ROAR February 2011 - Montreal West Curling Club

`
February 2011
February! Brrrr. Thank goodness we have such a busy month to keep us from
thinking about the weather.
So What Has Been Happening Around Here?
It was sad news to hear about the passing of Marilyn Harrold on January 13th. She put
up a very courageous battle. She will be greatly missed, not only by her Day Ladies’
curling, bridge and golfing friends, but by everyone in our club who knew Marilyn. Our
condolences go to her family and partner Kent at this time.
It was also unwelcome news to hear that long time member of the Men’s Day Curlers,
Dennis Worden, passed away on January 21 at the palliative care unit at the Montreal
General Hospital.
We also send a ‘get well soon’ to Al Kmec
A conscience is what hurts when all your other parts feel so good.
A Message from our President, Nacy Gallant
Kurling 4 Kids is fast approaching. The date is Saturday. March 26th. If anyone wants
to enter a team, please contact me. This event sells out quickly as many teams from last
year have signed already. Last year, all the clubs raised over $ 190,000 and this year we
will go over the one million dollar mark since this event started.
It's for a great cause. Last year, MWCC was #1 again raising in excess of $ 48,000.
We want to exceed the $ 50,000 mark this year. If anyone wants to make a donation, it
would be greatly appreciated. Tickets will soon be ready to buy or sell.
Congratulations to Kim Moskalewski Sr. and his committee. The Calcutta is full.
Great job! And, to the members who signed up for it, thanks for your support.
The volunteering that is taking place in the office is working very well. In my
conversations with some of the members they tell me they are really enjoying it.
Thanks very much to all of you.
.
A Request from the Board:
Some people are using the term “ice shed” when describing our facilities. It is a small
thing but it would help from a marketing point of view if everyone used the more positive
term “curling rink”.
While the Board hasn’t asked me to add this, I would also appreciate it if you would not
refer to the monthly ROAR as the monthly bore. It is bad for my ego and cuts down the
monthly sales.
Johnny is caught swearing by his teacher. “Johnny, you shouldn’t use that kind of
language. Where on earth did you hear that kind of language?”
“My Daddy said it.”
“Well that doesn’t matter. You don’t even know what it means.”
“I do. It means the car won’t start.”
Lyle Bradford Calcutta
Hone up your curling skills, look for some laughs and, of course, get your money ready.
The Lyle Bradford Calcutta is coming Thursday, February 17, Tuesday February 22,
Thursday, February 24 with the finals on Friday, February 25th.
Come and have fun. This year the theme is fun for all. The cost is $40 for 3 guaranteed
games a meal on Friday, money prizes, consolation prizes and door prizes. It’s open to
all Montreal West curlers age 15 and up, plus the Sunday leagues (SPA, Rolling Stones,
Canfir)
Even if you can't play, you can still get involved by owing a part of a team. The auction
of teams is scheduled for Wednesday, February 9th, at 6:30 p.m. “Fast” Ed Jones will
once again be there to auction the teams and to pick your pockets. To help you with
your team selection, “Dusty” Matchett will supply his Tip Sheet pointing out the many
glaring weaknesses of every team.
Added to this fun is the 40-40-20 draw every one of the 4 nights. How does this work?
It is similar to the half and half draws that you know so well except 40% of money
collected goes to your friendly editor. I wish!! No, here’s how it works.
Let’s say $200 is collected each of the 4 nights. The winner each night would receive
$80 (40%), $80 (40%) would be carried over to the last night for a really big draw, I’ll
explain that next, and $40 (20%) would go to the club. On the final night, the
25th of February, an extra draw would be made for the ($320) collected over the 4 nights.
(still with me people…4 x $80= $320.) All the tickets for the 4 nights would go into the
pot and my name…oops sorry…some lucky name would be drawn.
An all star lineup of skips have been chosen to play this year. Here they are:
Rob Williams, Scott Grafton, Jeff Cohen, Russ MacArther, Glenn Payne,
Kim Moskalewski Jr,, Kim Moskalewski Sr,, Dave Dubeau, Kevin Alladin,
Steve Holdaway, Zack Wise, Gerry Nolan, Mark Watson, Alex Hall,
Jim Cochrane, and Bob Carson.
Don’t you wish you could say this sometimes:
“ Stupidity is not a handicap. Park elsewhere!”
Entertainment
Here’s message from Sandra Arseneault:
Hello Everyone!
It’s MWCC’s very first country/hoedown night! I expect this fund raiser to be a great
time!
Are you ready for a hootin’, hollerin’ and dancin’ fun time at the Montreal West Curling
Club on Saturday March 12th, 2011??
Live musicians! Or should I say live music! Line dancing! Great food!
Keep your eyes open for details soon to be posted.
Your entertainment committee will again be selling advance tickets.
At the reading of the will….
………….therefore, I leave everything to my trusted lawyer.
Keri’s Korner
Our bartender, Keri, needs your help. Now, if you know what it good for you (in other
words: if you want a drink when you go to the bar.) it would be in your best interests to
give him the help he is asking for. It is this:
Some people use the chit system when ordering their drinks to build up a tab for the
night. No problem with that except when it comes time for payment. When you do
this, Keri would like you to ask for your chit, pay the bill, then YOU throw the chit in the
garbage. Occasionally these chits are getting mixed up with the other chits that are to go
on your account. Keri feels if you ask for the chit and then throw it into the garbage
after payment then this problem will go away.
He thanks you in advance for your help in this matter. And, no, the drinks are not on the
house when you comply.
Be careful what you say around children. They are like blotters. They soak it all in and
get it all backwards.

