Chelmsford CC Press Release – Tuesday 28th July
Walloped by the Willows
In only their second season, the newly established girls section of Chelmsford Cricket Club have
been crowned London and South East regional champions! Their second trophy of 2015.
The “Willows” as they are affectionately known qualified for the regional finals of the Under 11 Lady
Taverners soft-ball competition after winning the Essex tournament earlier this summer. Despite a
close final game against Hutton CC the Willows were unbeaten throughout the day and went into
the regional tournament, held at Wisbech CC on Monday 27th July, with high expectations.
With three counties unable to field teams, the Willows were faced with just two opponents from
Bedfordshire (Luton Town & Indians CC) and Hertfordshire (Harpenden CC). The first match pitted
Chelmsford against Harpenden, and despite an early start to the day for the girls they were quickly
into their stride.
Chelmsford won the toss and opted to take to the field, some excellent early bowling from Mel
Welch and Eleanor Stevens, combined with athletic fielding from Isabella Copeland and Jess Tuff
put Harpenden on the defensive from the outset and restricted them to a score of 240 runs (in
terrier cricket you start at 200 but lose runs for every wicket). The Willows then went into bat
knowing 41 runs was required from their 12 overs for victory; the situation was helped with some
excellent batting from Zoe Good and Mel Welch who made considerable in-roads into the total from
their 3 overs. By the time the final pairing of Darcie Cleaver and Beth Wright took to the crease the
game was done and dusted, with Chelmsford finishing clear victors with 282 runs.
The second game of the day saw Harpenden defeat Luton Town & Indians, meaning a draw was all
that was needed for victory, but the girls wanted to finish the tournament in style, and they certainly
did that. This time batting first Chelmsford raced to 300 with the loss of only two wickets, some
excellent batting from Olivia Copeland and Eleanor Stevens the highlight of the innings.
Despite playing some nice strokes the fearsome Willows bowling attack and fielding were too much
for Luton Town & Indians, and with Zoe Good taking three wickets in one of her overs, the
opponents could only manage a net score of 202 from their 12 overs, meaning a convincing 98 run
victory for the Willows.
Girls section manager, Adrian Tuff, said “we didn’t really know what to expect in terms of the likely
quality of the opposition; we were put through a serious test in the Essex competition and weren’t
really expecting to win so convincingly. The girls put in two fantastic performances and there wasn’t
anyone who didn’t contribute either with the bat, the ball or in the field, even in the last game the
girls were sliding around the outfield to save runs despite leading by 70 runs at the time! It’s a
fantastic achievement for the girls, to be crowned Essex and then regional champions in only our
second year. It is also a tremendous advert for girl’s cricket in Essex, we have had a lot of support
from Essex Cricket, especially Women and Girls Officer Natalie Samaranayake, and when you
compare across other local counties, the Essex teams are extremely strong.”
If you are interested in joining the thriving and successful Chelmsford CC Willows then training is at
Chelmer Park (CM2 8RL) on Friday nights from 6.30pm to 8pm. More details can be requested from
