Attacking Lines – Acting Half

ADVANCED SKILLS
Attacking Lines – Acting Half
When & Why:
Cue Words:
When attacking the score line or in fact when
attacking in general the aim should always be to
attack the space between two defenders.
DIRECT, SPACE, SAVER, SCANNING (VISION).
Therefore the lines or angles that attacking players
run, both with the ball, and in support, are
especially important.
Common Errors:
Direct attacking lines from the acting half, force the
defender to make a decision whether to defend the
ball carrier or the support player.



Objectives:

1. Teach the acting half runner to attack the
space created by the retreating defender
to force a decision from the defensive line.
2. Convert the easy scoring opportunity
created by the half in the score zone.
3. Creation of advanced phase play
opportunities.


Acting half doesn’t run direct at space, but
rather runs at an angle at the defender.
Not identifying the attacking space.
Not scanning correctly leading to poor
decision.
Support players do not attack the correct
space to receive the ball.
Wingers and support players enter score
zone too deep.
Decision making errors from half such as
passing ball to early, too high, too late.
Half incorrectly scans.
Key Coaching Points:
1. Half needs to run straight to avoid being
touched by the defensive saver. This will
also force a shut down in defence opening
up the wing hole.
2. Support players need to stay wide therefore
forcing the defensive players to make a
decision, either shut down on the half,
opening up the wide holes, or stay wide on
their opponent, opening up the hole for the
half.
3. Wingers need to stop at the score line and
only enter the score zone as a last resort.

Scooper scoops the ball and must run direct and through the No Go Zone. The Scooper is not allowed

The defensive lead Middle is not permitted to turn and chase till the Scooper passes the No Go Zone.
The defensive Saver is not allowed in the No Go Zone and cannot chase the scooper till the scooper
passes the No Go Zone. However the defensive Saver may touch the Scooper if the Scooper comes
close enough to be touched by the defensive Saver without the defensive Saver entering the No Go
Zone.
The defensive Wingers and Links must get back on side to the score line before they are permitted to
move forward and mark up.
The Half runner must get into the in goal and find an open player to score a touchdown.
