ICF Premises Student Interactive Game. Example: Human Functioning NOT merely disability Aim of the task: To improve students awareness of the premises of the ICF, and avoid misconceptions of the ICF. Number of Students: 24 Preparation: Print out the handout sheets. Cut them along the black lines. However keep them together in their groups. Group 1 includes the following words; universal model, integrative model, interactive model, parity, minority model, medical or social, linear progressive, etiological causality. Group 2 include the following words; context inclusive, cultural applicability, operational, life span coverage, person alone, western concepts, theory-driven, adult-focused. Activity: Divide the group into small groups, typically in pairs. Hand out group 1 to one group, and group 2 to another group and continue the distribution until all pairs have 8 pieces of paper. Tell the groups that they need to sort the 8 pieces of paper into pairs, with one word explaining what the ICF is and one word explaining what the ICF is not. Demonstrate this with the two words; Human Functioning, and Disability. Ask the class if the premise of the ICF is human functioning or disability. Then make a sentence from it. The solution to this example is “Human Functioning not merely Disability”. Allow 5 minutes for the students to complete their task. After this time, ask a pair that worked with group 1 words, to team up with a pair with group 2 words. Share the sentences with each other. Ask them if they agree with them. Allow 5 minutes to discuss this too. Discussions: Discuss the importance of understanding the premises of the ICF in terms of understanding disability models. Share common misconceptions Solution: Universal Model not Integrative Model not Interactive Model not Parity not Context inclusive not Cultural Applicability not Operational not Life Span Coverage not a Minority model merely Medical or Social Linear Progressive Etiological Causality Person alone Western Concepts Theory-driven alone Adult-focused alone Acknowledgement: Thanks to Judith Hollenweger for providing the words used for the premises of ICF. https://vimeo.com/122754174 http://www.inclusive-education.org/basic-page/inclusiveeducation-booklets-and-webinars Kwok Ng 1 ICF Premises Student Interactive Game.
