Writing a Thesis Statement

Your thesis statement is an educated opinion supported with well-researched facts in
order to convince the reader that your argument is valid.
Your thesis states the main point of your essay. It does not simply announce your subject – it
specifies the point you will make.
A thesis should:
1. identify a limited subject
2. make clear your attitude toward the subject
3. focus the reader's attention on specific features of the subject, e.g., what you find:
a. true
b. interesting
c. valuable
EXAMPLE :
Your Essay title: Controversy Surrounds Violent Video Games
Your thesis statement: The reliance on aggression as entertainment in video games
promotes acceptance of violence in our society.
ASK YOURSELF:
Does my thesis statement make an assertion about the topic?
Is my assertion limited to one idea?
Is my assertion specific and significant?
Does my thesis statement convey my purpose and opinion?
Some formulas for thesis statements:
A. Although most readers of _______ have argued that _______, closer examination shows that
_______.
B. _______ uses _______ and _____ to prove that ________.
C. Phenomenon X is a result of the combination of __________, __________, and _________.
D. Though _______________, seems like ___________, in reality ______________________.
E. ___________________ is necessary to ________________ and therefore _____________.
Choose 10 random topics that you would want to write about and create a thesis
statement for that topic. Use the formulas outlined in the packet. Do not use the
same formula or blueprint for each thesis. Try to vary the formula and words you
use. Your statement does not have to be truthful. Right now, I just want you to get
the lingo down. Follow my examples:
Topic: South Park
Thesis: Although most viewers of South Park have argued that the show is highly offensive, closer
examination shows that the show is actually based on reality thus serving as a social commentary
on issues such as racism, sexuality, and politics.
Topic: Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream
Thesis: Though Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream seems like a harmless delicious treat, in reality it is an
alluring substance used to control the minds of the world’s most important people such as Kelly
Ripa, George W. Bush, and Adam Sandler.
Topic: Broccoli
Thesis: For years, people all over the world have been under the impression that broccoli is a
healthy vegetable, but new research shows that broccoli can have damaging effects on the kidney.
Topic: Viva Piñata
Thesis: The popular video game Viva Piñata is not only offensive, but it is causing piñatas
everywhere to commit shameful acts of violence such as murder, rape, and grand theft auto.
Topic: Anchorman
Thesis: Masked as a harmless slapstick comedy, Anchorman starring Will Ferrell is a harmful film,
defacing the name of what it means to be a newscaster and should be banned from cable TV.
