Endowment Fund for the Future EFF - CAPITAL RECRUITMENT FUND A. Basic Capital Equipment Purpose The Basic Capital Equipment part of the Capital Recruitment Fund is intended to assist in the recruitment of highly qualified appointees to tenure track faculty positions by providing up to $5,000 support per person for "start-up" costs. The Basic part of the fund will provide for equipment to support the basic teaching and research activities of new faculty including computing equipment and other capital equipment. Basic computing equipment may be purchased or leased. This part of the fund is not intended to provide for specialized computer or other research needs, or renovations. Eligibility All new tenure track faculty appointments (January or July of current year only) in the Faculties of Arts, Business, Education, Extension, Law, Nursing, Physical Education and Recreation, Rehabilitation Medicine, Faculté Saint-Jean, School of Native Studies, and Augustana are eligible for Part A. The other Faculties have access to funds from the Provost and VicePresident (Academic) capital contingency fund. Application Requests submitted by the Dean to Vice-Provost for each qualified faculty member should include: the name and department of the staff member the date of appointment if the appointment is part-time, % of FTE a brief statement of purpose for items requested a list specifying the items requested (indicate full price and GST) Deadline Applications may be submitted anytime between July 1 and December 31 immediately after hiring. Approval While approval is given for specific items, reasonable substitutions may be made provided that expenditures remain within the allocated amount. Equipment must be received and invoiced by March 31. Any excess funds will revert to the general fund at the end of each fiscal year. 1 Endowment Fund for the Future EFF - CAPITAL RECRUITMENT FUND B. Special Capital Equipment Purpose The Special part of the Capital Recruitment Fund is intended is to provide for specialized equipment that the most promising new faculty members in the humanities, social sciences and related professional areas need to develop or enhance their research programs. This portion of the fund is restricted to those fields of study that fall outside the NSERC, CIHR and AHFMR areas and hence the faculty members do not have access to grants for substantial capital expenditures for research. Eligibility All new tenure track faculty appointments in the Faculties of Agriculture Forestry and Home Economics, Arts, Business, Education, Extension, Law, Physical Education and Recreation, Faculté Saint-Jean, School of Native Studies, and Augustana whose research is not eligible for funding from NSERC, CIHR, or AHFMR are eligible to apply for one award for Special Capital Equipment. If an individual received significant start-up research funding (other than the basic amount) from another University source they are not eligible to apply to this fund. APPLICATION BEFORE HIRING Application may be made in advance of hiring by Deans when equipment becomes an issue at the time of recruitment. Because such cases need to be handled expeditiously, awards will be made on an individual basis. Oral requests to the Vice-Provost must be followed by a written specification of requirements and costs. APPLICATION AFTER HIRING After hiring, awards to new faculty members will be made on a competitive basis Applications should be received by April 1 and November 1 each year Requests for Special Capital Equipment must be submitted no later than the last competition before the faculty member's second anniversary of appointment to a tenure track position Special Capital Equipment requests should build on equipment purchased through the Basic Part of the EFF - Capital Recruitment Fund Requests from each faculty member should be written in language understandable to people outside the research area, and be submitted by the Dean to the Vice-Provost and include: o the name and department of the staff member o the date of appointment o if the appointment is part-time, % of FTE o a brief description of the individual's research program o specific equipment needs and their relation to the research program 2 o statement of all start-up money received, applied for, or denied from EFF, the faculty, or any other sources o a list of the individual items required and their costs (full price and GST) o a statement that the Faculty’s technical services and/or CNS can support the request.
