3. Presentations
Local funding updates and workforce development (ND)

AM to
LBS are running 3 free funding workshops for clubs and organisations to attend:

- Grant writing
The first workshop has already taken place but there are places available on the
remaining two. If you are unable to attend ND can provide copies of the
presentations.

Club audit
- ND will be able to design a bespoke package for clubs and organisations that
have completed the club audit.




Workforce development
- Free places are available for Southwark residents over 19 on a range of minutes
courses including SCUK modules, gym instructor and sport specific
qualifications.
LBS can fund 1 main course (e.g. gym instructor) or 3 smaller
ones per person.
- If there is a particular course that anyone would like to do please let ND know
and LBS can fund up to £200.
Funding opportunities
- FreeSport Grant- closing date Monday 27th October.
- Southwark Community Capacity Fund- charity or service provider in
Southwark .
- Bermondsey Square- features strands of health and happiness.
- Sportivate Disability specific round planned for January.
Sport England Segmentation
- SE segmentation can assist with evidencing need on grant application.
- There are 19 segments in total and includes mapping exercise to identify
what the most prevalent profiles are in geographical areas.
- Most prevalent profile in Southwark is Kevs (middle aged men looking to play
team sports).
- Information included in SE segmentation is from APS so focused on 16+
- SE have published a Youth Insight document for U16s to assist with how to
develop messages and marketing for this age group.
- SE now categorises young people into three groups: positive, functional and

AA highlighted benefits of attending funding workshops and the importance of SE minutes
market segmentation in grant writing.
ND noted that if applying for SE funds use SE, DCMS and Household Survey. LBS
Community Sport Team and Community Action Southwark can read through grant
applications to provide feedback and assistance.
National and London wide funding Updates (XB)

Document was circulated to assist with different types of funding

3 broad areas:
- Sports for sport’s sake
Sport England Small Grants is underutilised, Inspired Facilities, Inclusive
Fund (2015 TBC) and trust funders.
- Diversionary activity
Focus on social outcomes
- Physical activity and health.
Focus on wider health outcomes with Health and Wellbeing Board or CCG.
Get Healthy, Get Active launched this week. There are lost of trust funders
in this area.
 ND, XB and TJ open to supporting funding application from partners in
Southwark.
4. Individual Member Updates
Updates from members present - An opportunity for colleagues to provide updates

Women only sessions running in St Philip's Vicarage.
Looking to expand into education.
Sessions are still running at Darwin Court funded through LBS Adult
Learning.
10-12 weeks of funding available for boxing programme in schools, please
pass onto anyone who may be interested. Fight for fit challenge is made up
of 10 stations and top 3 from each school win a prize and overall school wins
a prize.
Funding also available for non contact boxing sessions so please contact
RD.
Can provide Box Course (non contact) for anyone interested and currently
looking for a venue.
SLT

Lambeth and Southwark dance network launched to look at how to develop
work and how to connect with communities. Meeting will be held on 11/11 to
discuss needs of the dance community and troubleshoot. 4 meetings a year
will be held and aim to invite different service areas and so please contact
SLT if you would like to attend.


Salmon has been involved in football league with 6 other youth clubs.
Fixtures have been flexible to suit staff and players.
Currently 10-14 year olds but if goes well will expand to 14+.
Salmon and Hollington are playing each other in girls football.
Southwark Storm will be providing basketball session on Monday night 8- SV &JA to
discuss
10pm for 14 years plus. Potential link to play against DTC
Increasing usage of hoists and swings for young disabled people and running
sessions with Spa School.
AA noted importance of linking with other people to increase chances of being
successful with funding bids.


- as part of leadership programme young people will be signposted to clubs
and organisations to undertake volunteering hours. If you are able to provide
leadership opportunity please contact O &L.
- Careers day will be held at LSBU to show potential careers in sport. It will
include a 40 minute career workshop and speakers are invited to attend.

DTC has undergone a recent refurbishment and now offering 6 evenings and
weekend activities in a variety of sports.
American football team is through to quarter finals.
Running Doorstep Sports Clubs and Satellite Club programme.
Crossfit sessions have now started.
Users of the centre have sessions cards to complete and once they have
attended 5 activities/session their name is placed on the achievement board.

Southwark student volunteering fair in November- sports organisations are
invited.
Volunteering forum 11/11.
Do-It website is re-launching to enable organisations to list own adverts.
Training calendar for 2015 will be released shortly.

