A guide to GHS
Compliance • Health & Safety • Best Practice
The GHS deadline is June 1, 2015.
Will your organization be ready?
Defining GHS
The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) provides a universal
means of identifying substances that can pose serious risks to health and safety. It affects organizations that
supply or use hazardous chemicals within the workplace and may be adopted to cover chemicals in the
transport, consumer products, pesticides and pharmaceutical industries. GHS also helps keep people
informed and safe and prevents businesses from losing manpower and other valuable resources.
GHS requires manufacturers, importers, downstream users and distributors of chemical substances and
mixtures to adopt the standard by June 1, 2015. All products falling within the scope of the regulation must
carry the GHS label at the point where they are supplied in the workplace and maintain the label throughout
the product’s use.
Achieving Compliance – Six Key Elements
Manufacturers must first classify their products into GHS “categories”
which leads to the creation of the following standardized elements that
are required to appear on the label:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Product identifier
Signal word
GHS pictograms
Hazard statements
Precautionary statements
Supplier information
