THE GAMES
Four games below .500 for the first time under head coach Tracy Smith, Miami
University’s baseball team looks to rebound from its recent slide in a pair of nonconference contests this week.
On Tuseday, Miami hosts local-rival Cincinnati. The meeting marks the second
time in less than a week that the RedHawks and Bearcats will square off. Last
Wednesday, UC took a 16-6 decision from Miami in Cincinnati. The Bearcats sport a
18-13 record, 4-8 in Conference USA.
Wednesday, the RedHawks will battle Southeastern Conference-foe Kentucky at
Stanley G. McKie Field. The Wildcats enter the week at 14-20 and 3-12 in the SEC
and host in-state rival Louisville Tuesday before traveling to Oxford Wednesday.
MIAMI VERSUS CINCINNATI AND KENTUCKY
Miami has faced Cincinnati 137 times, the most of any RedHawk non-conference opponent. Despite losing four-of-six during head coach Tracy Smith’s tenure to
2
2001 REDHAWK BASEBALL GAME NOTES
the Bearcats, Miami holds a 80-56-1 all-time advantage versus Cincinnati. The
Bearcats captured the schools’ 137th meeting last Wednesday, pounding the
RedHawks 16-6 at Cincinnati.
In its 16 all-time meetings with Kentucky, Miami is 7-9. The RedHawks fell
to the Wildcats 9-3 March 7, 2000 in Lexington, Ky. and have lost both meetings with Kentucky under Coach Smith.
HEAD COACH TRACY SMITH
In his fifth year at Miami, Smith has reached the Mid-American Conference
Tournament finals three times, including capturing last year’s championship.
Smith, who was named the 2000 Ohio College Coach of the Year, has amassed a
147-121 (.549) career record and a Mid-American Conference regular-season
record of 72-56 (.563). He is only the fourth baseball coach in Miami’s history
to register 100 wins, which occurred last year with Miami’s 9-0 shutout of
Hartford on March 14, 2000.
During Smith’s era in Oxford, Miami players have been named to the allMAC First Team six times, including last year’s MAC Tournament MVP John
Lackaff. In addition, 10 student-athletes have been recognized as academic allMAC selections, including GTE Academic All-American Tom Yost. Clark Mace and
Chris Leonard both earned freshmen all-American status.
RECAPPING THE WEEKEND
Miami dropped three-of-four games to MAC West Division-leading Ball State,
falling four games below .500 for the first time under head coach Tracy Smith.
The RedHawks began the weekend on a good note, defeating Ball State 41. Chris Leonard (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) led Miami, pitching
the complete game to raise his MAC-leading record to 6-1. The southpaw struck
out eight while walking none and allowing only six hits in the victory.
However, Miami’s pitching was unable to keep the Cardinals at bay the rest
of the weekend, dropping the final three games of the series 12-7 in the
nightcap Friday and 6-3 and 22-6 Sunday in Muncie, Ind.
On Sunday, Ball State smashed 11 home runs in two games, including eight
in game two. Miami allowed a season-high 21 hits to go along with its seasonmost 22 runs allowed in Sunday’s nightcap.
Miami was led offensively by Jeremy Ison (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and
Jason Knoedler (Springfield, Ill./Springfield/Lincoln Land C.C.) who both
notched 8-for-14 efforts on the weekend. Ison added three doubles, two homers
and eight RBI to pace the RedHawk bats.
REDHAWKS RAKING IN MAC HONORS
For the second time this season and fourth of his short career, sophomore
pitcher Chris Leonard (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) has been named
Mid-American East Division Player of the Week. Leonard earned the kudos with
his performance in last Friday’s 4-1 win over Ball State. The southpaw pitched
the complete game, striking out eight and walking none, allowing only six hits.
Leonard joins Russ Bayer (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) (East
Division Pitcher of the Week March 19-25) and Jason Knoedler (Springfield,
Ill./Springfield/Lincoln Land C.C.) (East Division Player of the Week March
12-18) as RedHawks to be honored by the MAC in 2001.
DIALING LONG DISTANCE
Through 30 games this season, Miami has continued the trend it set in 2000 by
smashing home runs on a consistent basis. The RedHawks have sent 34 balls
out of the park in 2001, led by Justin Knoedler (Springfield, Ill./Springfield/Lincoln Land C.C.) and Jeremy Ison’s (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) teamhigh seven dingers each.
In 2000, the long ball played a major role in the RedHawks’ record-breaking
season as they belted 64 home runs. In Mid-American Conference play, the Red
and White smashed 42 homers, while giving up just 22.
FAST OUT OF THE GATES
In its last 27 games, Miami has scored at least one run in the first inning of
every game but 14. Interestingly, in seven of the 14 games that the RedHawks
did not notch a first-inning tally (March 2 at Evansville, March 14 vs. Portland,
March 17 vs. Bucknell and March 21 vs. Xavier, March 24 at Austin Peay, March

27 at Xavier, April 6 vs. Ball State), Miami has posted victories, while sporting
a 6-7 record in the contests in which it has been on the scoreboard in the first.
In fact, Miami has outscored its opponents by a total of 137-107 in the
first five innings of games this year, while being outscored 105-63 after the
fifth (including extra innings).
The RedHawks did not notch a first-inning tally in any of its four games
with Ball State last weekend, and has now not scored in the first in five
straight games, its longest such streak of the season.
MAKING HISTORY
Two RedHawks are currently climbing the ladder toward several Miami all-time
career records.
