Brownell Talbot Varsity Football Standard Operating Guidelines 2010 Mission Statement: As individuals: We allow the game of football to teach us the value of hard work, competition, teamwork, character, faithfulness, commitment, persistence, and discipline. As a team: we work for a common purpose to play disciplined/efficient football. In everything we do we will put forth our full effort to compete to the very best of our abilities. We expect excellence, with the understanding that excellence is not a sometimes thing, but an all-the-time thing that is applied to everything we do. Program Goals: 1. 2. That every young man, who goes through the BT football program, is a better man after having gone through; a better citizen, and one day a better husband and father. Win. Doing whatever it takes, anything and everything as long as it holds up and does not violate goal number one. Objectives for winning 1. Take care of the ball + Create turnovers = Win turnover battle. 2. Do your job. 3. Play with great effort, focus, and physicality. 4. Raiders don’t beat Raiders – elimination of mental errors/ penalties Equation for Winning Talent + Attitude + Preparation = Performance = Confidence = Success Team Policies and Procedures: Rules 1. Be respectful. This applies to player’s conduct toward coaches, teammates, administrators, teachers, parents, opponents, referees, and fans. 2. Be on time. 3. Practice is absolutely mandatory. - Any absence from practice, unless prior approved by Coach Mancuso, will be considered an unexcused absence. Being at practice is the expectation and does not guarantee playing time; but missing practice will limit playing time. If practice attendance is poor it may result in a player not dressing for game/games or dismissal from team. 4. No alcohol or recreational drug use. Anyone caught drinking or using recreation drugs in the off season will be dealt with at the head coach’s discretion; anyone caught in season will serve a minimum mandatory 2 game suspension (1st offense of career). Additional offenses will require longer suspension and likely dismissal from the team. These rules are not open to discussion; other situations will be looked at on a case by case basis, and are subject to the coach’s discretion. Violation of team rules will be handled by head coach. Repeated violations can result in suspension or dismissal from team. Expectations of a Raider: Be excellent – excellence does not mean that you are the best at everything; it does not mean that you always win. Excellence is a spirit with which you conduct yourself, always putting forth your best effort. Excellence is not a sometimes thing, it is an all-the-time thing. Hard work – weight room, practice, games. Compete – be a 6 second competitor. 3, 4, and 5 second competitors don’t finish plays, don’t win games. Compete from the start of the play to the end of the play. Have fun. Procedures: Anyone with any problems involving team rules/policies, academic concerns, playing time concerns, or any other issues needs to schedule a time to meet, in a private setting, with Coach Mancuso. There are proper ways to discuss these issues: - 24 Hour Rule – players/parents who have an issue with playing time or a coach’s decision need to wait for 24 hours after a game before speaking with Coach Mancuso. Post game emotions are too high and it puts both the coach and the player/parent in a bad situation; the 24 hours allows a cooling off period, so that the decision can be explained in a logical/respectful manner. o Needs to be understood: My goal is to always speak positively about players in public, but when a player/parent asks to meet with me or speak with me over the phone, you are asking me to be completely/brutally honest. I will be completely honest, so if you ask a question you should be prepared for a real answer. When discussing an issue with a player/parent – I/we will only discuss the player or the parent’s child, not any other players. o Be respectful if you, as a player, have an issue with a coach’s decision. - Pre Game – for away games player’s cell phones will be confiscated upon entering the bus. We do not need the distractions. They will be returned after game, so players may contact their parents. - Post game – after shaking hands, players and coaches will immediately jog into the locker room. Not stopping to talk with anyone. Coaches will address the players in the locker room privately. Academic Policy: Academics always come first. Players are expected to do their very best in the classroom. This applies to, but is not limited to: Respect for your teachers, administrators, and classmates. Having assignments in on time. If a player consistently appears on the ineligibility list, even though he may be eligible by game time, he may not be allowed to play or suit for games until the academic issue is resolved. This will be at the coach’s discretion. If a player is ineligible according to the Brownell Talbot eligibility policy, he will not be allowed to suit up for games. If a player needs to see a teacher he must let a coach prior to doing so. He himself must talk to a coach, not sending someone else to do it. When he returns to practice he must have a legible note from the teacher in order to return to practice. Locker Room Policy: 1. The locker room is to be kept clean. A player’s equipment and personal items are to be kept in their locker with the locker locked. 2. Language in the locker room is to be kept clean. Remember that we share the locker room with other members of the student body. We are to be an example of excellence in all that we do.
