2015/16 Auroras Campaign – Adelaide, Australia
The Auroras campaign for the Asian Championships 2016 to be held in Adelaide, Australia (29-30 of
March) will be divided into six stages:
Stage 1: EOI and Fitness benchmarking in States and Territories
EOI to be submitted via Jotform: http://form.jotform.co/form/52577873831871 by 4th of October
2015.
Before you make the decision to apply for the team please talk to your club and coach. At this stage
the Asian Championships is planned (29th-30th of March) to be run immediately after the Australian
Championships and just before CCWC. Preparation for Asian Champs may affect your club preparation
for Australian Championships and World Club Championships.
Note: Dates for Asian Championships are not confirmed at this time. As soon as I have more
information I will advise you immediately.
Fitness benchmarking for the Auroras squad will be coordinated and conducted by appointed fitness
benchmarking assessors from your state. Based on the results of the fitness benchmarking 50 paddlers
in each gender will be invited to attend selection camp.
The fitness exercises and benchmarks will remain the same as those used in the last World Nations
campaign. Full descriptions (including a video link showing all exercises) will be immediately provided to
all States and clubs. Tests should be conducted in the LAST week of October (between 25-31 of
October). Paddlers are advised to practice the benchmarking exercises prior to the testing, and seek
professional assistance from a qualified personal trainer if required. $10 admin fee to be paid by every
athlete attempted benchmarking. If anyone has any questions regarding the benchmarking exercises,
they are encouraged to discuss this with me directly.

The squads for the initial selection camp will be announced on November 4th.
Stage 2: Selection camp
Final selections for the Australian team shall be conducted on 21-22 of November at the 2 day selection
camp. It is anticipated that the camp will be conducted in the ACT, NSW or Victoria (following
consultation with the relevant State bodies). Maximum of 34 male and 30 female paddlers will be
selected. Selection shall be made by using results from a range of areas:

Fitness benchmark results;
Single craft time trials conducted in modified TK1’s over both 200m and 800m;
Paddling technique and ability to modify technique and blend with a crew;
Team attitude and ability to operate within the team structure and support other team
members.

In addition to paddler selection, the initial selection camp shall be used to select a maximum of three
drummers and three sweeps in accordance with the following criteria:
Drummers – weight, ability to work with the sweeps and the crew, balance, confidence on the
drummer’s seat (which will include the ability to swim) and the ability to control the boat if required.
Drummers must be able to act as a team player and be able to gain the respect of the crew.
Sweeps – ability to steer the boat and control the crew in different weather and water conditions, the
ability to maintain control of the crew under pressure, confidence and knowledge of calls and tactics for
different race distances, ability to make and hold weight and the ability to act as a team player and gain
the respect of the crew.
$100 admin fee to be paid by every athlete attending camp.
Following the initial selection camp successful applicants will spend the remainder of the domestic
season training and racing with their clubs. Additional weekly single craft trainings will be compulsory
for all selected Auroras.
Stage 3: First training camp
The first training camp will take place over a four day period in Melbourne, Sydney or Canberra. The goal
of this camp is to give the team technique and team bonding. The dates are 7th 8th 9th 10th of January
2016, specific location and detailed camp plan will be provided closer to the date.
Stage 4: Second training camp
The Second training camp will also be conducted over four days: 23-26th of January 2016. This camp will
focus on the team technique adjustment and reinforcement, team bonding and preliminary racing
performance knowledge.
Stage 5: Pre-race camp/racing
March 2016 - dates and location to be confirmed. The goals for this camp are: boat set up and
adjustments, racing experience and tactical calls practice.
Stage 5: Asian Championships
29-30 of March – to be confirmed.
In addition attendance/racing at an Asian regatta is planned for the team to allow further exposure to
international competition experience, and develop strong team performance and bonding. Regatta
dates are TBC, however, it is anticipated this will occur in May/June 2016.
