Mastering Maths - Unit 1, Topic 3: Teaching Notes

Unit 1: Exploring Number to 10: Topic 3: Representing and using number bonds
Learning intentions: Splitting a total number into two parts; Finding different ways of splitting a total
number into two parts; Identifying number bonds by counting; Memorising or mentally calculating
number bonds to 10; Finding all possible number bonds to a total number
The activities below can be used in sequence or drawn upon to suit the requirements of your class. Each
activity is supported by a document pack - a single, multipage document with full guidance and any
materials required. The title of this document is shown in blue. Some activities include an interactive
resource but the intention is always to provide a range of learning styles and opportunities.

Finding different ways of splitting a total number
into two parts
Number Bond Explorer (Teacher-led)
o
A whole class activity to explore making number bonds, beginning with an interactive to
enable children to visualise the splitting of a number of cubes into two parts.
o
Learning can be supported by giving each child a tower of cubes for them to handle and split
into parts.
o
This can be repeated with other numbers as necessary, using the interactive to guide
learning.
Finding different ways of splitting a total number
into two parts
Number Bond Mats (Challenge)
o
This activity follows on well from the interactive in Number Bond Explorer. Ask children to
work individually or in pairs to find different ways of making total numbers.
o
Use the resource documents to act as mats for different children to work on different number
bonds.
Finding different ways of splitting a total
number into two parts
o
Number Bond Investigations (Challenge)
Using blank Number Bond Sheets from the generic resource bank and cubes or counters,
children aim to find all possibilities to make a target number.
o
Children should be encouraged to discuss their strategies and how they tried to make sure
they had found all possibilities.
Unit 1: Exploring Number to 10: Topic 3: Representing and using number bonds
visualising
Splitting a total number into two parts
o
Rabbit Warren Splits (Teacher-led)
Use the interactive to model different ways to split a number of rabbits. Children can discuss
strategies and answers. There are ten random questions.
o
A paper based version is also suggested, where children use rabbit number cards and
bunny counters to make different ways of organising the number of rabbits into two warrens.
Finding different ways of splitting a total
number into two parts
o
Number Bonds to 4-10 (Worksheet)
Children use what they have learnt previously to explore different ways of making a total
number, using cubes to support understanding and record numerals.
Finding different ways of splitting a total
number into two parts
o
Rabbit Warren Splits Tool (Challenge)
Using this interactive teaching tool, teachers can demonstrate how a total number can be
split into two parts and how the two parts bond to make the total number.
o
The teacher can guide children to explore using different arrangements of bunnies into two
warrens to make the same total number, supporting them in developing an understanding of
the conservation of number.
o
The tool selects a different total number each time the screen is refreshed.
Identifying number bonds by counting
o
Number Bond Dice (Game)
A board game for 2 players. Players take turns to roll two dice and aim to make the totals on
the board, by counting the dots and writing numbers in the corresponding boxes. If the total
exceeds that on the board or if the total has already been made, they miss a go.
Unit 1: Exploring Number to 10: Topic 3: Representing and using number bonds
applying
Memorising or mentally calculating number
bonds to 10
o
Bunny Hop Number Bonds (Teacher-led)
Children are shown a target total number in the interactive and must choose numbers to
form a bond to make the total number.
o
This activity provides the opportunity for partner work and the development of memorising
and mental strategies to identify number bonds.
Memorising or mentally calculating number bonds
to 10
o
Missing Bonds (Worksheet)
In this activity, children use their knowledge and understanding of number bonds to identify
missing numbers in number bond models. It encourages them to manipulate number bonds
and totals.
o
Children are encouraged to discuss strategies.
Memorising or mentally calculating number bonds
to 10
o
Number Bond Cups (Game)
A game where children should apply their knowledge of number bonds to visualise a hidden
number of cubes to make a total number.
o
Children can be encouraged to discuss and share strategies to build their understanding.
Memorising or mentally calculating number
bonds to 10
o
Bang the Drum Bonds (Active Game)
A target total number is decided upon. The teacher bangs the drum a number of beats and
the children respond with the corresponding number to make the target number.
o
Children may respond with claps, jumps, beats etc.
Memorising or mentally calculating number bonds
to 10
o
Bunny Pairs (Challenge)
An interactive game. Children should select one bunny from the top row and one from the
bottom to form a bond to make the total number shown at the top of the screen.
o
Alternative bonds to target totals can be explored.
Unit 1: Exploring Number to 10: Topic 3: Representing and using number bonds
Finding all possible number bonds to a total
number
o
Number Bond Combinations (Challenge)
In this interactive game children select a total number. They then explore all possible
number bonds to make that total number.
o
A printable overview may acts as evidence of approaches to finding all possibilities.
Memorising or mentally calculating number bonds
to 10
o
Rotate to 10 (Challenge)
This interactive game allows children who have mastered number bonds to 10 to apply their
knowledge to solve a puzzle.
o
Sections of the puzzle should be rotated to the joining numbers make 10. Children should
explore different approaches and be able to explain their choices.
Memorising or mentally calculating
number bonds to 10
o
Number Bonds Hook Up (Active Game)
In this active game, each child has a bunny card with a number on and has to find their
partner which will give a total of 10.
o
This game can be varied to make totals of numbers less than 10.
