YMCA Basketball Game/League Rules: I. Sportsmanship: 1. Any player constantly verbally abusing a Y staff/volunteer member or opponent before, during, or after the game shall be ejected from that game and/or the next game. If deemed necessary other steps will be taken such as suspension from all other Y Leagues. Warnings shall be given before the ejection but in some cases ejections may be given without warning. Y staff has the right to remove a player/spectator or prohibit a team from playing due to unsportsmanlike conduct. 2. Any player or spectator who physically abuses a staff member, or opponent, which includes striking, spitting, pushing, charging, or threatening to physically harm someone shall be banned from the league for the remainder of the season and possibly the entire year. 3. Please Note: Players may not participate in two or more teams in any division and in the same sport during the League season. Also you only have 10 roster spots on your team. All players must be reported on your roster. II. Call Your Own Basketball All standard rules apply to “Call Your Own”. Please review these before your first game. The spirit of call your own is to uphold traditional playground basketball under supervised guidelines to ensure safety and sportsmanship. A. The Game, Players and Equipment 1. Each team is responsible for having a light/dark/uniform combination so two (2) distinct uniforms are on the court. 2. Five (5) players shall constitute a team. However, a team may start or continue play with a total of four (4) players. 3. Regular league games are played to 70 points. Games must be completed by five minutes prior to the next scheduled game. Therefore, if neither team is near 70 points, that the game will be played to a revised score. That score will be 4 points higher than the team with the higher score. Thus, if the score is 30-25, the game will be over when one team reaches 34 or more points. 4. Only the captain shall address the scorekeeper on matters of interpretation or to obtain essential information. 5. Substitutions: Subs may come in only during a dead ball situation. 6. Jewelry- Wear it at your own risk. The Y will not be responsible for lost or stolen Jewelry. 7. A jump ball will start the game. If there is a jump ball (tie up) the arrow will determine who keeps possession. This will determine the possession coming out of the half as well. 8. Out of bounds: The ball is in bounds if it touches the top of the backboard, however, if it touches the top and passes completely over it is out of bounds, and if it touches any of the backboard supports, or any other part of the facility structure. B. Periods and Time Factors 1. The game shall consist of two (2) halves; the first team to reach 35 points will bring halftime. Halftime shall be 3 minutes long. No overtime exists, since game ends as soon as one team reaches 70 or more points. 2. The game will not stop, except for time-outs, injuries and half-time. Each team is entitled to three (3) 60-second timeout per game. 3. Timeouts may be called by any player on the floor when on offense, or during a dead ball. C. Scoring 1. In the league all successful field goals shall be worth 2 points and successful three-pointers shall be worth 3 points. 2. Three-point shots must be taken completely behind the three-point arc. The offense makes this call. 3. Free throws are not awarded in “Call Your Own” Basketball. 4. However, If a foul occurs in the act of shooting, and the basket does not go in, the offense will be awarded 1 point and the ball, IF, the basket does go in the offense is awarded 1 point the basket counts but the ball will change possession. D. Foul Calling Perhaps the most critical part of “Call Your Own” is the player’s ability to fairly and consistently call fouls. A foul is an act by one player that creates or changes the advantage in the game. In the hopes of keeping the game going, fouls should only be called if they clearly effect a team’s advantage, safety, or sportsmanship. 1. The offended player must make the call. One’s teammates may not call a foul occurring against their own teammate. 2. The defense, in most cases, must “honor” the call. Respect the call!!! 3. If a dispute over a call occurs, the accused team may shoot for possession at the top of the key (3 point arc) (the defensive player directly involved in the play at the time of the questionable call must take the shot). This should rarely occur throughout the course of a game! 4. FLAGRANT FOULS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. If a team reports flagrant fouls or unsportsmanlike behavior, the message will be relayed to the Director and action will be taken, resulting in suspensions or forfeits. Repeated complaints or occurrences will result in suspension from the league. 5. Consistent Calls: Do not wait until the last couple of points to call a foul or violation. Please keep all calls consistent throughout the game. Do not stop the game because you assume a foul was made. If the offensive player didn’t call it play shall continue. E. Other Violations 1. Only players in the game can make violation calls. Such players may call traveling, 3 second violations, backcourt violations, out-of-bounds, etc. 2. On these types of violations, if two teams cannot agree, alternating possession shall be used. A. Travel, kick or fist - no player shall travel (run with the ball), kick, strike with the fist, or cause it to enter and pass through the basket from below. NOTE: Kicking the ball is a violation only when it is an intentional act (i.e. initiated by the kicker, meaning the foot was off the ground when the ball made contact). A ball glancing off a foot on the ground is not a kick. B. Double Dribble - a player shall not dribble a second time after his/her first dribble has ended, unless it is after he/she has lost control because of: 1. a try for a field goal. 2. a bat by an opponent 3. Pass or fumble which has then touched or been touched by another player opponent. C. Backcourt - a player shall not be the first to touch a ball that he/she or a teammate caused to go from front court to backcourt by being the last to touch the ball while it was in control of his/her team and before it went to the backcourt. D. Elbows - a player shall not excessively swing his/her arms or elbows, even though there is no contact with an opponent. If swinging results in contact with an opponent, it is of course, a personal foul regardless of the force with which the arms and elbows are swung. PENALTY: (for Sections A through E) Ball becomes dead or remains dead when violation occurs. Ball is awarded to a nearby opponent for a check. (See deadball and throw in situations) F. Basket Interference and Goal Tending 1. A player shall not touch the ball or basket (including net) when the ball is on or within the basket. 2. A player shall not touch the ball when any part of the ball is in the cylinder. The lower base of the cylinder is the rim of the basket. 3. A player shall not touch the ball during a field goal try while it is in its downward flight entirely above the basket rim level and has the possibility of entering the basket. 4. A player shall not strike or slap the backboard, causing the backboard or rim to vibrate during a shot. NOTE: If the ball has touched or been touched by a player before it began its downward flight or if the ball has touched the rim this restriction does not apply. 5. If any of the above violations occur the offense is awarded the basket. G. Deadball and Throw-In Situations 1. After any deadball situation (fouls, out of bounds, time-outs) the ball must always be checked by the defense, then the offense will put the ball in play. If the deadball situation occurs in the frontcourt, the ball will always be checked at the top of the three point line. If the deadball occurs in the backcourt it will be checked at the nearest boundary point. The throwin must take 5 seconds or less.
