Stay in authorized areas. No chasing or tag games are allowed during recess or lunch times. No rough play – ie: Karate, “Power Rangers”, wrestling, or pushing. The red rubber balls should never be kicked. Do not throw objects. (rocks, sticks, wood chips) Run on blacktop only when playing organized games. Walk in the hallways. Restrooms No visits to the restrooms or drinking fountains after the bell. No playing, climbing or yelling in the restrooms. Use and dispose of toilet paper and paper towels properly. No splashing water on the floor or walls. Recess Referrals Fighting or intimidation. Failure to follow directions by a teacher/supervisor. Using bad/unkind words or obscene acts. Disrespectful behavior Habitual disregard of playground rules. Teasing Line up at the end of Recess A freeze whistle will be blown at the end of morning and lunch recesses. Students will squat quietly when this first whistle is blown. Those students having playground balls or jump ropes will hold them. A second whistle will be blown and students will walk quietly to their lines. Rules for playground equipment and games Bars: One at a time on each section. Keep hands on bars at all times. One turn is to a count of 100. Basketball: No more than five players on a team. Play on half of the court when more than ten players want to play, or if there is a disagreement over grade level or gender participation. After a missed shot the original team may shoot again without taking the ball to the top of the key by an opposing team before a goal may be scored. The ball is given to the opposing team out of bounds for: Traveling – taking more than one step without dribbling, passing, or shooting Double dribbling – dribbling the ball with two hands Kicking the ball Stepping out of bounds A player is given a free throw for personal fouls of: holding, pushing, hitting, tripping, running into, or blocking the path of another player. Big Toy Do not play tag or chase. Do not push. One at a time on the slide. Never climb up the slide. No running on the big toy. Dodge Ball Use a rubber ball. No one within the circle may touch the ball. A player must be hit below the waist as judged when he is in a standing position. Only the first player hit below the waist is out. No passing of the ball to another team member on the outside circle. No slamming a person with the ball. Four Square/Two Square Use a rubber ball. The server, serves the ball from the service area. The ball must be tapped with the hands, not held or thrown, no fists. The ball must bounce once before it is hit. If the ball hits a line, it is a fair ball. No “cuts” while waiting in the line for your turn. No hard “slams”. (Do not hit the ball so hard that it does not bounce high enough to be returned). The player who is waiting first in line is the “judge”. Handball Handball courts are to be used for handball only. No “kickback” or kicking the ball against the wall. A player stands behind the 6 foot serving line and serves the ball against the wall so that it rebounds within the court boundaries. The players must wait until the ball has bounced before returning the serve. This return may rebound anywhere on the court. After the serve, the ball may be played on the fly or after the bounce. The player may use one or both hands. A player may not hit the ball more than once; players must alternate hitting the ball. A player is out when one of the following violation is committed by a player: o The ball is hit after is bounces twice. o A good serve is not made in two tries. o A player interferes with the play of another player. o The ball rebounds outside with court boundaries. Line balls are good. Hopscotch A “miss” means you have to go to the end of the line and wait your turn. A “miss” is: o The marker is thrown in the wrong square or goes out of bounds. o You jump in a square that has a marker in it. o You pick up the wrong marker. o You change feet in hopping. o You put your hand in a square that has a marker in it. Horizontal Ladder (Kindergarten) Go in one direction and keep moving. Wait in line for your turn. Do not climb or sit on the top. No “chicken fighting”. Jump Rope A person who misses his/her turn takes an end. The next person to miss takes the other end and so on. The rope is not used for anything but jumping rope. Do not tie jump ropes together. Kickball A kicker is allowed three kicks (three strikes). If he kicks a foul ball on the third kick, it does not count as a strike. A fair pitched ball is pitched underhand, does not bounce too high, and must travel over any part of home plate. The kicker is allowed four balls, and then can walk to first base. The fair ball includes all parts of all four bases and the foul lines. No stealing bases. The runner must wait on base until the ball leaves the pitcher’s hand. No leads. The runner advances only to one base on an overthrow. Soccer Soccer should only be played in the designated area. A foul is committed for unnecessary roughness, charging from behind, pushing, holding, tripping or jumping on an opponent. Only the goalkeeper can touch the ball with any part of his/her hands or arms. A player is not allowed to play the ball a second time before it has been played by another player. The goalkeeper cannot take more than four steps while holding the ball. Swings Sit on the swing. One at a time on the swing. Swing back and forth, not side to side. No pushing or helping others to swing. Stay away from the person swinging. Count only on someone when all swing are taken. One turn is 50 times up and back. Tether Ball Each player must stay on his/her side. Climbing or touching the pole is not allowed. No chances are allowed. The ball should be truck with a closed hand. The server is the newcomer to the game. Serving The server starts the game by tossing the ball into the air and striking it with his/her fist. As the ball travels around the pole, the server attempts to hit it again and again in the direction of the original serve. The opposing player tries to wind the rope around the pole by hitting the ball back in the opposite direction. The ball is not considered in play until the server’s opponent has had an opportunity to hit the ball at least once. Object of the Game Wrap the ball completely around the pole, or it the “other” player violates a playing rule by committing a foul. After winning two games, the winner must go out of the game. The winner is the player that completely wraps the ball. Fouls Play stops immediately after a foul has been committed. A player who commits any of the following fouls forfeits the game to his opponent: 1. 2. 3. 4. Hitting the ball with any part of the body other than the hands or forearms. Stopping continuous play by holding or catching the ball. Touching the pole with any part of the body. Touching the rope with any part of the body, even accidentally. 5. Stepping on or beyond the boundary lines. 6. Catching the ball. 7. Being a poor sport. This includes arguing about what is called. The First person in line for the next game is the judge. This person will confirm any questions for calls by observing the game. BE READY - Be prepared when the teacher calls your name. - Transition quickly to the next subject or activity. - Listen for directions. - Enter and exit the game quickly when it is your turn. - Line up at appropriate times. - Pay attention to where the line is moving. - Face forward and watch where the line is moving. - Have your lunch number prepared and be ready at the front of the line. -Know your after school plans and parent designated location. - Be an active listener and aware of adults on duty. - Be watching for the person who picks you up. - Be alert. - Observe time limits.
