New England Science & Sailing Foundation (NESS) announces a new Assistant Sailing Director/Race
Coach position to support our year round programs in Stonington and New London, CT. This fulltime, year-round position reports directly to the NESS Sailing Program Director. The Assistant Sailing
Director/Race Coach must enjoy working with and teaching students, both youth and adults, of all
abilities, both on and off the water. The candidate should have a strong racing background with
the experience, capabilities, and passion for developing a strong junior racing program. As a
devoted, energetic professional, the Assistant Sailing Director/Race Coach will have an impactful
role on an award-winning team in a rapidly growing organization.
Minimum Requirements (certain certifications can be obtained through NESS):










4-year college degree preferred
US Sailing Level 2/Level 3 preferred
2 years of sailing program management including head instructor duties
Minimum of 3 years of race coaching experience
Minimum of 3 years of collegiate or Olympic development sailing
Strong program and staff management skills
ARC Waterfront Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid (can
be obtained through NESS)
USCG OUPV 6-pack License or greater (can be obtained through NESS)
Minimum age: 20
Criminal history check
Duties and Responsibilities:
•
Administrative: This position will work closely with the Sailing Program Director on day-to-day
operations. NESS offers year-round programming which includes summer programs, high
school sailing, after school programs, weekend programs, adult programs, and STEM based
school day experiences. The Assistant Sailing Director/Race Coach must be willing to:
o assist the Sailing Program Director as required with hiring, scheduling, and supervising
sailing instructors
o work with parents, other NESS staff, and directors of other sailing programs
o assist with general administrative responsibilities

Coaching: This position is for a 420 race coach that will be based out of NESS. As the Head
Race Coach, the Assistant Sailing Director/Race Coach is responsible for all logistics
surrounding coaching young students in the 420 class. These responsibilities include but are
not limited to the following:
o setting up a curriculum that best suits a proper progression throughout the summer
weeks
o arranging all aspects of traveling to away events including organizing boats for towing
o reaching out to parents and volunteers to assist with regatta days
o working closely with other coaching staff assigned to the program
o regatta management
o offseason development of local students by offering opportunities to sail and race in
the offseason

Teaching: The Assistant Sailing Director/Race Coach will teach sailing as part of NESS’s
general course offerings throughout the year. Offerings include courses in Optimist prams,

Opti trainer prams, Hartley 12 dinghies, O’pen Bic dinghies, Sonar keelboats, a J/105 keelboat
as well as 420s.

Operations: NESS’s large fleet of power and sail boats needs to be maintained, so working
closely with the Operations Director on facilities and boat maintenance projects is a must. In
addition to a background that includes minor fiberglass and gelcoat repair, the Assistant
Sailing Director/Race Coach needs to have a basic working knowledge of power tools. Any
outboard systems skills would be a great bonus.

Overall Safety: NESS regards safety as a high priority when it comes to getting students out on
the water so the Assistant Sailing Director/Race Coach must help oversee and implement the
NESS safety plan at all times.

Program Development: At NESS we are always looking for the next great innovative way to
get students learning while out on the water. Program development is always an ongoing
process and we would look to improve and expand upon current programs.
