Basketball
The picture above shows how a basketball court looks and the measurements. The boundaries are
the baseline and the sidelines. This is where the game of basketball is played. If the ball or
players go outside these lines then are out of bounds. The half court line separates the two sides.
Every game starts with a jump ball. A jump ball is where a player from both teams is in the
middle of the court and the referee throws the ball in the air. The players will jump and hit the
ball to their team. The objective of the game is to score. To score you have to shoot the
basketball in the hoop. There is a 3 point line where the offensive can score a 3 pointer. Anything
in front of the 3 point line is 2 points (lay-up, shot, dunk). The free throw counts for 1 point.
When a player gets fouled when shooting the ball, he/she will attempt a free-throw. During this
free throw the other player will line up on the free throw lane in between the lines. There are two
basketball hoops on each side. High school, College and Professional basketball all have two
halves. High school and Professional have 4 quarters of 8 minutes or 12 minutes.