Congratulations to Alex Hall and his team of Adam Frelich, Nicolas Backman,
Dylan Applebaum and Rob Phillion for a perfect 8 -0 record. This team together with
the Glenn Payne and Bob Carson teams moved up to the A Section.
It was very close for which 3rd team moved up as 4 teams were tied with 16 points.
However, the Carson team got the nod. According to Rule 56B Paragraph 16, any team
that is shut out by the Dave Ryan team must be moved to a different section to avoid the
embarrassment of another shut out loss. It should be noted that the Ryan team made a
big leap from 9th position in the B section all the way up to 8th position.
Past Presidents Ladder Playoffs:
In the A section, the Jamie Sage team defeated Scott Grafton’s team. Congratulations to:
Martha Robinson
Nancy Sage
Elaine de Ryk
Jamie Sage
The playoff for the B Section has yet to be played.
Grafton-Hunt Ladder
The first half of the Grafton-Hunt competition is in full swing, and already there have
been a ton of great shots made. I am working on getting the website up to date, and I
apologize for not having it up to date! The boards in the club are always up to date!
Calcutta
You will have read about this earlier in this ROAR I just want to add that this is a major
club fundraiser so I hope everybody gets involved!! It is going to be a lot of fun.

Senior Women’s Provincials
The best of luck to team Debbie Ship in the upcoming provincials.
St. Lambert Ladies’ Bonspiel
Montreal West swept the podium at the St. Lambert Ladies’ Bonspiel on January 15th.
Teams skipped by Debbie Ship (winner), Elaine de Ryk (second place) and Bonnie Willis
(third place) played exceptionally well. Montreal West was extremely well represented
with 5 teams (some of which were incognito!)
Two Arkansas boys look at a Sears’ catalogue and admire the models.
One says to the other: 'Have you seen the beautiful girls in this catalogue?
The second replies. 'Yes, they are damn beautiful! And look at the price!'
The first says, with wide eyes,' Wow, they are not very expensive. At this price, I am
buying one.'
The second smiles and claps him on the back, ' Good idea, order one and if she is as
beautiful as in the catalogue, I will get one too.'
3 weeks later, he asks his chum 'Did you ever receive the girl you ordered from the Sears
catalogue?'
The second replies, ' No! But it shouldn't be long now.... I got her clothes yesterday!

