- invented in 1907 in England by Joseph Lang by necking a .500 case down to .470
- made for hunting dangerous game in warmer climates
- built to replace the banned .450 nitro express
- usually found in single shot and double barreled firearms
- one of the first large smokeless powder rounds (nitro for nitrocellulose and nitroglycerine)
Hunting Uses: - Dangerous game (elephant, lion, buffalo, tiger, rhino)
Ballistics:
- Average speed 2100 FPS
- Average energy 5000 foot pounds
- Point blank: 100 yards, most game killed within 50 yards
- 500 grain bullets most common
Pluses:
- fairly common and wide variety of ammunition available
Minuses:
- recoil
- cost of ammunition
- limited use on game other than large, dangerous game
