Soccer even in two MAC games
Friday night the Rockets opened their Mid-American Conference
schedule with a win against Marshall at Anthony Wayne High
School.
UT got on the board first with an unassisted goal by Diana
Ginley just more than seven minutes into the game.
The Rockets went into the half with a 1-0 lead and never
showed any signs of letting the lead go.
“Marshall is a good team,” coach Brad Evans said. “Chris
[Kane] has done a good job with their young players. There
were times when they controlled the pace of the game, but I
think our girls responded well.”
UT found itself down in Marshall’s side of the field five
times in the first five minutes of the second half and finally
scored 15 minutes into the half. Ginley dribbled between two
defenders and scored again to put the Rockets up 2-0.
“Diana has finally been rewarded,” said Evans. “She’s been
playing well and I’m happy that she could finish out two-fortwo.”
With 15 minutes left in the game, the Rockets scored again.
This time it was Sarah Schulte with the goal and Sarah Crane
with the assist.
Marshall scored on Jennifer Short’s goal with just under 11
minutes to go in the game to make the final score 3-1.
The Rockets’ luck, however, didn’t carry over to Sunday, when
UT fell 1-0 to visiting Ohio University.
OU played a physical style game that just seemed to put the
Rockets off their game. There were two yellow cards, one for
each team.
The game went into halftime scoreless and seemed to be heading
into a scoreless tie for the finish, until the Bobcats got on
the board with less than 23 minutes left in the game.
The Rockets picked up their intensity after the goal and came
close to tying the game up a couple of times.
With eight-and-a-half minutes to go in the game, Robin
Davidson hit the top of the goal post, a near miss that would
have tied the game.
Overall, UT goalkeeper Jen Whipple had a good weekend, giving
up two goals in the two games. With less than six minutes to
go in Sunday’s game, Whipple made a great one-handed save to
keep the Bobcats’ score at one.
By splitting the games over the weekend, the Rockets record
moves to 4-2-1, including 1-1 in the MAC.
UT will continue its MAC schedule Friday against Eastern
Michigan in Ypsilanti, Mich.
