Milestone Information Source: www.cdc.gov/act Challenge has a provider agreement with the NYS Dept of Health, Bureau of Early Intervention, to provide EI Services. Our program is approved, regulated and funded by NYS Dept of Health and the NYC Dept of Health & Mental Hygiene. The Early Intervention Program (EIP) is a public program for children under the age of 3 who are either suspected of having or at risk for developmental delays or disabilities. Eligibility for Early Intervention Program can be determined only by state-approved evaluators under contract. All needed EI services for eligible children are identified in collaboration with the parent and must be authorized by the municipality. 3 2 Months STEPS TO HELP YOUR CHILD: Pays attention to faces Can briefly calm himself (may bring hands to mouth & suck on hand) Coos, makes gurgling sounds • Can hold head up Makes smoother movements with arms & legs Turns head towards sounds Tries to look at parent Begins to* Smile at people *Push up when lying on tummy *Act bored (cry, fuss) if activity doesn’t change *Follow things w/ eyes & recognize people from afar 4 Months 6 Months 12 Months 18 Months Recognizes those familiar even from afar Smiles at & plays with people May cry when familiar people go away Cries differently if tired, hungry or hurt Copies sounds, smiles & frowns Tracks moving objects w/ eyes Babbles with expression, loves affection Explores toys by shaking or swatting Holds head steady, no help Reaches with one hand Presses legs to the floor Brings hands to mouth Watches faces closely Lifts up from stomach May roll from tummy Babbles with different vowels ( ah, eh, oh) Recognizes familiar people; responds to their emotions Begins to jabber with consonants ( “m”, “b”) Makes sounds showing joy & displeasure Looks at & reaches for things near or far Plays with others, especially family Passes object between hands Takes turn making sounds Legs bear weight in standing Rolls from back or belly Looks at self in mirror Recognizes strangers Rocks, crawls back May creep ahead Sits without aid Likes to bounce Cries to separate, fearful of strangers Shows preference for specific things & people Offers books for a story, identifies things Follows simple commands (“give me”., etc) Repeats sounds/actions, “peek-a-boo” Jargons, imitates, says “mama”, “ dada” Explores toy; shakes, bangs, throws Plays w/ container, throws in / out Grasps, releases, bangs together Shakes head “no”, waves “bye” Helps to dress and undress Knows item by function Pokes w/ index finger Walks along furniture Takes first steps Stands alone Loving & clingy to family, fears strangers Has temper tantrums at times Explores with parent near, points to interests Identifies objects, people, one body part Plays simple pretend, eg feeds doll Can sit down, clean up, stop on request Follows with & without gestures Says and shakes head “no” Says several words Drinks, eats independently Helps undress self Walks alone May climb steps Can pull toy May run CALL 311, THE NYC HOTLINE, ASK FOR EARLY INTERVENTION SPEAK TO AN EARLY INTERVENTION REPRESENTATIVE 9 Months Wary of strangers, clingy with those familiar Knows favorite toys, understands “no” Strings sounds: “mamama”, “bababa” Plays peek a boo, copies sounds and gestures Watches objects as they fall and move Likes to find things hidden from view Picks up items with index/thumb Transfers objects hand to hand Copies sounds & gestures Points to things with fingers Moves into sitting Sits without support Stands holding on Crawls around Pulls to stand PARENTS MAY CHOOSE AN EVALUATION AND SERVICE PROVISION AGENCY 24 Months Imitates adults & children Shows independence & defiance Excited when sees other children Knows family names & body parts Identifies & labels in home and books Uses 2-4 words, fills in rhymes Repeats words overheard Can do two things if told once Begins to make believe May show hand preference Stacks blocks, draws Climbs chair, stair Throws, kicks, runs Plays alongside peers, may share or interact To find out more about our services: T. 718.851.3300 W. challenge-ei.com All EIP services are provided at no cost to parents.
