September 2007 – April 2008: Research consultant, Argentina • Providing support for the programme ‘Sustainable Biopec’, this aimed to work with a broad platform to launch pilots in the field of sustainably produced biomass in developing countries. • Research project to assess the feasibility and impacts of sustainability criteria on costs and potential of certified bioenergy production from Soybeans and Miscanthus in a selected region in Argentina. Final products are two scientific articles. March 2007 – November 2007: Interim Executive Secretary, RTRS - Argentina • Responsible for the day-to-day management of the secretariat of the Roundtable on Responsible Soy Association (RTRS) and, in an interim role, a smooth transition to the final Secretary • Activities included finances, communication and other project related activities as organizing the General Assembly in Sao Paolo in May 2007 and the Board meeting in Buenos Aires in November 2007. • In this period the RTRS grew from 12 to around 60 members in November 2007. September – November 2006: Researcher, Utrecht University, the Netherlands • A 3 months project, implemented in the framework of IEA Task 40, to make a synthesis of initiatives in the field of international biomass certification from the view of different stakeholder groups (NGOs, companies, government, international bodies). • As second objective, overlap and risks in activities will be identified resulting in some final recommendations and conclusions. Resulted in scientific article. December 2004 – May 2006: Programme Assistant, Tropenbos International Vietnam (TBI-VN) • Tropenbos International is an international Non Governmental Organization with its head office based in the Netherlands. Its objective is to improve forest management through better knowledge and enhanced capacity of forestry research in Vietnam. • Assisting the Program Team Leader (PTL) in management, monitoring and coordination of the research projects and training activities. Playing a role in finalization of 1st phase TBI-VN (2001-2005) • Activities included contributing to the development of the Country Strategy Paper for the 2nd phase of the programme and communication activities through networking, newsletters and attendance of meetings. Assisting PTL in Vietnam in acquisition and development of project proposals. Feb 2003 – November 2004: Researcher on EU-projects, University Utrecht, the Netherlands • The European Union funded project VIELWS investigated the possibility to trade biomass from Eastern to Western Europe within the perspective of the set target of the European Commission to increase largely the use of bio-fuels in Europe. • Development of a land-use change model to assess the biomass potential in Eastern European countries • The European Union funded project BIOMITRE (implemented within framework of International Energy Agency IEA Task 40) had as objective to develop a carbon accounting software tool to compare the Green House Gas benefits and costs of biomass projects and (as reference) fossil fuel based projects. March 2002 – Feb 2003: Project Officer Central and Eastern Europe, VNG International, The Hague • VNG International is the international department on the Association of Dutch Municipalities, which plays an advisory and representative role of the municipalities in the Netherlands on various issues including development work and capacity building in local governance • Managing projects related to local governance and decentralization as a European Union funded project for setting up a centre for homeless people in Kiev, Ukraine. Main tasks: management, communication between partners. • Intermediary between municipalities and international department of Association of Dutch municipalities Nov 2001 – March 2002: Short term assignment for Dutch Habitat Platform, The Hague, Netherlands Development of a publication on urban green benefits in developing countries, which was implemented mainly through a literature study and interviews Publication provides a theoretical overview of functions and values of urban green and economic valuation methods followed by some recommendations how to value urban green in the specific context of urban areas in developing countries. The publication also contains some case studies to show promising urban green projects. March – June 2001: Short term assignment Faculty of Agriculture & Soil Science, Australia • Analysis about the possibilities to modify the hydrological simulation model BASINS, developed in the USA, to Australian circumstances with the objective to use the model to map salinity on a regional and local level in New South Wales. The model is based on a Geographical Information System (GIS).
