Offensive Philosophy
Offensive Emphasis:
1. Strong Inside Running Game
2. Few Plays/Variety of Formations
3. Attack Entire Field
“…take what the defense gives us.”
The Spread Offense:
Basic Concepts
What is a “spread” offense?
• Formation with 3-4 players “spread out”
away from the tackle box area
• QB either under center, or in the shotgun
Why the Spread?
• Puts ball in hands of athletes in space
• Minimal looks for OL and QB
• Creates simpler looks in running game
• Recruiting: easier to get smaller, athletic
kids as opposed to big, strong kids
• Decision-making: in hands of players
• Fatigues defense
• FUN!!!
Explosive Opportunities in Running Game
Necessary Components
• Attitude: Must be aggressive and physical
• Must force defense to “cover-down”
• Force defense to defend entire field
• Multiplicity. Defense must see many looks
• Tempo. We must control it
• Must have plan to defeat the blitz

• Defense leaving receiver uncovered.
Must either throw “uncovered” or the
Bubble Screen, otherwise they can
overload us with 7 in the box.

• All receivers “covered down”, and FS
in deep middle. 6 in the box means
we can run or throw.

• All receivers “covered down”, and 2
safeties playing deep halves. Only 5 in
the box, meaning we should run the ball.

• No FS in deep middle, indicating blitz.
We only have 6 to block 7, meaning QB
must check the protection or check to a
blitz-beater and throw quick.
C
Shotgun Offense
• Same runs and passes as last year.
• Allows us more “option” opportunities
with athletic QB

No-Huddle Offense
• Allows us to dictate tempo
– Storm, Thunder, Lightning
• Forces “vanilla” defense
• Defense reacting to us, rather than
vice-versa
• Fatigues defense, especially those
with two-way players
• Eliminates need to condition at
practice
10 min. of conditioning x 4 days (M, T, W, TH)
= 40 minutes of conditioning per week
OR
5 plays per minute x 40 minutes =
200 reps per week
200 reps per week x 10 weeks =
2000 additional reps per season!!

“Keep It Likeable and Learnable”
No-Huddle Tempos
"Storm" Slowest pace. Uses entire play clock. Formation signaled in and offense
sets. Play then signaled in after pressbox coach sees defensive reaction to
formation. Also can use with lead to control the clock.
"Thunder" Regular pace. Uses 15-20 seconds per play. Formation and play signaled
in together.
"Lightning" Fast pace. Players immediately set in "Doubles" after whistle and receive
play call.
"Abort" Cancels No-Huddle, and team will huddle.
