Sequence
• On command, GK1 moves to the ball line and handles a volley or half-volley from GK3, then
foot-works across the goal for a shot from the coach. GK3 may shoot at either post. The
coach serves off the ground
• After facing the second shot, GK 1 exits the goal toward GK2, who enters the goal and
continues the sequence

Playing in and around the penalty area, a goalkeeper and two defenders line up with the defenders
on each post. A server plays the ball into any of the three attackers at the edge of the area. The
defenders become live on attackers first touch. The attacking player who receives the ball cannot
shoot first time but must pass to a team mate. If the defenders win the ball they return it to the
server.
Progression
If a ball gets cleared behind the goals by defender or goalkeeper, the server can throw a ball in
for a header.

Goalkeeper lines up behind a small goal 4 yards wide with two balls a further 2 yards wide and
slightly in front. The server throws/volley’s the ball at head height for GK to save. After making the

Six cones are placed one yard apart. Two flags are placed eight yards apart to form a small goal
between cone and flag. GK starts at the back of the cones and first moves into line with S1 to

ORGANISATION
Two goals are placed on a field two thirds normal size. O1 begins by crossing into area for the GK to
come and claim. The GK calls and then claims the ball and immediately delivers up field for the
two’s X’s. The two X’s go 2v2 against two O’s and try to score past GK at opposite end of field. Play
until finish.
Progression
O1 should have supply of balls – opposite end GK can practice distribution to O1 after finish
This drill can be built up with crosses coming from both sides, add in attackers pressing the
GK and then defenders and attackers, as you wish, to create more game-like situations

• Mark out a 25 x 45 yard area
• Divide players into 3 teams of 4 plus 2 GK’s. One team waits outside the field
• Each of the teams on the field positions one forward in its attacking half
• Playing time is 2/3 minutes
Sequence
• Teams play 4 v. 4 on two goals with goalkeepers
• The objective is to create as many shots as possible on goal, preferably from a distance
• Forwards are not allowed to move back across the centerline; they try to lay balls back,
redirect shots and finish rebounds
• Games conclude after two or three minutes, or three goals
• Rotate teams

• Use resting team players as possession players
• Teams play 5 v.5 with 3 GK’s

Set up two goals facing one another, about 16 yards apart. Divide goalkeepers into Teams A and B.
One keeper from each team stands in the goal; the others wait next to it. GK A has a ball. Keep
extra balls ready in both goals. A shoots at B’s goal, then immediately moves out of the goal and is
replaced by the next keeper in line. B tries to stop or save the ball, then shoots at A’s goal, and so
on. First to ten?
Variations
• Keeper can throw, kick, punt or drop kick the ball
• Change the scoring: Which team can score more goals in the space of 10 mins
• Goals scored with ground balls aimed at the corners count double
• Move the goals closer together to make it easier

corner of this goal, and GK2 dives for the ball, stands up quickly, turns around, kicks the ball a short
distance ahead and then tries to score against GK1 with a well timed instep kick. GK’s switch roles
and positions if GK 2 scores, or after several rounds.

One goalkeeper and six servers with a supply of balls positioned around in a semi-circle five yards
from the goal. Each server has a number and coach calls out one number at a time to strike the ball
at goal to beat the GK.
Progression
Servers should vary height and pace of each shot at goal and give GK adequate time to get in
position
Once GK has got the quick footwork – move the servers back five yards and work on closing
down the angle around the semi-circle

Players rotate one position in sequence each time i.e. L to O – O to S – S to L etc.
Rotate GK as well
Allow S to shoot or lay off to keep GK guessing

Progression
Play the game like a world cup competition where all teams get to play each other once
Award two points for each victory
Team with the most points are the winners of Goalie Wars
KEY FACTORS/COACHING POINTS
This game should be fast and furious – each team trying to catch the other team out of
position or not ready
Teams decide whether to defend and attack side by side or one in front of the other
Although for fun, correct-handling, shot stopping, throwing, punching, drop kicking should be
adhered to throughout
