DimensionM Math Curriculum Alignments Finding Connections – DimensionM Games and Your Classroom To make the most of DimensionM games as a tool in your classroom, it’s crucial that you can easily find connections between the skills your students will encounter in the games and the skills that you are working on in your classroom. Our online curriculum alignment tool will help you to do just that. Once you’ve logged in on the Educator Portal (https://edportal.DimensionU.com), you’ll find a link to the Curriculum Alignments on the right side of the Home Page. Just click the link and a new browser window will open to automatically direct you to the right place. Or, you can go direct to the Curriculum Alignments page at http://www.dimensionu.com/curriculumalignments. Once there you’ll see a page with these options for getting started: You can choose one of three ways to start your search: Search by State, Search by Textbook, or Search by DimensionM Math Skill. From there, use a combination of the drop-down menus and keyword search fields to get the results you’re looking for. On the following pages are some tips to get you started. Search by State Page 2 Search by Textbook Page 4 Search by DimensionM Math Skill Page 6 Understanding Search Results Page 8 Tabula Digita © 2009 V2.0 Page 1 of 9 DimensionM Math Curriculum Alignments Search by State Use this option when you want to know the answer to the question: “Which skills in the DimensionM games are aligned to my state standards?” Simply select your state from the drop-down menu and click ‘Go!’ to get started. We have alignments for all 50 states. On the next page, you’ll be able to select from multiple sets of standards for your state, where applicable—we have alignments to more than 110 sets of state standards in all. These standards, and our alignments to them, are updated annually to stay in sync with ongoing revisions. Limiting the Number of Results After making your selection, your state will be listed at the top of the page. For this sample, we selected Texas. You can refine your search to get only the results you’re looking for. The first drop-down menu allows you to decide the breadth of your alignment, either a broad search against all state standards or limited to a particular set if your state has more than one set of standards. EXAMPLE: The drop-down menu will list the following sets of standards for Texas: - All TX State Standards - Selecting this shows the superset of all DimensionM skills aligned to all available sets of standards Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) Selecting this limits the results to DimensionM skills aligned to the broader set of TEKS skills mandated by the state curriculum Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) Selecting this limits the results to DimensionM skills aligned to the narrower set of TAKS skills mandated by the state assessment After choosing a set of standards, the second drop-down menu allows you to select a grade level or band for the selected set of standards. The elements on the list match the coverage in each particular set of standards. For instance, in Illinois the Learning Standards are broken into five grade bands, while the Performance Descriptors are broken into ten stages. NOTE: You can select a numeric grade level from the second drop down without selecting a particular set of standards. In this case, results will be returned for all sets of available state standards and include the best matches for the chosen grade level with each set of standards. Tabula Digita © 2009 V2.0 Page 2 of 9 DimensionM Math Curriculum Alignments Use this field to narrow your search to include only standards which contain a particular keyword or phrase. TIPS FOR USING OUR KEYWORD SEARCH The search will return only standards with an exact match for the word or phrase that you enter. For example, entering “multiply” will return standards including the words multiply and multiplying but not the word multiplication. Similarly, phrases will only return exact matches. EXAMPLE: Let’s say that you want to find out which DimensionM skills are aligned to New York Core Curriculum standard 6.N.17: “Multiply and divide fractions with unlike denominators.” If you selected NY Core Curriculum from the Select State Standards drop-down menu, and typed multiply fractions in the search box, you would get no results since those two words do not appear together, in that order, in the skill description. On the other hand, a search for the keyword fractions would return the result you were looking for, along with any other skills containing the word. TIP: To ensure that you find what you’re looking for, it’s best to consult the language in your state standards or textbook and use a descriptive two- or three-word phrase taken directly from the text. Use these drop-down menus to select a DimensionM Game (DimensionM Multiplayer, Evolver Single Player, or Dimenxian Single Player). After you select a particular game, sub-menus will appear and populate with the options allowing you to see skills specific to that game. This list shows the parameters available for each game: DimensionM Multiplayer v3 / Level (Grade) / Topic / Skill Evolver Single Player / Mission / Skill Dimenxian Single Player / Mission / Skill HINT: You’ll find a sample screenshot on page 6. Tabula Digita © 2009 V2.0 Page 3 of 9 DimensionM Math Curriculum Alignments Search by Textbook Use this option when you want to know the answer to the question: “Which skills in the DimensionM games are aligned to the lessons in my textbook?” Click ‘Go!’ to get started. We currently have alignments to popular textbook titles from McGraw-Hill, Pearson/Prentice Hall, Holt, and McDougal Littell, with more publishers and titles on the way. Limiting the Number of Results After landing on the next page, you can see which textbooks we currently have alignments to and refine your search to get only the results you’re looking for. The first step is to use the drop-down menu to select the publisher. From there, you can choose a Series/Title and a Unit/Chapter. Each sub-menu will populate with the appropriate information based on your previous selection Here’s an example using McGraw-Hill’s Everyday Mathematics: Tabula Digita © 2009 V2.0 Page 4 of 9 DimensionM Math Curriculum Alignments Use this field to narrow your results to only include lessons matching a specific keyword. The search will return only results with an exact match for the word or phrase that you enter. For example, entering “multiply” will return standards including the words multiply and multiplying but not the word multiplication. Similarly with phrases, only exact matches will be returned. HINT: For tips on using our keyword search, see page 3. Use these drop-down menus to select a Game. The numbered boxes highlighted below are explained on the following page. Tabula Digita © 2009 V2.0 Page 8 of 9 DimensionM Math Curriculum Alignments Elements Displayed in Search Results 1. ‘Start New Search’ Link This will return you to the Curriculum Alignments Home Page to start your search from scratch. 2. ‘Revise Search’ Link This will return you to the last search page you were on, with all your search selections intact. 3. ‘Print Version’ Link This will open a new browser window to display your search results in a clean, print-ready format which you can print directly from within your browser. You can also save the print-ready results as a single, self-contained HTML file so you can print or review them at a later time. 4. List of Search Parameters This recaps all the selections you made for this particular search. 5. Number of Results Returned This displays the number of State Standards or Textbook Units/Chapters included in the search, though there may be more than one DimensionM Skill listed for each result. If there are more than 20 results, a link will appear to allow you to scroll forward and backward through the available results, with 20 results displayed per page. 6. Expand/Collapse Text Button Click on the plus (+) symbol to expand the text and see the all descriptive levels in the language of a particular State Standard or Textbook Unit/Chapter. Click on the minus (–) symbol to collapse back to the abridged version, which makes it easier to view multiple results. 7. Reference Text – From State Standards or Textbook Unit/Chapter The text displayed here is taken directly from the source documents in question, whether State Standards or a Textbook. If your search includes more than one particular set of State Standards, the results will be grouped by each set of standards. The same is true for a search which includes more than one specific Textbook. 8. List of Aligned DimensionM Math Skills The text displayed here matches the information as it is displayed in each Game. The DimensionM Math Skills are ordered so that the most relevant skills are shown at the top of the list. Each DimensionM Math Skill was assigned a weighted relevance ranking during the alignment process. If your search includes more than one DimensionM Game (e.g., DimensionM Multiplayer and Evolver Single Player), the results will be sorted by the relevance of the skill alignment rather than by Game. If there are more than five DimensionM Math Skills aligned to a given Skill or Unit/Lesson, you can click on the plus (+) symbol next to “Display [X] more resources” to show them all.