She said, 'Come out from under the bed, you little chicken.'
Monday Evening Curling
Here’s news about the Monday Evening Curling League from Geneviève Lemieux:
The first half of the season of the newly constituted Monday Evening Curling League has
been completed. The standings are:
First place with 28 points:
Team #5, Les soeurs Pilon (Francine, Lyse and Lorraine) and Renate Huerster
Second place with 23 points:
Team #6 Ken Suitor/Anne-Marie Belanger, Mike Allen/Suzel Julien
Tied for Third place with 19 points:
Team #2 Robbie Sproule/Eva Lemanczyk, France Bourassa/Joan Hickey
Team #3 Zack Wise/ Mary Sutherland, Laura Kobayashi/Donald Buchan
Note: Teams #1 and #4 tied for last place with 15 points each.
However, the standings don't tell the full story. There were many very close games and
some really excellent curling, Congratulations to all the teams for making the
inauguration of the new mixed league a resounding success!
And now for the big news: as of January 24, our league now hosts a total of 8 teams as 9
new members are joining us for more curling fun. We wish a special welcome to the
Baldwin sisters, Jennifer and Kathryn, and Stephen Homer who just graduated from
Instructional; to our two regular spares from the first half of the season, Julia Sinclair and
Katherine Kruse; also to Sonia Drouin, Vincent Tam and Wendy Churchill, and not
forgetting our local barman Kari Parm!
Nouvelles de la ligue du lundi soir :
Maintenant que la première partie de la saison est complétée, voici les résultats au
classement :
En première place, avec 28 points :
L’équipe numéro 5 : Les soeurs Pilon (Francine, Lyse and Lorraine) et Renate Huerster
"Always look out for number one, and be careful not to step in number two."
Day Curling 40 +
Jack Herold Competition
Here are some comments from Bob LeMesurier:
This competition is well underway now. A big welcome to Denis Pelletier and
Greg Kehoe as new players into the league. It is also great to have Gary Barker back
with our group.
At the same time, we want to welcome new spares Gloria Caron, Judith Woodsworth,
and Maxime Betournay. Kudo's to Maureen Custy as the most popular spare for the
1st half and probably the 2nd half
Thanks to all our volunteer barmen. The half & half draw is again a big hit this 2nd half.
Please note we have had to install a time limit on games played. A few players nearly
froze to death or fell asleep on the ice because their games were so slow!! Come on
people! It shouldn’t be that hard to get our games finished in reasonable times.
A normal game should take 2 hours. We have extended that to give you a time limit of 2
hours and 15 minutes. The games start at 12:30 p.m. The bell will ring at 2:45 p.m.
When the bell rings, complete the end you are in and then stop.
Interclub
Now let us see how the interclub teams did in January. You will recall that Chip Mowat
was very depressed at the end of December because of the pathetic record of our guys.
On January 14 at our club against Baie D’Urfe we won 2 and lost 2. The winning teams
were:
Bert Mombo Chip Mowat Doug Allan
Tim Curran Bill Bedford Ed Crosbie
Bob McDevitt
Dave Dubeau
On January 20 at Glenmore we won only 1 of 4. The winning team was:
Tim Curran
Bill Bedford Mike Dowd
Dave Dubeau
On January 21 at our club against Pointe Claire we won 2 and lost 2. The winning teams
were:
Cyril Bernard Pierre Dufour Rick Hughes James Botsford
Tim Curran Bill Bedford Mike Dowd Dave Dubeau
Well, we won 5 of 12 games. That is a bit of improvement from the disastrous end of
2010 results. Chip had a smile on his face and bought drinks for the Dave Dubeau team
who accounted for 3 of the 5 wins. Or was he just ‘thinking’ about buying drinks for
the Dave Dubeau team? I’ll have to check with Dave.
An apology is often the best way to have the last word.
Reg Wells District Bonspiel
Here’s a report from James Botsford, Day Curling 40+ Co-ordinator:
The Day Curling 40+ held this bonspiel on Wednesday, January 19th. 24 Teams from
various clubs and organizations in Quebec and Ontario participated, including 7 in-house
Montreal West teams.
The winners were:
Draw 1:
Draw 2:
Pointe Claire skipped by Ron O'Shaughnessy
St. Lambert skipped by Neil Alexander
Draw 3:
N.D.G. Legion skipped by Dave Dubeau (Chip Mowat claims
it was Dave’s interclub training that made the difference.)
Congratulations to the winners.
Many people have to pitch in to make a bonspiel successful. I would like to send my
thanks to:
Bob LeMesurier - for his computer expertise (labels, board etc.)
Wolf and Paula - for the excellent meal
Anne Mitchell
- for her smiling face behind the bar
Jacques Lacroix - for his super job as MC of the event
Mike Homonko - for looking after all the finances
Gord Moore and - for taking care of the scoring for all 3 draws
Moe Quenneville
Volunteers
- for the many ways they were so helpful
Rick Hughes, Joe Balogh, Al Gagnon, Dodd Gray,
Paul Reaper, Cyril Bernard, Chester Sawczyszyn,
Ron Pilkington, Kari Parm and any that I may have
missed.
I want to thank Ray Dubrule who had his baptism of fire handling the main duties for
this, his first district bonspiel. Ray did an excellent job and, as a reward, will now be
handling all future district bonspiels with help from his friends, of course.
Thank you Ray - great job!
The next, and last, district bonspiel for this season will be held on Wednesday,
March 23rd. All senior Montreal West in house or rentals are invited to participate in
this bonspiel's 3rd draw.
The same man robbed a bank 4 times. The police interviewed the bank manager –
Police: Can you give us a description of the thief?
Bank Manager: Well, I’m not good at descriptions but, if it is any help, each time he
comes in he is dressed better.
Junior Curling
Jeux de Quebec
MWCC had 3 teams participate in the Lac St Louis JDQ playdowns.
The girls team of Dominique Jean, Melissa Dunn, August Darey, Sam Gentile, Allison
Moskalewski and coach Gloria Toteda finished in 2nd place winning the silver medal.
We had 2 boys teams. Christopher Byrne, Tyler Watson, Tyler Seguin, Tyler Rowley
and coach Trish Dempsey enjoyed this new experience having just moved up from little
rocks. The second team Brian Dunn, Bryce Drewery-Schoeler, Michael Fagen,
Raymond Casgrain, Danny Bell and coach Kim Moskalewski were in an exciting final
finishing with a silver medal.
Congradulation to all….thank you for representing the club so proudly.
Myke Wilder Junior League
League games have been exciting this year with all gaining valuable experience. We
have 3 more sessions planned and our finals celebration is in early April.
Outside Bonspiels
Montreal West was well represented at the 2011 Junior Provincial Championship in

