PharmaTopia – The world in 30 years’ time Conference marking the 30th anniversary of the BUKO Pharma-Kampagne 16th – 17th September, 2011, Bielefeld PharmaTopia “And where would we be if everybody said where would we be, and nobody went to find out where we would be if we went.” Kurt Marti Where are we today? For 30 years the BUKO Pharma-Kampagne has been critically analyzing the dark sides of the pharmaceutical market in the south and the north. On our way, many people have supported us and inspired with their ideas and utopias for a globally fair supply of drugs. Where to go next? What are our visions of the pharmaceutical research of the future? And what is the pharmaceutical market of the future going to be like? Which medicines do we need and which information is necessary to enable patients and doctors to make rational decisions? We wish to ask uncomfortable questions even if do not have answers ready and allow space for new lines of thought. How do we get there? Together with experts from the north and the south, from the medical field, from specialist organizations and from politics, we will fathom alternatives and seek ways how a better provision of medicines for all can be implemented. Join us on our journey to PharmaTopia and let us see where our utopias will lead us! Our adventurous excursion will be accompanied by musical, humorous and culinary intermezzi. And last but not least, we wish to celebrate with you! Which kind of research has a future? (English) How could a globally fair model of research look like? Who will define the priorities for research? What will be the roles of public and private research? Can research networks be a model for the future? Do we need more medical drugs or improved health care systems or both? These are key questions for the workshop. With: Prof. Andy Gray - University of Durban, South Africa, Prof. Adriane Fugh-Berman Georgetown University, USA, Prof. Gerd Glaeske - ZES Center for social politics, Bremen University, Uwe Kekeritz - MP Moderator: Cora Koch – UAEM, Universities allied for essential medicines, Münster University Rapporteur: Dr. Christian Wagner-Ahlfs - BUKO Pharma-Kampagne 2. Essential medicines for all (English) Approximately 350 active substances are sufficient for treating 95% of all diseases which are treatable with drugs. But even these essential medicines are not accessible in many countries, in particular those drugs which are protected by patents and thus overpriced. Although patients have access to essential medicines in the affluent north, increasingly expensive medicines endanger the financial basis of the statutory health insurance. How could a future model of a globally fair supply of drugs look like? These topics will be discussed in the workshop. With: Roopa Devadasan - IPH, Dr. Rogério Hoefler - Conselho Federal de Farmácia, Brazil, Jana Böhme – VDPP - Ass. Of democrativ pharmacists, Tido von Schön-Angerer - Médecines sans frontiers), Wolfgang Kaesbach - GKV Spitzenverband National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds, Niema Movassat – MP Moderator: Dr. Christiane Fischer - BUKO Pharma-Kampagne Rapporteur: Teresa Alves - Health Action International Europe, Amsterdam 3. Well informed or manipulated? Good information is necessary for sound decisions on health interventions. This is true for doctors and patients alike. In this workshop we will work on a scenario which protects both from manipulation and encourages rational therapeutic decisions. In this context we deal with the following key questions: What are the requirements for sound health information? Who is fit to deliver the necessary data? Which political changes are necessary on the national and European level? With: Erika Feyerabend – BIOSKOP, Forum for observing life sciences and their technologies, Wolfgang Becker-Brüser - arznei-telegramm, independent German drug bulletin, Prof.Wolf-Dieter Ludwig – AkdÄ, Drug Commission of the German Medical Association, Astrid Berner-Rodereda - Brot für die Welt, Bread for the World, Andreas Wulf - medico international, Arif Ünal - Member of the NRW-parliament Moderator: Gregor Bornes (Spokesman Federal Community for Patients Advice and Empowerment, Cologne) Rapporteur: Hedwig Diekwisch / Claudia Jenkes - BUKO Pharma-Kampagne 4. Which kind of clinical trials are necessary for the people? Our vision of the future is a pharmaceutical market which offers useful and safe drugs. To achieve this, clinical trials are indispensible. However, some manufacturers of pharmaceuticals tend to hide disadvantageous results of trials. And often, trials which could answer important questions are not done. So which kind of comparisons would be necessary to allow a reliable judgment on the benefits of a new drug for patients? And how can changes and more transparency be enforced? This workshop is intended to seek for answers to all these questions.