Movement factory are running a female residential in May for 40 young
people.
Short tennis sessions are running at Salmon and Bradfield Youth Centre.

Wheels for Wellbeing has Sportivate funding to deliver sessions for 11-25
year olds for 8-12 weeks at Herne Hill Velodrome. If any groups would like to
take up this offer please contact VO.
Over 200 bikes are available to suit any disability.
Bikeability programme during summer enabled 23 young people to gain
Level 1.
Battersea Dog Home programme changed from original plan and they went
to centre rather than Camberwell visiting them.
Film project did not run as another department running similar programme.
Youth Service Unit Plans are being written with looking at new ways to tackle
obesity and promote healthy eating including educating young people that
they can get fit and healthy through physical activity rather than sport.

Women and girls football forum is being held on 13/11. Anyone is welcome.
Goals for girls festival is being held in Catford on 15/11 for U11 and U13s.

Let Me Play is fulltime football and education programme for 16-25 NEATS.
Two programmes a year are run and participants work towards NVQ and
BTEC.

Several groups have already arranged usage at the centre including Millwall.
Funding has been gained to run an autistic club.

Community Sport Activation Fund being developed with Creation Trust
around Burgess Park and Aylesbury Estate to get more residents to use the
park. If partners would like to be involved in the bid please contact XB.

Three disability satellite clubs awarded funding in Southwark.
Wheelchair Basketball session at Salmon Centre has partnered with two
other borough sessions to put an U15s wheelchair basketball team together.
Sportability Grant will run again this again. The grant is open to clubs and
organisation to run 8-10 weeks of programme to make their club more
inclusive. Details to be circulated once available.

Council are working with organisations called Sports Extra who have a laser
beam activity which can be hired.

15 Satellite club in 9 secondary schools in Southwark.
Year 3 expressions of interest will be welcome in January.
Application submitted to Be Active.
Currently running Elephant in the room campaign focussing on mental
health. 50 small elephants have been purchased and have been placed in
various places around the facility to encourage people to discuss the
elephant in the room (mental health).
Adapted idea from Harvard University called Kings Sweeps Up which is a
website for people to put of videos to discuss mental health experiences.

In previous role they had a week of sport linked with NGBs and colleges.
Fay Blake can upload to Youth Services Facebook and Twitter pages.
JA noted importance of social networks and using images on posts.
AA noted first 3 words of any tweet or Facebook post are most important.
5. Southwark Physical Activity and Sport Strategy 2014-2017 - Update on Q2
actions (AM)
 CYYP group was developed from Physical Activity and Sport Strategy.
 Group work towards 5-6 action points.
 Family Participation action is ongoing.
 Increase in number of school links.
 Healthy Schools/ MEND scheme.
 Developing physical activity for early years has been passed over to tackling
inactivity group.
6. London Sport Updates (PM)
 Restructure to London Sport and new CEO in place.
 Coach Web is website with 15,000 coaches listed and is free to search on.
 Sportivate has been extended to 2017 and is aimed at 11-25 year olds.
 London Sport will be undertaking a website and branding change.
 Contact PM if want more information on Sport England Segmentation.
7. Local Project Updates
Get Active Summer campaign results (SJ)
 Campaign aimed to drive residents to website through Facebook campaign.
 Successful campaign with females more active.
 New Year, New You campaign will be launched again in January.
 Target for 14/15 is 20500 unique searches for Southwark on Get Active
London.
 Looking to run marketing workshop for clubs and organisations in the new
year.

AA noted importance of Google Analytics and that the group should think
about ways to promote the work of the group/sessions etc.. through social
media.
London Youth Games (AM)
 LYG campaign launched.
 Southwark finished 11th in 2014 and 9th in 2013 so aiming for top 10 finish in
2015.
 In 2014 won male athletics, BMX and was 2nd in female basketball with over
1400 young people engaged.
 2015 BMX competition will be held at Burgess Park.
Additional Sports Team updates
 AM
- Nike and US girls tennis session started at London Southbank Engineering
Academy called Racquets and run by one of youth panel.
- E-newsletter will be launching later in the year with 5 sections- funding,
volunteering, Get Active, events and inclusive and active.
- Fencing community club is being setup at Compass school.
- Planning permission had been granted and contractors selected for
reinstatement of Southwark Athletics Centre which is due to open in
June/July 2015.
