I. ROOSEVELT TO WILSON A. ROOSEVELT 1. Roosevelt was the first Progressive President; his policies were the SQUARE DEAL a. He took a very active role in business by bringing 44 Anti-trust suits to break up monopolies. b. He was active in Conservation and set aside 150 million acres of land , set up irrigation projects in the west, and established the National Conservation Commission. 2. He was active in Foreign Policy a. His motto was “Speak Softly and Carry a Big Stick”. b. He had the Panama canal built to create a direct route from the Pacific to the Atlantic 1) Our choices were Nicaragua and Panama. 2) He sent our ships to sit off the coast of Panama during a revolution that would end in a government favorable to allowing the canal. This was called “gunboat diplomacy” by his critics. 3) Building started in 1904 and ended in 1914. 4) Many workers died because of illnesses like Yellow Fever. c. He was the first American to win the Nobel Peace Prize. 1) He won in 1906 2) It was for negotiating a peace treaty between Russia and Japan. d. He added the ROOSEVELT COROLLARY to the Monroe Doctrine. 1) It said the U.S. has the right to intervene between Europe and the Western Hemisphere even in domestic affairs to maintain order. 2) This made us the “International Police Power.” 3) This expanded our role in the Central America and the Caribbean. B. TAFT 1. He was a very big man (320 pounds) who actually got stuck in the White House bathtub one time. 2. He relied on “Dollar Diplomacy” to control other countries through monetary aid. 3. During his Presidency 2 amendments were passed: a. 16th—It established the income tax b. 17th—It set up direct election of senators C. WILSON 1.