Clark Mace (London, Ohio/Madison Plains) added another record to his
list of accomplishments when he set Miami’s all-time total bases mark on March
30 versus Western Michigan. His school-record total now stands at 395. Last
season, Mace broke the school’s career marks for hits and runs and continues to
add to the records with 190 career runs and 265 hits. He added Miami’s all-time
at-bat record this year, which now stands at 775. He also currently stands in
the top eight on Miami’s career lists for batting average (.342;t-7th), RBI
(147;2nd), stolen bases (64;4th), and doubles (40;3rd).
Jeremy Ison (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) currently stands tied for second in
Miami history with 33 home runs, needing only three more to become the most
prolific home run hitter in school history. He is also third in career RBI (141),
fourth in at-bats (675), tied for fifth in runs (134), fifth in total bases (327),
seventh in hits (200) and fifth in doubles (38).
LEONARD PICKS UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF
Sophomore pitcher Chris Leonard (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) has
shown the same form in 2001 that earned him freshman all-America status in
2000.
After a team-leading eight starts, Leonard leads Miami with a 6-1 record in
59.1 innings pitched and a 2.28 earned run average. His four complete games,
one shutout and 49 strikeouts also lead the squad.
Leonard also leads the Mid-American Conference in ERA, starts, wins,
innings pitched and shutouts. He was named MAC East Division Pitcher of the
Week for his performance March 2 at Evansville. In that game, Leonard collected his second-career shutout, striking out six and allowing only seven hits,
to beat the Aces 4-0.
The southpaw garnered his second MAC East Pithcer of the Week award this
past week for his performance last Friday in a 4-1 win over Ball State. In the
complete-game victory, Leonard struck out eight while walking none and
allowing just six hits.
Leonard outdueled Ball State hurler Bryan Bullington, who ranks second in
the MAC with a 2.76 ERA, to collect the win.
FOR STARTERS...
Chris Leonard has not been the only Miami starting pitcher that has turned in
solid performances for the RedHawks this season. For the year, Miami starters
sport a 4.29 ERA while holding opposing batters to a .263 batting average.
Three of Miami’s four regular starters (Leonard, Judd Richardson (Caledon,
Ont./Country Day), and Billy Kieninger (Xenia, Ohio/Xenia)) are among
the top 11 in the MAC in earned run average.
However, Miami has run into trouble closing games this year. The RedHawk
bullpen has an ERA of 9.00, with the opposition hitting at a .313 clip. Additionally, Miami has lost seven games this season in its opponents’ last at-bat,
including five in a row from March 11 through March 20.
TWINS AIM TO TOWER OVER MAC
In their first season in the Red and White, RedHawk twins Jason and Justin
Knoedler (Springfield, Ill./Springfield/Lincoln Land C.C.) have shown the
skills that led them to all-America careers at Lincoln Land Community College.
Jason, the RedHawks regular right fielder, leads Miami with a blazing .448
batting average. He also leads the squad in runs (42), hits (56), doubles (9),
total bases (81), stolen bases (14), slugging pct. (.648) and on-base percentage
(.510).
4
2001 REDHAWK BASEBALL GAME NOTES
Jason also leads the MAC in batting average, while ranking in the top five
in hits (t-1st), runs (2nd), total bases (3rd) and on-base percentage (3rd).
Additionally, Jason’s .448 average is on pace to shatter Miami’s singleseason record of .429, held by current-Cincinnati Red Chris Sexton.
At the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic in Fresno, Calif., Jason earned allTournament honors after batting .458 in the Classic with 11 runs scored, five
RBI and four stolen bases. The effort also landed Jason MAC East Division
Player of the Week honors.
Last year at Lincoln Land, Jason batted .422, led the nation in stolen bases
with 54 and was named NJCAA all-American.
Justin, Miami’s starting catcher, is tied for the team lead with seven home
runs, while ranking fourth with 22 RBI. However, Justin has begun to break
out of an early season slump in his past 15 games. In those 15 contests, Justin
has batted .396 (19-for-48) with 15 runs, 15 RBI, four doubles and six homers.
The streak began on March 17 versus Bucknell, when Justin enjoyed his finest
day as a RedHawk, going 4-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored. In all,
the Knoedler brothers combined for seven of Miami's 12 RBI, six of the
RedHawks' 11 hits and scored five-of-14 Miami runs in the 14-2 rout of the
Bison.
At Lincoln Land, Justin was named the 2000 NJCAA National Player of the
Year after joining forces with his brother to lead the school to the NJCAA
Division II national championship.
WHERE HAS ALL THE DEFENSE GONE?
In 2000, Miami’s first Mid-American Conference Tournament championship
since 1983 could be attributed to its limited amount of miscues in the field.
Unfortunately for the RedHawks, 2001 has not been so kind defensively.
The error bug bit the RedHawks badly again on March 31 as Miami committed a season-high eight errors in a 10-7 loss to Western Michigan. Seven
different RedHawks contributed to the defensive collapse by recording a
miscue.
For the season, Miami has committed 66 errors in just 30 games (2.2/
game). In comparison, the RedHawks committed only 89 errors in 63 games in
2000 (1.4/game).
AND THE WINNER IS...
Following its first Mid-American Conference Tournament championship and
NCAA Tournament berth since 1983, Miami University’s baseball team is favored
to win the Mid-American Conference East Division for the second-consecutive
year, announced Feb. 9 by the conference office. The RedHawks are picked
second to win the tournament crown behind Ball State, which is tabbed to win
the West Division.
Coming off a memorable 40-23 campaign, Miami is tagged to win the East
Division by the slimmest of margins. The RedHawks, who were favored by one
point a year ago over Bowling Green, are again picked first by one point, this
time over Kent State. Miami, which garnered five first-place votes, received 79
points, compared to KSU’s 78 points and Ohio’s 76 points.
