Creative Writing
We can make it good
superb!
PowerPoint Presentation created by Carrie Harris – Cheat Lake Middle Teacher
Where do we start?
How about the Introduction!
• Make it exciting
• Use variety
• Make your audience want to keep
reading!
• Think of a new twist on your topic
What do you mean?
“My favorite sport is football. I am
going to tell you why football is my
favorite sport. It is fun. I go to
games with all of my friends. You
should go to a football game. It can
be a lot of fun. If you want to know
why you should go to a football game,
keep reading.”
How about…
“A spirited band, rowdy fans, and determined
players are just a few examples of why football is
the most exhilarating sport to watch. As people
sit in the stands waiting with anticipation, the
marching band runs onto the field getting
everyone thrilled for the game to begin. This
excitement continues, while the fans start
chanting a cheer and doing the wave around the
packed stadium. All of this stimulation makes
adrenaline pump through the veins of the football
team. They are now more determined than ever
not to let their fans down!”
How do you achieve that?
Try NOT to use phrases like:
“I’m going to tell you about…”
In this essay, you will be reading
about…”
If you want to learn more, keep
reading.”
Avoid Choppy Sentences
I like dogs. Dogs are fun. They can be
big. They can be small. They can be
all sizes. If you want to learn more
about dogs, keep reading.
Intro. Accomplished…Now
What?
All of the paragraphs in between!!
Make sure you include
DETAIL!
DETAIL!
DETAIL!
Include What?
“Football is the best sport ever
invented. I like football. It can be a
lot of fun and it can be a lot of work.
But it is worth it. I get to play with
my friends.
Ohhh, I See…
“Who would have thought long hours of
practice in extreme heat, being
tackled to the ground, and running up
and down a field could be fun?
Football is one of the best sports
ever invented because you have the
ability to release all of your pent up
energy and enhance skills such as
passing, tackling, and running.”
How Do I End This Thing?
• Think about what you wrote in your
essay.
• In different words, remind your
readers what they just read.
Creative Conclusions!
“As fans lose their voices and the band
has blown their last breath of air, this
amazing sport comes to an end. The team
of players run off the field with heads
held high and full of pride. They have not
and will never let their fans down. Winning
the game is on everyone’s mind, but it may
not always happen. Simply sharing in the
excitement can be enough to fulfill
dreams.”
What Else Should I Do?
Try avoiding empty expressions:
I think that
The reason is that
The thing that
What I mean is
As a matter of fact
Mix It Up!
• Try switching around your sentences.
The girl ate the soft cookie quickly.
Quickly, the girl ate the soft cookie.
It’s your turn!
Try improving this paragraph on your
own sheet of paper…
“In my report, I will be telling you
about school. School can be hard.
School can also be fun. Sometimes
your locker gets jammed. Sometimes
you can get a lot of homework. You
can meet a lot of new people and
have fun with friends too. If you
want to know more about school,
keep reading.”
