South Island Secondary Schools (SISS) Junior Netball Development Tournament The SISS Junior Netball Development Tournament was held in Christchurch on the 6th to the 8th of July. This tournament was established 18 years ago and has always been played here in Christchurch down at the Hagley courts. It has become an important pathway for players and umpires to develop and improve their skills and abilities. Once again the weather was cold creating some difficult playing conditions. We would like to congratulate our Year 9A and Year 10A teams who both played very well against some very tough competition in some tough climatic conditions! The 10A’s were up against it from the beginning and did very well after being placed in a very tough pool. They worked very hard and were unlucky not to make quarter finals. To illustrate how close the competition was - losing by 3 points to Marian College in their 4th game, meant that they could not qualify for the top 8. The girls should be very proud of their efforts, coming 10th out of 32 teams. A huge congratulations goes out to Maggie McInnes who was identified as one of 10 Talented Players in the tournament. The 9A team had some very close matches and were unlucky not to make the top 16 of the pool play. The second day of competition saw them come away with two very strong wins and a loss. They were placed 23rd out of 32 teams which was pleasing and they should be proud of their efforts. We would also like to thank our two representative umpires who assisted both teams over the 3 days. A big thank you goes out to Jenna Fellowes and Isaac Wilson-McKeowen, without their support we would not have been able to enter these teams into the competition. Senior A Team The Senior A team had an excellent start to the season, winning the majority of their games in the first round. Round 2 was not as successful with tough competition and some tight scores. As they head into the Championship round, all the teams are very close and it’s very much up in the air as to who will qualify for the quarter finals. Good luck girls! The SuperNet Wednesday competition has also been very successful and as we head towards the end of the round the girls have already confirmed their spot in the semi-finals which is an awesome result! This will be played on Wednesday the 12th of August. Keep an eye on the Cashmere High School Facebook page for times and venues if you are keen to support the girls. https://www.facebook.com/CHSNetballClub In five weeks the Senior A girls will head down to Timaru to compete in the South Island Secondary Schools National Competition. The tournament will run from the 31st of August to the 3rd of September. If you are keen to follow their progress, information will be uploaded to the following website http://www.sissnetball.co.nz/ . We wish them all the best! Hoodies and T-Shirts The school has authorised a school hoodie and t-shirt that students can purchase to wear as part of the sports uniform. These garments are NOT compulsory for any Netball team but girls are able to purchase them to wear for trainings and warm ups. Please head to the school website or follow this link for more information http://www.cashmere.school.nz/files/sport/Teesandhoodies.pdf Dresses The girls do look wonderful in their dresses and it is great to see them play with pride in their school colours. Unfortunately we have had issues with the Velcro on some bibs and dresses and we have made every attempt to rectify this problem this season. We would like to thank Mrs Lum for spending hours behind the sewing machine! It is not too late for your daughter to bring her dress in to be fixed or alternatively she can collect some Velcro if you would prefer to do it yourself. Please see Mrs Lum in the H Block office. For any girl who has out grown her dress or is not playing next season and is keen to sell their dress, we definitely want encourage a second hand market. Dresses can be sold through the second hand uniform shop here at school. Please follow this link - http://www.cashmere.school.nz/our-school/uniform.html for instructions on how you can do that. Alternatively you can sell them privately or online through Trade me etc. Attendance at Trainings / Games As we head towards the end of the season some teams have lost players through injury, illness or moving schools, therefore it is vital that all team members communicate with their coach if they are not going to able to make it to a training or game. The latest that a team can default a Saturday game is by noon on the Friday before the game. Any time after this will incur a $150 fine (this is set by the Christchurch Netball Centre). The team or individuals involved may be responsible for paying this fine if they have not given sufficient warning to the coach or have a valid reason for missing the game. If your daughter cannot make a game on Saturday, it is vital they let their coaches know with plenty of time. This also includes Wednesday games, if you know your daughter will not be at school on a Wednesday please ensure your daughter contacts her coach before lunch time to ensure we have enough time to find another player or default the game. Coaches A HUGE thank you to all the coaches who have selflessly given up their time and energy to help develop the skills of their players. Coaching can be a difficult job at times and we have really appreciated your commitment to your team and our club. We wish you all the best for the final weeks of competition. Umpires As a club, we would not survive without the students who volunteer their time to umpire on a Saturday. Every club is responsible for supplying an umpire for each Year 9 game. I would just like to say a BIG thank you to Jenna Fellowes, Sophie Johnston, Bailey Johnston, Megan Snell, Maggie McInnes, Sophie Bickers, Danielle Peterson, Abi Anderson and Teille Gaines. These girls have stepped up to umpire on a regular basis. Umpiring can be quite a daunting experience but each of these girls have handled all games with confidence and professionalism. Well Done! If your daughter is keen to learn how to be an umpire please email Kellie Lightfoot, our sports coordinator ([email protected]) . We are keen to establish an Umpiring Club within the school. Here the girls will be taught the rules and supported in their roles. This is a great opportunity for both players and nonplayers. I would like to wish all teams the best of luck as they head towards qualifying for finals but more importantly I hope they enjoy the last games of the season! If you have any questions or queries please do not hesitate to contact me on (03) 3329129 ext. 781 or email me at [email protected]. Kind Regards, Willemyn Newton TIC Netball Cashmere High School
