The National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) is an organization that
provides an opportunity for people that are confined to wheelchairs to participate in
sports at extremely high levels. This association helps these people display their
athletic abilities, because even though they might not have use of their legs they still
have great athletic potential and the NWBA helps these people display their athletic
abilities. The mission statement of the NWBA is, “In our pursuit of excellence, the
National Wheelchair Basketball Association provides qualified individuals with
physical disabilities the opportunity to play, learn and compete in the sport of
wheelchair basketball.” The NWBA is a great organization and provides great
opportunities for people who have physical disabilities. The NWBA has many events
that it holds. One of these events is the 2011 NWBA National Championships and it
will be held April 7-10, 2011 in Denver, CO. This is one of the major events that the
NWBA hosts. Some other events include games at the collegiate level; many college
teams have a wheelchair basketball team. Another even that is being held is the
2011 women’s regional tournament. The divisions of the NWBA include, women’s,
junior’s, intercollegiate, division 3, and championship division. All of these divisions
provide opportunities for people of all ages to participate in wheelchair basketball.
This association provides a great opportunity for people that are confined to wheel
chairs and are physically handicapped. Although these players cannot walk they still
play extremely hard and these games are very competitive. The games are
extremely entertaining to watch and it is fascinating to see how well these players
can work their wheel chairs and play basketball. The games are extremely fast pace
and it is great to see the extreme athletic ability that all of these players posses.
Ultimately the NWBA is an association that provides a great opportunity for people
suffering from physical disabilities to participate in an extremely competitive and
fun game. The NWBA provides opportunities that would otherwise not be present.
