United States Gaming Industry Overview
U.S. gaming revenue grew 7% in 2004 to reach an all-time
high of $77.6 billion. Tribal gaming showed the greatest
increase, up 12% from 2003 revenues.
Lotteries and commercial casino and card room revenue grew
more than 6% in 2004. Charitable gaming, race and sports
wagering declined from 2003 totals.
Commercial casino and card room gaming led other gaming
segments with a 39% share of total revenue, lotteries accounted
for 28%, and tribal gaming came in at 25%. Race and sports

Canadian Gaming Industry Overview
In 2004, Canadian gaming revenue grew 1.8% to reach a
total of $10.3 billion. Lotteries and casino and card room
gaming accounted for 89% of Canadian gaming revenue.

U.S. State Gaming Revenue
Nevada ranked #1 in 2004 with $10.5 billion in gaming
revenue. California, New Jersey and New York finished out
the top four with $8.25 billion, $6 billion, and $4.2 billion,
respectively.

U.S. State Gaming Revenue Growth
In 2004, 17 U.S. states had higher gaming revenue growth
rates than Nevada. At the top of the list was Wyoming
with 66% growth. At the bottom was North Carolina with a
decline of 16%.

U.S. State Gaming Revenue per Capita
In 2004, gaming revenue in Nevada reached $4,500 per
resident on average, or 12% of the state’s GDP. Mississippi
came in a clear second with $1,078 per capita, followed by
Delaware with $886. With its large population, California
only placed 23rd with $230 in gaming revenue per resident
despite ranking second in overall gaming revenue.

State of Nevada Overview
Nevada gaming revenue, after adjusting for inflation,
dropped slightly each year from 2000 to 2003 and then
grew 8.6%, or 5.7% after adjusting for inflation, between
2003 and 2004.
The state of Nevada contains 2,524 gaming properties, 208,220
slot machines, 6,193 table games, 784 poker tables, and 750
electronic bingo machines.

World Gaming Industry Overview
More than 150 countries around the world participate in
some form of legalized gambling from casino and card
room gaming, lotteries and charitable gaming to online
gaming and race and sports wagering.
Our research shows that more than 100 countries around the world
participate in legalized casino and card room gambling. Lotteries
are just as widespread with more than 100 countries offering
some kind of lottery product. Online gaming is licensed in 37
jurisdictions around the world.
Horse and dog tracks have felt increasing financial pressure from
the proliferation of casinos and lotteries over the past decade.
Recent strategies to improve performance include a global circuit
of premier races and the addition of slots and table games to
existing facilities. More than 60 nations participate in the race
betting industry.
