VEX Design Problem 1: Hazardous Waste Disposal The Problem: Copy and Paste these questions into the template. Design and build a remotely controlled robot that can collect various objects scattered over a large play-field and deposit them in a goal. At the end of a timed round the robot scoring the most points will be deemed the WINNER. You will drive the robot via a Go Pro camera that is controlled by an iPad from behind a barrier so all you have to view is that the Go Pro is seeing. Materials and Restrictions: Copy and Paste these questions into the template. VEX robotics kit and included instructions The play field will have 2 levels therefore your robot must be able to climb The goal areas will be small buckets approximately 3 inches high on all sides, in order to score any points you must deposit items in the bucket. All the time of the competition, the driver will not be able to see the robot. Hazardous Waste Point Values: Contaminated Area (play field Research Questions: Copy and Paste these questions into the template. 1. What are gears and why are they used? 2. Define the term gear ratio and give an example. 3. You will “see” through your robot’s eye(s) in order to complete this challenge. Explain the importance of mounting the camera in a secure location. 4. Why would a robot be well-suited to garbage collection or hazardous waste clean-up? 5. Explain why the small wheels may not be the best option for this challenge. Assessment and Timeline: Result Points Breakdown Your group will complete a standard design rubric for this challenge and be evaluated using the design challenge rubric. Your group is to use the template function on Google Docs like you have for every other project this year. Your group should have a working solution by Friday May 8th without the camera. The final contest with GoPro cameras attached will take place on Thursday May 14 th and Monday May 18th. The report will be submitted by Tuesday May 19th.
