Modified Netball

Modified Netball - Netta
Guidelines
Seven (7) years, eight (8) years and nine (9) years
 Umpiring: coaches umpire the game
 Obstruction: Players may only defend "One on One" in Netta Any
defending player must stand 4f (1.2m) away from the player with the ball.
A defending player cannot defend a shot for goal in the goal circle.
 Contact: When a player bumps into another players and causes and
"interference" a penalty pass/or shot is awarded, but no player shall be
made to "stand beside".
 Stepping: Shuffling IS allowed but no large forward movement can be
made.
 Held Ball: A player may hold the ball for up to 6 seconds.
 Replay: A player may not bounce the ball intentionally more than twice –
commonsense should prevail – if a player hasn't got control it's NOT
replay.
 Throw-ins: Before a player takes a throw-in make sure they are behind
the line and all other players are on court, if they get it wrong, let them take
it again.
 Scoring a goal: A goal is scored if the ball passes through the ring on the
goal post.
 TCNAI encourages all modified coaches to teach all modified players how
to play the netball according to the normal rules.
Ten (10) years
 Umpiring: coaches umpire the game
 All ten (10) year teams should play and be umpired to Normal Netball
Rules (This includes all stepping and obstruction).
 For the period from the start of the season until the July school holidays all
ten (10) year teams will play on short goal posts. After the school holidays
all ten (10) year teams will play on normal goal posts for the rest of the
season.
 Scorecards are completed, however no
match points will be recorded
 No finals will be played
All modified players will receive an award for
participation.
HELPFUL HINTS FOR COACHES
 Introduce yourself to the other coach
 Toss for first centre pass or goal end
 Check players nails and for jewellery –







there are no earrings allowed – taped or otherwise
Terminology: Try to use the correct wording and then explain what you
mean by this – if you forget don't panic – just explain what the player has
done wrong, this will help the players get use to the rules
Loud Voice/Whistle: 14 excited players (particularly younger players) will
make for a lot of noise (not to mention the side-line) a good whistle will
help and a loud, calm and clear voice will get your message across.
Give general directions such as "spread out", "hold your feet still" and
"throw the ball".
Encourage the players – if they get it right say something like "that's it" or
"good try" if they don't quite get it.
Avoid giving direction to a specific player or one team, keep it fair and
even.
Be patient as it is a learning experience for all.
Have fun, young players will pick up on negative vibes.
IMPORTANT
Modified netball should be fun for everyone involved and no pressure should
be applied to players or umpires to progress prematurely beyond their
capabilities.
