CAN8 Language Training System:
Quick Guide to the Menu, Player and Tracker for Instructors using CAN8
Click on the Main Menu icon to
display the Menu of lessons.
Click again on the Main Menu icon to
hide the Menu of lessons.
Main Menu
Expand or contract submenus by
clicking on the + or - signs.
Select a lesson to highlight the Player
and Tracker icons. These icons may
or may not be enabled depending on
what level of user you are.

Tracker
Select a lesson from the Main Menu.
Click Player to play that lesson.
Click Tracker to track that lesson.
Multiple Players and Trackers can be tabbed across the top of
the play window as they are opened from the Main Menu.
Click on a tab to
display and use that
Player or Tracker.
Click on the small
“x” at the right of
the play window to
close the active tab.

The Tracker
Tracker
VIEW
Use the
scroll bars
to move
across and
down the
screen.
Use the View
menu options to
select the
students or the
Class you wish
to view in the
Tracker.
Online =
real time
Sorted =
alphabetical
Each box is one response to a
question. The title of the question
displays as you click on its box.
Use the ZOOM tool to expand the
Tracker screen. Click “+” to expand
and “-“ to contract.
Colour Codes in the Tracker Screen:
Blue: the student has answered this Multiple Choice or Fill Blanks question correctly.
Purple: the student has answered this Multiple Choice or Fill Blanks question INCORRECTLY.
Grey (with a
or “None”) : the student has recorded a response that the instructor has not yet listened to.
Green: the instructor has listened to the student’s recorded response.
Red: the instructor has recorded feedback for the student and the student has not yet recorded a new response.
Yellow: the student has received the instructor’s feedback and has recorded a new response.
EMPTY: the student has not yet responded to the item.
Flashing black: your cursor is on that box.
Note:
A large number of purple or empty boxes appearing horizontally across the student’s path indicates that the student requires
special attention.
A large number of purple boxes appearing vertically down a lesson indicates that the item may be too difficult for the class, or,
there is an error in the question. Click to open a purple box and see the errors the students are making.
To listen to how each student is responding to one particular item, click vertically down the lesson to listen to the responses to
that item. When all the boxes have turned green, this indicates you have listened to each student’s response to that item.

Listen to a student’s recorded response.
Double click on a box, or,
select a box and click Play
to listen to the student’s
response for that item.
Click on the model icon to listen to the
model from the lesson (if a model exists
for that item).
Note: if the Player for the
lesson is open while
Tracking, the instructor
can click on the lesson’s
Player tab to quickly
check the contents of the
lesson.

TESTING: Deliver, Score, Review
1. DELIVER:
Tracker - TEST
Always make sure all tests on the system are set to Wait
To Start.
Wait to Start blocks the test from all students until the
instructor delivers the test.
Take Test releases the Test to all users. Take test means
that students can answer the questions only once (unless
a menu is provided for the lesson).
As the students enter the test
lesson, their names will appear
highlighted on the Tracker screen,
showing they are online and ready.
Start All releases the Test to all the names that are visible
in the Tracker screen. Use the VIEW option to adjust the
visible names. Start Student will release the test to just
one student who is visible.
Tracker - VIEW
Use the View menu options to
select the students or the Class
you wish to view in the Tracker.
View by Class:
Move the class or classes you
wish to view and test from the
right side of the box to the left
side.
2. SCORE:
M and F items are automatically
scored. Expand the tracker to
view the marks in the boxes.
To score recorded answers,first
Play the recording. Then type a
number on the keyboard to
enter the mark. The mark is
displayed at the bottom of the
Tracker.
Right click on the marks
column to change subtotals to
cumulative.
As you play the recordings to mark
them, the boxes turn green,
indicating your scoring progress.
Use Test-Show Scores or the
Calculator Tool to total or
subtotal the marks.
Right click to change a subtotal
to a cumulative mark or to
delete the marks column.
Use Edit – Preferences – Tracker to
adjust how marks are calculated.

Using the mouse, drag the calculator tool
to the scored area to create a marks
column. You can create more than one
marks column.

3. REVIEW:
With the marks columns
displayed, select Review
Results to have the students
see their scores for each item.
Students can play each item and see
their mark but cannot change their
answers.
Use Test- Final Mark to have
students see their total score
and rank in the class.
Copy or drag the Tracker screen
into an Excel spreadsheet.
Use Edit - Preferences – Tracker to
adjust what data is copied to Excel.
File-Print the Tracker screen to
paper.
Use File-Export to save any
recordings outside CAN8.
Use File-Delete Student to
clear a student’s record
permanently for a re-take.
