Conditions
 All assessment activities must be conducted in English, which must
not be the student’s first language.
 Understanding may be demonstrated by oral or written response.
 Written responses need not be grammatically correct, or in sentence
form, but errors must not interfere with meaning.
 A bilingual and/or English dictionary but not an electronic translator
may be used.
 Assistance may be given to understand the requirements of the task.
Learning context
Assessment should follow class activities in which the students have had
the opportunity to become familiar with the topic and vocabulary through a
range of listening, speaking and writing activities. The question types should
also be familiar to the students and this can be achieved by including similar
question types in the formative work. The English Language Intensive
Programme (ELIP) Stage 2, has suggested teaching components,
strategies, language features and sample texts on evaporation (6c); ‘How to
use a Calculator’(6d); ‘Growing a Bean Seed’ (12d); ‘How to Recycle
Aluminium Cans’ (21c); ‘To make a Model of a Cell’ (21d)
Note, in this standard it is important that instructions contain an imperative
verb form and for some of them to include more than one clause.
Notes for Assessors
 It is important to be aware of the special notes of the unit standard.
 Each of the two texts should be assessed at a different time as part
of a wider area of study.
 Students should not have seen the text before the assessment
activity.
 Refer to your school’s policies before offering further assessment
opportunities.
 If resubmission takes place, the assessor should ensure that the
correct answers are not inadvertently indicated prior to the
resubmission opportunity.
 It is important that students can carry out the instructions
independently. Assessors need to ensure that students cannot
observe and copy the actions of other students.

How to Attend Mass
Introduction
At Sacred Heart College, Mass is held in the Chapel every Thursday at
lunchtime. It is not compulsory but we are a Christian Catholic school and
students and staff are strongly encouraged to attend. The Mass is the most
important sacramental celebration of the Church and is part of your education
at this school. It always follows a set order.
Rituals Entering the Church
As you enter the Chapel for Thursday Mass you will see the font on the left
near the front door. Students dip their hands in Holy Water and make the Sign
of the Cross. This is a sign of respect and to show we remember Jesus died
on the Cross. You then take your place on a pew. We can see the altar with
the candles and chalice ready for Mass. The Priest wears his colourful robes
and stands at the front of the church.
Special Items in the Church: Match
words with correct picture
 the altar
 the lectern
 the Priest’s chair
 the crucifix
 the chalice
 the altar breads
 the candles
 the chasuble or Priest’s robes
The Structure of the Mass
Beginning
First we are welcomed to the Church and the Priest says the special prayer
for the day.
Then the Mass has two main parts:
4
Part 1 - The Liturgy of the Word is the part of the service when we listen to
words from the Bible which is on the lectern. There is a first reading usually
from the Old Testament and sometimes a second reading taken from a letter
written by one of the apostles or followers of Jesus. Father Stephen sits on
the right side of the altar in the Priest’s Chair while the chapel prefects read to
us. In some parts of the service we are required to join in, which can
sometimes be difficult if you are new to the school. Students should try to be
mindful of what is happening and follow the actions of others, in order to be
respectful to the manners and traditions in the Chapel.
The Priest will also talk to students about the meaning of the readings or tell a
story to help explain their meaning. This is called the homily and it is a time to
listen quietly and to think about how we can improve our own lives.
The Liturgy of the Word ends with a prayer when we pray as a community for
all of God’s world.
Part 2 - The Liturgy of the Eucharist is the second main part of the service.
The priest starts by lifting up the chalice and says a special prayer over the
bread and wine, starting with the words “Holy, holy, holy…” We hear how the
Eucharist came to be through Jesus’ actions at The Last Supper.
Catholics believe it is through the Priest saying these words that the bread
and wine is changed into Jesus’ Body and Blood.
Next we say the Our Father prayer before praying for peace for the world and
each other. We then turn to people around us and shake hands to share the
Sign of Peace.
During Holy Communion students stand and line up in front of the Priest, or
Chapel prefects, to receive the Body and Blood of Christ through the symbols
of bread and wine. If you are a non-Catholic you can still participate by lining
up to receive a blessing.
After receiving Communion we sit quietly to pray and give thanks silently.
We can also see important items around the chapel like the crucifix and The
Stations of the Cross which help to remind us that Jesus died on the cross for
all people.
Ending
At the end of the Mass, the Priest blesses us and asks us to “go in peace and
serve God”. We are sent out into the school and the world to do our best in
our daily lives.
