HOW DO I GET TO THE GLACIER? 5 Athletes walk in their ski groups from the Tantalus Lodge to the base of Blackcomb, which is an 8-10 minute walk. Departure time for the lift is determined by each group. To get to the snow: ride the Wizard Quad then the Solar Coaster Quad, next load the bus and ride the 7th Heaven lift to the snow. Coaches will lead you up on the opening day. While training on the glacier we will be riding T Bars. Please note it is important to ride all lifts with care and obey all the rules of the ski area. Unsafe or improper behavior will not be tolerated. WHAT WILL THE SKIING BE LIKE? We will be training in our own lanes. The snow will be salted and hard, but it might be slushy skiing to the lift and in the lift line. You will be riding a T-Bar to access the training lane. There will be other campers there, but none will be skiing in our lane with us. HOW, WHEN AND WHERE WILL I TUNE MY SKIS? Coaches will be available to assist with ski tuning. Some athletes may choose to leave skis up at the glacier on the public ski racks overnight and tune every other day or so (depending on conditions). If you want to tune your skis every night, tuning benches and vices will be set up and provided for you by Sports Club International. You will need to bring your own tuning supplies and wax. Harder, colder wax is recommended for the glacier conditions. Campers can also choose to have their skis tuned by staff for a fee of $35/tune and wax. WHAT WILL WE EAT? Meals: Breakfast and dinner we will eat at our hotel. Lunch we will eat up on the glacier. Breakfast: Meals will be different each day but will include: pancakes, French toast, cereal, toast, eggs, bacon, sausage, breakfast burritos, fruit, tea, and juice. Lunches: There will be lunch items available at breakfast for each athlete to pack his or her own box lunch to bring in the backpack up to the glacier including sandwich fixings (lunchmeat, cheese, PB&J), chips, fruit, sweet treats. Dinners: Dinners will be served meals. They will include pasta meals, tacos, and chicken. We will also be having a lakeside 6 BBQ one night and a pizza night by the pool at the Tantalus Lodge. WHAT ARE THE LIVING ARRANGEMENTS LIKE? Each room at the Tantalus Lodge has two bedrooms and a living area. There is a queen bed, two twin beds and a pullout couch in the living room. The rooms also have a kitchenette and 2 bathrooms. We assign 5 campers of similar ages to each condo. Coaches’ rooms are interspersed with campers units on the same floor. ARE THERE LAUNDRY FACILITIES AVAILABLE? Yes, there is a coin-operated laundry facility available at the Lodge. They also have a pool, volleyball court, tennis court, basketball court and hot tub. Look at their website for more information and photos: http://www.tantaluslodge.com. IS THERE INTERNET AT THE TANTALUS? Yes, free wi-fi is available throughout the lodge. WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT WHEN I CROSS INTO CANADA? When you arrive in Canada, you will go through customs at the airport. You will be asked to show your passport, and the customs agent might ask you where you are going and how long you will be staying. The lines at customs can be up to an hour long. Be prepared and be patient. When we travel back into the U.S., the same thing will occur. You will be asked if you are bringing anything back into the country and you will need to fill out a customs form, which we will help you with. Because you are traveling outside your country and as a representative of Sports Club International Ski Camps, we ask that you dress appropriately and show respect for airport officials and other travelers. WHERE WILL I MEET The Sports Club International STAFF? Once you have cleared customs, proceed through the glass doors into the receiving area at the airport. We will be centered at the Wooden Indian Statues in the International Arrivals lobby. These are located at the base of the escalators. Please remember you are attending The Sports Club International Ski Camps, so look for our signage and smiling faces. 7 Children traveling as Unaccompanied Minors-required by some airlines-will be escorted by an airline agent and need to be released to a staff member. Campers traveling on domestic flights (from inside Canada) will be met in the Domestic Arrival Terminal. Please look for the Sports Club International Staff wearing the traditional tie dye shirt. Feel free to call Sara Radamus 970-390-1319 cell, if you have any problems. WHAT IS THE CAMPER OF THE DAY? The Sports Club International strives to help build good people while developing good ski racers. And to reward that, Each day, a camper best exhibiting the following important qualities, is presented with a small token of award. CAMPER OF THE DAY CRITERIA: These recipients exhibit an outstanding effort in the areas of athleticism, sportsmanship, dedication, persistence, honesty, and/or integrity. 2017 Camper of the Day Is Sponsored by START HAUS (STARTHAUS.COM). ARE THERE ANY OTHER CAMP SPONSORS? We would like to take this opportunity to thank SPYDER and SUREFOOT FOOT BEDS for being our loyal sponsors over the past several years. Should you need some cool race clothes or some fine tuning to make your boots fit well, please consider choosing POC helmets: http://www.pocsports.com, SYNC Speed Suits; http://www.syncperformance.com and Surefoot; www.surefoot.com. SUREFOOT’s Whistler Store is open and ready to help fit your boots upon your arrival. Their support along with their outstanding products, make us proud to be associated with these fine companies. We appreciate your support of them as well. CAN I DEMO SKIS AT CAMP? Each year many ski companies have demo equipment available to test while at camp. Fischer, Rossignol, Salomon, Dynastar, Nordica, Volkl among others have offered their products in the past. As the camp is located in Canada, often we are interacting with the Canadian sales, promotional, service and equipment representative. We encourage athletes to try equipment but ask that you not allow it to interrupt your training time. It’s also important that you be polite and be 8 extremely appreciative to the hard working representative who is making this opportunity possible. ARE THERE ANY BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS? The athletes of Sports Club International are expected to be respectful and courteous to teammates, coaches, other campers and coaches, ski area personnel, hotel and food service employees, and airport officials. Each athlete is trusted to act in the best interest of his/her own athletic and personal goals. As a result of each camper’s commitment, Sports Club International Ski Camps prosper in an environment where drugs, alcohol, cigarette smoking, smokeless tobacco, lack of respect, dishonesty and other substandard values are not tolerated and where all have the opportunity to develop as individuals, athletes and members of the community. Athletes not adhering to these values will be sent home immediately. Expectations As developing athletes, we expect campers to be respectful of coaches, staff and fellow campers. Cigarette smoking, smokeless tobacco, drinking and drugs are absolutely not allowed at the Sports Club International Summer Camps. Athletes are not allowed in rooms other than their own. There is ample pubic space for athletes to interact with each other. Curfews and check out/in procedures are expected to be adhered to at all times. Anyone breaking these rules will be sent home immediately at the camper’s expense. If needed, we will provide a staff person to escort your child from Whistler to the airline for a $500 fee. All costs for early departure are the responsibility of the camper’s family. Our coaches are firm in their expectations of the behavior expected from the children, however, and most importantly, they enjoy children and work to ensure everyone is safe and having a good time. The coaches feel it is a privilege to work with committed athletes and are confident there will be no problems requiring disciplinary action. If a problem arises in which an athlete fails to live by these standards, there will be reasonable and appropriate consequences for the conduct violation. 9 WHAT SORT OF CONDITIONING ACTIVITIES WILL WE DO? As you have probably noted, we are a SKI camp. Our focus is on developing the athletic skills vital to skiing on and off the hill in as safe of environments as possible. We offer activities which are fun and beneficial for ski racers: tennis, golf, swimming, hiking, strength routines, stretching, organized games; soccer, flicker and ultimate being some examples.
