History & Tradition
PHI GAMMA DELTA: FIJI
An International Fraternity
Since 1848
Founded in 1848, Phi Gamma Delta
currently has more than 6,000 undergraduate
brothers in 130 chapters throughout the United
States and Canada.
The Immortal Six founded Phi Gamma
Delta as a secret society. To this day, many of its
traditions, rituals, and everyday matters remain
secret and are known only to the Brotherhood.
Since 1858, FIJI has been a strong presence at
the University of Virginia. Located at 128
Madison Lane, the Brotherhood resides in one of
the finest fraternity houses on Grounds.
The Brotherhood of Phi Gamma Delta
would like to welcome you to our chapter.
In the past 150 years, FIJI has established itself
as one of the foremost fraternities on Grounds.
You may notice that we do things differently;
that we do things better.
Colegate W. Darden Jr. was one of the many
famous Virginia FIJI graduates. Calvin Coolidge,
Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Carson, and Admiral
William Crowe were some of the distinguished
men to have graduated elsewhere as FIJI’s.
Today, the Brotherhood is made up of men
who want to carry on this tradition of excellence.
We feel that a strong fraternity is the result of a
strong brotherhood – and that is what we base
our chapter on.

If you are interested in shaping a better
fraternity; if brotherhood and excellence are
what you think a fraternity should revolve
around, then we urge you to consider Phi
Gamma Delta.
The Brotherhood
The FIJI Difference
FIJI is looking for more than most
fraternities. We are looking for the few students
who encompass the spirit of a FIJI gentleman.
Brotherhood is also about having a good
time together. Because of this, FIJI has more
Brotherhood Events than any other fraternity.
Our house is made up of Student Leaders,
Varsity Athletes, Jefferson Scholars, Madison
House Volunteers, Rodman and Echols
Scholars, ROTC Cadets, and students of all
majors and disciplines.
Why FIJI?
There are many benefits to joining a
fraternity and especially FIJI. We provide the
opportunity for leadership, academic assistance,
career development, community service, planned
and informal social events, intramural
competition, and housing.
Our Fraternity provides an atmosphere
where brothers can grow together while
respecting each others diversity.
Phi Gamma Delta exists to promote
lifelong friendships, reaffirm high ethical
standards and values, and foster personal
development in the pursuit of excellence.
FIJI is committed to providing opportunities
for each brother to develop responsibility,
leadership, scholarship, and social skills in
order to become a better gentleman and
leader.
The FIJI house is located right next to
Grounds and the corner. Once you see the
inside, you will know why it is the best on
Grounds. And the cost of living in the house is
so low that the amount you save on rent can
actually pay for your chapter dues.
We are proud of the number of FIJI
Fridays, Sorority Mixers, Camping Trips, Sports
Events, and Dinners we attend together.
Our pledge process is value based and haze
free. We initiate only gentlemen and leaders.
Our reputation allows us to have one of the
most active social calendars on Grounds.
Strong Graduate Brother and National
support means Phi Gamma Delta is for more
than college years alone.
Thank you for your interest in our Chapter.
Please feel free to call and come visit anytime
you like.
