President’s Welcome
Dear Friends,
I am very much looking forward to welcoming you to Bristol. I first came to the city
as a medical student in 1975 and much has changed in both the city and me in 41
years. We have a very exciting scientific programme with a number of international
speakers of repute. In particular, we are honoured that the American Society of
Plastic Surgeons is going to be our Guest Nation and Dr David Song MD, their
President, will be presenting to us. I am also delighted to welcome back to Bristol
Professor David David of Adelaide, who will be presenting the John Potter Lecture
on his enormous experience in cleft and craniofacial surgery.
Bristol is a major UK tourist destination with good rail, road and airlines, and there
really is something for the entire family to do - I am always willing to give guided
tours of the historic city of Bristol!
Kind regards,
Nigel Mercer

BFIRST Stand 21
Contact: [email protected]
Website: www.bfirst.org.uk
BFIRST’s vision is of a world where surgeons and hospital staff in resource-poor
countries have the necessary expertise and have the necessary supplies to be able
to perform reconstructive surgery and rehabilitate patients by themselves, without
our help, but we have to get the expertise there and make it self-sustaining first!
How?
BFIRST’s mission is to train surgeons working in some of the poorest countries
in the world by sending BFIRST Consultant Plastic Surgeons and their teams of
relevant allied healthcare professionals on regular training trips tailored to the
local needs in reconstructive surgery. We aim to make partnerships between
units abroad and BFIRST teams, so our training maintains the local relevance and
tracks progress.
We have also uniquely built in an assessment of the BFIRST teams by the local
surgeons and staff, and we continue to monitor the local surgeons’ progress
through ISCP based assessment tools.
Why?
Through reconstructive plastic surgery, we aim to release some of the world’s
most vulnerable children and adults from a state of poverty caused by a deformity
or a disability.

The aim is to collect information about all major free and pedicled flap operations carried out in the UK and through
that, to assess the quality of care we provide for patients. Participation in audit is part of professional practice and
integral to your appraisal and revalidation as required by the GMC. By participating in this audit, you will be able to
use the data for your appraisal and revalidation portfolio. This audit will allow appropriate comparison of clinical
performance with national and international standards, and provide useful data on changing trends.
The cross-speciality UK National Flap Registry is supported by the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and
Aesthetic Surgeons, British Association of Head and Neck Oncologists, British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgeons, the Association of Breast Surgery and the British Society of Surgery of the Hand.
