National Referral Mechanism Statistics – End of Year
Summary 2014
This report presents a summary of the number of potential victims of trafficking
referred in to the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) in 2014.
The figures used are from the NRM data with a cut off date of 02/01/2015. Some of
the cases have yet to be concluded by the Competent Authorities and decisions on
their trafficking status made. The NRM is a ‘living’ process and data should be
considered provisional until all cases are concluded. Some values may differ in
future reports, or from previous reports as additional information comes to light
through the duration of the cases and the records are amended accordingly.
This report does not provide any analysis of the picture of human trafficking in the
UK. It provides figures relating to the number of potential victims that have been
referred in to the NRM process during 2014.
NRM Statistics 2014
In 2014 the UK National Referral Mechanism (NRM) received 2,340 referrals of
potential victims of trafficking (PVoT); this represents a 34% increase on 2013
referral totals. The PVoTs were reported to be from 96 countries of origin; this
represents a 14% decrease on 2013 country of origin totals 1 .
The 2,340 referrals were comprised of 1,432 females (61%) and 906 males (39%)
and 2 (<1%) recorded as transgender. 1,669 (71%) were referred for adult
exploitation categories and 671 (29%) referred for exploitation as a minor.

In 2014 the UK National Referral Mechanism (NRM) received 2,114 referrals of
potential victims of trafficking (PVoT) first encountered in England; this represents
a 36% increase on 2013 referral totals and 90% of all UK referrals to the NRM.
The 2,114 referrals were comprised of 1,316 females (62%), 796 males (38%) and
2 (<1%) were recorded as transgender with 1487 (70%) referred for adult
exploitation categories, 627 (30%) being referred for exploitation as a minor.

ANNEX B - NORTHERN IRELAND - NRM Statistics 2014
In 2014 the UK National Referral Mechanism (NRM) received 45 referrals of
potential victims of trafficking (PVoT) first encountered in Northern Ireland; this
represents a 10% increase on 2013 referral totals and 2% of all UK referrals to the
NRM.
The 45 referrals were comprised of 16 females (36%) and 29 males (64%) with 37
(82%) referred for adult exploitation categories and 8 (18%) being referred for
exploitation as a minor.

ANNEX D - WALES - NRM Statistics 2014
In 2014 the UK National Referral Mechanism (NRM) received 70 referrals of
potential victims of trafficking (PVoT) first encountered in Wales; this represents a
40% increase on 2013 referral totals and 3% of all UK referrals to the NRM.
The 70 referrals were comprised of 38 females (54%) and 32 males (46%) with 59
(84%) referred for adult exploitation categories and 11 (16%) being referred for
exploitation as a minor.
