leave our shores this Monday after a 12
month stay with us. ‘Chords’ has left a positive and lasting impact on everyone at our Club and it is with
sadness that we see him leave.
Arriving under the wing of Bally in October, he instantly found himself at home at Drummoyne Oval,
Ruby L’otel and Bally’s floor where he spent his first six weeks. However, never one to whinge, he
rolled up his sleeves and got stuck into training and put some scores together for threes and fours as
the season went on. He proved a vital piece of Gricey’s team last year in fours as they made the semi
finals.

The Sydney Cricket Club is a better place for having Chords within it. His good nature, friendliness,
ability to boost batters confidence with his off spin bowling, and supportive words were felt by all
throughout the season. As a bloke, he is unmatched around the Club and we are privileged that Chords
was with us over the past 12 months.
We wish Dave all the best for his future and know that he will stay in touch with us for a long time to
come. He has guaranteed to fly back in March to help support Gricey’s Heroes if and when they make
their run for a premiership. We certainly wish we see Chords again in the future, thank him for his
generous and outstanding contribution to the Tigers, and hope he has a successful time back in London
schmoozing the world’s biggest film stars.

A huge thank you to all of those members, both playing and non-playing for attending the SCG XI Picnic
Day and Season Launch last Sunday. Unfortunately First Grade couldn’t quite bring home he right
result, but a big crowd was on hand all day. A thanks must go to Mark Atkinson, Jon Moss, Alyssa
Healy and Ellyse Perry for their time and thoughts on all cricket happenings during the lunch break, and
a fantastic time was had by all of the junior cricketers on the field. The Club is committed to engaging
