Catch us on Instagram- stmargaretmaryschool Dear St. Margaret Mary School families, Happy Sunday! Hope all is well on this third October Sunday of the month. This past week at S.M.M.S has been quite busy yet exciting! 1. The first kick off meeting to our ‘school newspaper’ took place on Friday. The Journalism Club, headed by SMMS Alum (Class of 2013) and Notre Dame Academy standout, Kristen Hull is comprised of 32 students who will collaborate together to produce a school newspaper. 2. Although we have a strict uniform code, it is an “8th grade privilege” for our graduating class to design their own sweat shirts. This year’s awesome sweat shirts were designed by 2017 class member Camrin Burkhammer. Complete with names and mine-craft depictions of our graduates, these sweats shirts are ‘perfection.’ Thank you Camrin for sharing your artistic talent with your classmates! 3. Our Cross Country team proved that they can compete with the best during their track meet in Cerritos last weekend. A big congratulations to all our students who competed and brought home ‘winning ribbons.’ Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Schwab (our bookkeeper) for coaching our SMMS Cross Country team. 4. The Lomita Fire Station paid a ‘happy’ visit to our T.K, Kindergarten, First grade, Second grade, third grade and fourth grade classes. With sirens and fire hats, our city’s fire fighters, complete with their big red truck, rolled onto our campus to talk to our little ones about fire safety. Thank you Mrs. Vicelja for organizing that wonderful event. 5. These days, our campus after school (2:45 – 7:00 p.m) is as busy as ever! On the junior high level, ‘after school’ help is being offered by Mr. Hull, Ms. Benitez, Mrs. Quinn and myself. Our athletes are also quite busy participating in our many Fall sports offerings such as volleyball, football, cross country and golf. Young SMMS writers are meeting to produce our FIRST EDITION of our school newspaper. You can also find Mrs. Hines and her team of student council members on Tuesday afternoons, busy planning and preparing fun activities for the student body. 6. The exciting week ended with a wonderful ‘All School Mass’ hosted by the 8th grade Class. They did a beautiful job planning and preparing a Mass which paid tribute and honored our patron saint, Saint Margaret Mary. Thank you ‘the Class of 2017, Mrs. Quinn, Kent, and Fr. Marinello! Looking Ahead… 7. STAR TESTING BEGINS MONDAY! This is the second round of standardized tests. The children will take four of these before the academic school year ends. With four sets of scores, we will be able to analyze the data to improve student learning. Please make sure that your child has a hearty breakfast and good night’s sleep! 8. MONDAY, OCTOBER 17TH IS NOT A HALF DAY. 9. No school on Wednesday October 19th. The faculty will be gathering together to prepare for our WASC accreditation come February. 10. “Dress for Change!” is on October 20th. If your child brings in a dollar on that day, he/she may wear ‘free dress.’ 11. FALL MAKE – UP PICTURES – is on Friday, October 21st. If your child was absent on picture day in September or you would like your child to re-take their photo, please fill out the form sent in the family envelope last Wednesday.
