Job Purpose
To support the day-to-day operation of Library and Learning Resources through library stock
work and assisting library users in the Library.
Main activities and responsibilities
1. To shelve and tidy, including moving library stock
2. To discard library materials
3. To check the library shelves for requests, lost queried items etc.
4. To move boxes of library material between different areas of the Library
5. To clear library material from study tables
6. To assist library users in library use in line with training received and refer to other
sources of help where necessary.
7. To participate in the Library & Learning Resources student engagement strategy by
feeding back to library staff on the students’ perception of Library & Learning Resources
services.
8. To participate in building checks to support the monitoring of the Library and Learning
Resources environment.
9. To uphold and promote the University’s core values of Excellence, People Focused,
Partnership Working, Fairness and Integrity. These values define the principles of how
we work together with our staff, students and partners.
10.To contribute to the development of sound practices and procedures which promote
effective service functions.
11.To maintain the highest levels of security and confidentiality, and
ensure the integrity of all data, systems and networks which the role encounters

The post holder will be required to work with colleagues to ensure the efficient delivery of
Customer Services and to continuously improved and develop services.
You will demonstrate flexibility in order to work and contribute to different areas of Library
and Learning Resources when needed.
Initiative, problem solving and decision making
Initiative and decision making will be expected at the appropriate level, and the post holder
must refer onwards when they have reached the limits of their responsibility.

Undertaking academic study at Birmingham City University
Experience of working in a busy, customer focussed environment
Professional approach to the working environment
Good IT skills including use of Word, Excel and Access
Must be able to work as a member of a team and be a problem solver
There is a high necessity for accuracy and attention to detail
Must be able to handle multiple tasks concurrently in a calm and professional manner
and work to deadlines

Special requirements
Library and Learning Resources staff are expected to take an active approach to continuing
professional development. They are also required to maintain the highest levels of security
and confidentiality and ensure the integrity of all data, systems and networks used.
Members of staff may also be required to take part in Service or University activities which
take place during the evening and at the weekend, such as open days.
Staff are liable to serve at any of the University's places of employment as may be required.
