A combination of Carlingford Gold having one or two more experienced players and our boys still learning the ropes meant we were down 5-0 at half time. The second half saw our team improve remarkably with a lot more possession. Mitchell made some good saves in goal. Jason (our new recruit), Declan, Lachlan and Bradley showed that, given the chance, they can move the ball upfield. We even had Oscar and Noah coming up with chances at goal. The way the boys are learning (and enjoying playing), it’s only a matter of time before we get on the scoreboard. -Glenn U/6 Reds manager Carlingford Blue 1 Newington U6 green 10 Well the Season started on a great note for the U6 Greens, notching up a 10 -1 victory over Carlingford on Saturday. It has been an incredible turnaround for this team who has held on to most of its younger players from last year, with the improvement quite remarkable. In our first game last year we were on the reverse side of a similar score line and it just goes to show how much these kids improve over a year. Malik was outstanding with 6 goals, showing skills well beyond his years. Seth who last year would refuse to do anything but Goal keep, scored 3 himself, and saved just as many with some outstanding defending. Osama also scored and was unlucky not to pick up a couple more, with some shots shaving the post. Luke was amongst the thick of things again, always looking for the ball with some aggressive offence and defense. Dan is improving each week with his eagerness to become more involved as is Mariska who had more touches this game than almost the entire of last season. Liam has improved leaps and bounds in only his third game and probably saved a couple of goals with some great defense. Unfortunately Ibrahim saw little of the ball at Goal keeper in the first half but was eager for involvement in the second. A great start to the year kids, and what is most pleasing is the level of enjoyment being shown throughout the game. Keep it up … Adam McCredie White 3 Newington U7 0 McCredie White won the toss Newington Gunners kicked off running East to West. The game started off well, with Newington applying pressure to the McCredie team. Their goalie was required to stop a few attempts at goal by Belinda Anderson-Sharp. From that point McCredie, then gained field position and gave Jaxson McKenzie some work to do, keeping the ball out of the goal and many goal kicks. Thankfully, he was well supported in keeping the ball out, by some good defensive play by Vincent Xiao, Julian Frost and Luke Nilsson. 9 minutes into the first half Mason Lowrie took the ball upfield and passed it to Belinda who took the ball all the way to the other end, but was beaten by some fancy footwork. Such is the tale of the 1st half, up and down the full length of the field, with neither side being able to convert possession into points. The second half was a very different story, McCredie White seemed to be camped in our half but this time managed to register a goal in about the 4th minute. 2 minutes or so later another ball trickled past the goal line to register a second goal for McCredie. A terrific run up the field by Tony Pang in the 30th minute, looked like putting pressure on the McCredie goalie, but alas the shot was wide of the goal. A big goal kick by Mason led to another great run upfield by Belinda, however, this too went wide of the goal. Some good defence was put up by Daniel Nguyen in the second half against some strong attacking runs but McCredie finished strongly, with a terrific high kick screaming through the goal to register McCredie’s 3rd and final goal for the game. Many thanks to all the parents that showed up and supported the team. Thanks for your efforts. -Ben Nilsson Newington U8 5 St Michaels B 0 From the first whistle the Newington U8’s went on the attack. Daigo made a great break down the left touchline and crossed the ball into the area where one of the opposition defenders tried to catch it with 2 hands. Penalty. Tryston gave the goalkeeper no chance from the spot. 1 – 0. From the kickoff it was Alex Palmer’s turn to take the ball up deep into opposition territory after a few scrambles in the penalty area with Thomas and Dante working hard and coming close to scoring it was Tryston who picked up a lose ball and fired it into the net. Goal. 2 – 0. We then had some defending to do as St Michaels rallied to try and get back into the game. Great defensive work by Sean and Alex Park made sure that the attack was snuffed out quickly and Ruben kept his clean sheet in goal. In the final attack of the half some great build up play by Tyler and Kevin gave Lawrence an opportunity for a shot on goal which he took superbly to make it 3 – 0 at half time. Dante swapped goal keeping duties with Ruben and we reshuffled the defensive and offensive lines to give everyone a chance in attack. It didn’t take long for Ruben to make an impact with some excellent runs down both wings. Sylvan who came on as sub at half time also gave fresh legs to the attack and it was not long before Tryston poached yet another goal for his hatrick. 4 – 0. The defence had very little to do although Daigo made some important tackles to stop any breakaways. Thomas was very busy upfront and won a penalty after being brought down in the area but unfortunately the goalkeeper made a good save from his well taken strike. After several more goal mouth scrambles where Sylvan, Tyler and Alex all had shots saved off the line it was Trystan who again managed to find the back of the net. That topped off a strong all round performance by all the U8 players, I was very proud of the way you all played. Final score 5 – 0. - Dave OLQP Falcons Q 3 Newington U10 0 After some good results in the trial matches, the U10s were confident leading in to the first competition match of the season. However we were about to get a lesson on the realities of playing in Division One as we came up against the OLQP Falcons Q, who finished near the top of the division last year. We started brightly but soon found our goal under attack from this fast and well-disciplined team. With Anthony playing well in goals we held them out for long periods but eventually conceded 2 goals to go into half time down 0-2. In the second half we played much better and had several scoring changes, probably our best chance falling to Nuno from a great corner by Greg. Cameron and Lewis also had opportunities in attack, but we failed to take our chances and eventually succumbed 0-3. Michael, Jason, Brendan, Mark, Jeysun, Riley and Sean all had outstanding moments in defence but overall we were no match for the speed and fitness of our opponents. The match was a real eye-opener and gives us a good idea of what is required to compete in Division One, with lots to work on in practice. To their credit the boys remained positive and are looking forward to a re-match. Finally a special mention to Liam to missed the match through illness, get well soon, we need you! Robert. OLQP Falcons 0 Newington U12 4 What a great start to the season! This was a very enjoyable match to watch, and to play in judging by the smiles on faces at full time. After some good teamwork in front of the box following a corner, Muhammad scored our first goal of the season with a great strike. A good passing game kept up the pressure, but resolute defence was needed to keep the 1-0 lead at half time. A last line clearance by Alessia and a great chase back by Maz and Ben Adams typified the determination, but everyone was contributing to a good team effort. Our 10 players put together a great second half, scoring 3 unanswered goals against a full team. A typically good cross from Ben Adams was finished well by Jonno Spencer. A super shot from Ben Spencer was denied by the cross bar, but then a somewhat skied kick gave Ben the goal – that’s football! John K made it 4 to complete a good win. Highlights for me were the well organized and committed defence, and the great passing that repeatedly put players into gaps. Jonno led by example as captain, and it was good to see plenty of encouragement and pats on the back by everyone. I could name all of the players for a great performance, but in a difficult choice, 2 players received a joint player of the match award: Alessia for a sparkling debut with fearless and untiring defence and some great through balls, and Ben Spencer, who carved them up with his attacking runs.
