COACHING DRILL 001 – ‘Gladiators”
OBJECTIVE:
Improve passing & movement + FITNESS
PLAYERS:
8 per pitch
AREA:
20m x 15m
EQUIPMENT:
Cones, bibs x 4, balls x 1 (plus 2 spares in case the ball gets kicked away by the defender)
SET-UP:
Six players (X) stand around the pitch with two inside (A, B) opposing each other. The two players inside the grid try
to keep the ball from their opponent by shielding and using the outside players for a ‘give-and-go’. The outside players
cannot play the ball between themselves and must return it to the player that passed it to them. The game is
physically demanding and should have a time limit for each pair of 1-3 minutes. Rotate players in middle with players
on outside.

COACHING POINTS:
•
Communication from players both inside the pitch and outside.
•
Passing – inside of foot, outside of foot.
•
Movement – feign, check, throw defender off balance.
•
Shielding of the ball – body in between player and ball, keep ball moving.
•
Defender – get low, pressure attacker, keep body shape to see both attacker and ball.
PROGRESSIONS:
•
Players must execute a one-touch ‘give-and-go’ to score a goal.
•
Allocate the players in the grid as ‘attacker’ and ‘defender’, how many times can the defender touch
the ball?
•
Bib the players up into teams of 4, forcing the players in the middle to work harder and only play off
their own players on the outside.
•
Limit players on outside to one or two touch.
•
Limit players on inside to two or three touch – good for fitness work.
