Title: Game Scene in Kuopio - Co-operation to Promote Healthy Gaming and Youth Welfare
Context:
Games, gamification and digitalization cause concerns for parents and sometimes for adolescence. Collecting information
about today’s digital culture and its usage and make this information known helps us develop ways to recognize and prevent
risk behaviour. Co-creating positive atmosphere together with game developers, gamers and NGO’s helps us understand digital
culture as a part of everyday life.
Rationale:
The unique co-operation with NGO’s, communal services, game development and business in Kuopio area supports communal
early life goals and welfare of youth and other citizens in Kuopio area. Games and healthy gaming are used as vectors to boost
everyday welfare and create new opportunities to all stake holders in Kuopio region.
Description:
Games for Health Finland is a network that promotes health by emphasizing prevention of diseases, affecting the lifestyle
changes and self-care. Key focuses are in promotion of health, functionality and rehabilitation and treatment of diseases.
Gamification in health promotion is all about the games cited characteristics and application of the technologies. This can
involve, motivate, inspire and commit people for better everyday health.
Bringing health games and game developers to the gamers and future workforce, allows us to show possible future trends in
digital world and inspire diginatives to develop their interest in to a skill that they benefit in the future. At the same time we lower
the threshold between digital generation and their parents allowing them to understand each other. Bringing the digital world
into the area that isn’t so comfortable for active gamers also allows to discuss other aspects of life and its management.
Achievements:
The common goal in the game scene in Kuopio is to promote healthy gaming and to create positive atmosphere for youth to
talk about games, gaming and game related problems. Annual LAN -event GyoStage, Health Game Jams and monthly PopUp game events are some practical examples of this co-operation.
How it relates to the Conference theme:
By improving people's access to health information and their capacity to use it effectively, health literacy and health
communication is critical to empowerment. Solving the problems related to risks of gaming and digital world, helps us build
resilient and sustainable community with capable workforce.
Conclusion:
Lowering the threshold between communal services and adolescence living in a digital world by providing information and
scientific studies about gaming and digital world with the twist of actual gaming provides us relaxed atmosphere to discuss
problems and risks concerning the subject.
