PLAYERS BACKING UP Policy

PLAYERS BACKING UP/PLAYING UP
Camden junior rugby league football club has a selection, backing up and playing up policy that
applies to all age groups at this club.
All players, parents and officials are expected to follow this policy.
This policy was first implemented in 2012 and is reviewed annually prior to the commencement of
each season.
This procedure has been developed to show transparency to all involved and to give all players equal
opportunity.
MINI U6 – U9
Teams will be mixed each year to include new players to the club and experienced players in the club
to ensure that team abilities are competitive. The mini competition is a non-competitive draw and as
such all players should be given the same opportunities (ie. play up in age group when required).
Parent coaches can expect that their child will be in their team however the Committee will allocate
the remainder of the team. Some U9 players may be selected to play in the U10 competition to
help further develop their skills in preparation for Mod Football.
This will be based on registration numbers and the individual child’s ability (according to Coaching
Coordinators).
If a player is selected to play in the U10 competition, parents will be consulted in order to seek
permission for this child to play up in a higher age group and if approved the player will be graded as
an U10 player for the upcoming season. Team selections will be notified as soon as possible after
registrations have been finalised. Any new registrations after team appointments will be distributed
evenly among the teams alternately as they register. Any team that requires a player to back up/play
up, the team Coach or Team Manager must consult with the relevant Team Manager or Coach that
they require players from, by halftime of the game they are requiring the players from eg: U10 for
U11.
The request can only be made for players who parents have nominated that they are able to play up
a year and taking into account that a player can only back up a maximum two years above their age
(ie. Player turning 5y/o cannot play U8) and the player must demonstrate the ability to play up.
Coaches requesting players, cannot request specific players.
Opportunities to back up/play up should be shared equally amongst the player and not given to the
same players if others are available and suitable.
- U6 then the other U6 teams (only if numbers are short and the opposition has no objection)
- U7 then U6 should be asked (U7 only if U6 players are not available and the opposition has no
objection)
- U8 then U7 should be asked then U6 (U8 only if the U7 and U6 players are not available and the
opposition has no objection)

- U9 then U8 should be asked then U7 (U9 only if the U8 and U7 players are not available and the
opposition has no objection)
MOD U10 – U12
This is a competitive draw and as such the best team should be selected. All players will have the
opportunity to trial for the age group and will not be able to nominate a specific grade (ie. A B C).
The appointed A’s coach within each age group will select their draft team based on ability and
attitude demonstrated at training and trial games one and two (all age group coaches may also
consult with each other if appointed). The Coach Coordinator will then review based on their view
from trial game and discuss with team selection with the relevant coach. (If a dispute arises both will
present their views to the Committee for a decision.) Any new registration after the team
announcements have been made, will be allocated in the first instance to a lower division team. If it
is then deemed that movement should occur due to uneven numbers in teams or the new player’s
ability then this will be done in consultation with the A, B and C coach. (If a dispute arises the Coach
Coordinators will review and provide the Committee with a recommendation taking into account
both Coaches views.)
Any team that requires a player to back up/play up, the team Coach or Team Manager must consult

officials from the team requiring player approach parents or players of another team directly.

players in the first instance. If players are not available then the next division should be asked etc.