“Did you kill this beast?” asks the explorer.
‘Yes,” replies the pygmy.
“What did you use?” asks the explorer.

“That must have been an enormous club,” says the explorer.
“Oh, it is,” replied the pygmy. “There are about 400 of us.”

Dear editor:
Just before a recent Day Curling 40+ Interclub competition, much to his chagrin, cook
Wolf Linsenmeyer discovered someone had stolen some of the chickens to be ‘used’ that
day.
This letter is to tell everyone to stop looking for a thief. We were not stolen.
escaped.
We
We waited until everyone was busy watching the curling. We knew it was our chance to
escape. You could say it is a play on words but we were not chicken to attempt this
escape. We knew, as chickens, we desperately had to find a way out and we did. I
won’t tell you how we escaped but you could say we just ‘flew the coop’.
So stop looking for us. Right now we are lounging in our cabana on a Caribbean island
that will go unnamed watching a movie on TV….a Chick flic of course.
Yours no more,

P.S. We tried to get Naggy Maggy the chicken to join us but she said she would miss

A man and his wife, moved back home to Newfoundland, from Ontario. The wife had a
wooden leg and to insure it in Ontario was costing them $2000 a year!
When they arrived in Newfoundland, they went to an insurance agency, to see how much
it would cost to insure. The agent looked it up on the computer and said to the couple,
'$39.00.'
The husband was shocked and asked why it was so cheap here in Newfoundland to insure
because it had cost him $2000 in Ontario!
The agent turned his computer screen to the couple and said, 'Well, here it is on the
screen. It says: “Any wooden structure, with a sprinkler system over it, is $39.00.”
