In your particular organisation this is a role that comes with a pay rise. When new employees begin work, the first thing they must show is their awareness of hazards and how to stay safe. You have been asked to test all new employees and give guidance where needed during their ‘induction week’. Scenario 2 (Task 2) One of the new employees has made a complaint that you do not know how to fulfil your role as health and safety officer. She believes she can do a better job than you. Your employer has called you into his office to have a quiet word. Task 1 Your first job as health and safety officer is to look over the test paperwork and note down the expected answers. On Worksheet 1 “Hazard Awareness Test” you must record a master copy of all answers you would expect employees to give. This provides evidence for P1, P4 & M3 Task 2 Your employer explains that the role of health and safety officer is one he takes very seriously. He asks you to prove to him that you are capable of doing the job correctly by showing you understand how and why risk assessments are done. Complete Worksheet 2 “Risk Assessment” to prove that your understanding. This provides evidence for P5, P6 & M2 Worksheet 1 “Hazard Awareness Test” 1) Using notes, describe the methods you could use to identify hazards in a workshop such as the one shown below 2) Describe how hazards which become risks can be controlled. Give two examples. For a merit, your answer will need to be well structured and refer to accident prevention. Worksheet 2 “Risk Assessment” Risk assessments are not supposed to be unnecessarily time consuming. They are designed to help employers provide a safe place to work. The template used on this worksheet was copied directly from the HSE website (http://www.hse.gov.uk/). 1) Choose a work area & complete a risk assessment on that area using the template below. A line has been filled in by the HSE as an example: What are the hazards? Who might be harmed and how? What are you already doing? Do you need to do anything else to manage this risk? Action by whom? Slips and trips Staff and visitors may be injured if they trip over objects or slip on spillages We carry out general good housekeeping. All areas are well lit including stairs. There are no trailing leads or cables. Staff keep work areas clear, eg no boxes left in walkways, deliveries stored immediately, offices cleaned each evening Better housekeeping is needed in staff kitchen, eg on spills All staff, supervisor to 01/10/10 monitor Action by when? Done 01/10/10 Worksheet 2 continued... 2) Explain why your current and suggested control measures are suitable (these are the parts you entered under “What are you already doing?” and “Do you need to do anything else to manage this risk?”) 3) For each of the column headings in the risk assessment, explain why it is important to carry out that section in a suitable manner. To help communicate your thoughts, you may include examples of what could happen if that part was incorrectly filled out: Heading Why is it important to carry out this section in a suitable manner? i) What are the hazards? ii) Who might be harmed and how? iii) What are you already doing? iv) Do you need to do anything else to manage this risk? v) Action by whom? vi) Action by when? vii) Done
