PROSPECTUS 2014-15 Mankar College Affiliated to the University of Burdwan Established 1987 Accredited by NAAC at ‘B’ COLLEGE MOTTO Sa Vidya Ya Vimuktaye (KNOWLEDGE LEADS TO EMANCIPATION) AIMS OF THE COLLEGE EDUCATING THOSE WHO NEED MOST: FROM IGNORANCE TO ENLIGHTENMENT. FROM NEGLECT TO CARE: OPENING THE WORLD TO THE SUB-ALTERN. REPAYING THE DEBT TO THE SOCIETY GENERATING THE SPIRIT OF HARMONY: GROWING OUT OF THE SELF AND LEARNING TO BE ACCOMMODATIVE. GROOMING A DISCIPLINED MEMBER OF THE SOCIETY. STRENGTHENING THE SPIRIT OF INDEBTEDNESS TO THE INSTITUTION THAT OFFERS THE LIGHT OF KNOWLEDGE LEARNING TO RESPECT THE SELF AND OTHERS. 1 THE BACKGROUND Mankar College celebrated its Silver Jubilee in the year 2012. By serving the under-privileged students for twenty five years it has only upheld the rich tradition of the locality, a seat of learning disseminating the fruits of knowledge to a large underdeveloped area on the border of and including the jungle-mahal. The inhabitants feel proud of the fact that Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar established a normal school here in the mid-19th century, which in course of time has developed into an HS School. The initiative for establishing a college was undertaken by the local people in the late 1960s to have access to the world of higher education. After years of struggle the college ultimately saw the light of the day on 26th September 1987 in a five acre plot of land donated by Smt. Renubala Devi of Mankar. The campus expanded when Sri Bireswar Banerjee and his brothers also donated land. A large number of people of this locality and surroundings have extended their help for the development of the college. Of late Smt. Kanaklata Banerjee and her nephew Soumitra Mukherjee have donated 75 decimal of land including a house to the college on which the construction of a girls’ hostel with accommodation for 33 is nearing completion. In 1987 the journey began with six Arts subjects, sixty-three students and six teachers in a thatched roofed mud-walled hut. Quarter of a century later the college today proudly offers all three streams – Arts, Commerce and Science with Honours in eleven subjects. Almost seven hundred students take admission in First Year Arts alone. Huge buildings have been constructed in a spacious green campus. In spite of the sea change in the appearance of the college, the performance of the students in the University Examinations has remained exemplary right from the beginning. The success rate over the years has remained uniformly outstanding -- almost one hundred percent on an average. By virtue of its students, non-teaching members of the staff and the teachers, Mankar College is now recognized as one of the premier institutions affiliated to the University of Burdwan. The ambiance here is calm and quiet, traditional yet modern, disciplined and accommodative -- ideal for the pursuit of knowledge. In 2009 the Peer Team of National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) visited the college, assessed it and on its recommendation the Executive Committee of NAAC accredited the college in grade ‘B’ with CGPA of 2.21 on four point scale. The percentage of the score of the college is 55. LOCATION OF THE COLLEGE Mankar is well connected by both railways and roadways. The college is on the Bhatkunda highway, two kilometers from Mankar Railway Station and about a kilometer from the Mankar Bus Stop. It takes less than twenty minutes to reach the college from the railway station on foot. The buses plying to and from Bhedia stop almost at the college gate itself. 2 MEMBERS OF THE GOVERNING BODY 1. The admission form for honours subjects can also be downloaded from the college website. Generally the forms are issued for ten days. Separate merit lists are published for Honours courses within five days of the last day of submission of duly filled in forms. Merit list for the Honours courses are prepared on the basis of grade point (GP) which is calculated as: GP = MP + HS + Sub× 2. (MP = Total marks obtained in eight papers of seven subjects excluding optional subject in Madhyamik Pariksha or equivalent examination. HS = Total marks obtained in best five subjects including two languages but excluding EVS in HS or equivalent examination. Sub = marks obtained in HS in the subject in which honours is sought. For Computer Science marks obtained in Mathematics in HS will be taken as subject marks in case Computer Science was not a subject in the HS course.) After the completion of admission to Honours courses, applicants for General Courses will be offered direct admission. No merit list will be published. But as the intake capacity of the college is fixed by the University, there may be a cut-off marks on the basis of marks obtained in best five subjects in HS examination, below which no student will be admitted. The cut-off marks is determined by the admission committee considering the ground reality. Because of the University restrictions regarding number of students admitted and the seating capacity of the class rooms, in first year BA, first 300 students are allowed to choose Bengali, History and Political Science and first 150 students to choose Philosophy and Sanskrit as General (pass course) subjects if they desire. After the seats are allotted to the Honours students, the remaining seats will be offered to the General course students.
