Overview HPE Recovery Manager Central (RMC) software integrates HPE 3PAR StoreServ or HPE StoreVirtual primary storage with HPE StoreOnce backup systems to provide converged data protection that delivers assured recovery from application-consistent recovery points. NOTE: RMC supports the following two flavors of HPE StoreVirtual: HPE Hyper Converged 250 System and HPE StoreVirtual VSA. Backups to HPE StoreOnce are block-level copies of volumes, de-duplicated to save space. The backups can be used to restore back to the original or a different HPE 3PAR StoreServ array, even if the original base volume is lost. RMC enables you to replicate data from the source storage system to destination storage system, between HPE 3PAR StoreServ and HPE StoreVirtual platforms. The replication is based on point-in-time Snapshots. Features Easy and intuitive installation and deployment Preconfigured, ready to use appliance with simple installation wizard. Snapshots management You can create instant and rapid snapshots. Data protection with snapshots is faster when compared to other backup solutions. Remote snapshots A consistent copy of the data is readily available at the remote site. Efficient and fast backups The Express Protect feature enables a direct backup from HPE 3PAR StoreServ to HPE StoreOnce. Fast and efficient backups are created as RMC reads only the changed data during the backup. Data replication between Storage Systems RMC supports bidirectional replication between the Storage Systems, HPE 3PAR StoreServ, and HPE StoreVirtual. Element Recovery Technology The Element Recovery Technology provides instant access to the backups and granular restores. Extra tier of data protection Catalyst Copies allow you to efficiently replicate backups to multiple HPE StoreOnce Catalyst stores (local or remote). Application plug-ins RMC offers application integration through plug-ins and supports application-consistent data protection for Oracle database, Microsoft SQL server, and VMware vSphere. Simple management Intuitive, web-based GUI to configure and manage RMC. REST APIs for easy integration 8 Overview REST APIs are available for all the features of RMC. Use the APIs to create custom automation of RMC features and for integration with other data protection solutions. Application plug-ins • HPE Recovery Manager Central for VMware (RMC-V) allows VMware administrators to create application consistent snapshots and initiate rapid online recovery of VMs from the VMware vCenter Server virtualization management console. With the RMC Express Protect feature, you can back up and restore VM snapshots using HPE StoreOnce. • • • Element Recovery Technology (ERT) enables recovery of an individual VM or files within a VM from an Express Protect backup on StoreOnce. For example, you can set the quota when you internally charge customers per TB of user data protected. NOTE: • • If you use Physical Data Size Quota or Logical Data Size Quota feature in conjunction with Client-Permissions to control client access to the store, you can effectively define how much space a particular user is allowed to store or use on the HPE StoreOnce Backup System. The features are useful when a number of users are using the same system and you want to control how much disk space is available to individual users . If quota limits are enabled and the quota limit is reached, backups fail to prevent the quota from exceeding. If capacity management is required, Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends configuring backup applications with quotas where applicable to reroute to another device or postponed backups to prevent backups from failing unexpectedly. 5. If the operation fails, optimized backup (only those blocks with data are copied) is attempted. If even the optimized backup operation fails, a full backup is performed. Optimized backups are faster than full backups. Full Backup: Performs a full backup. Perform if auto backup fails. NOTE: Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends you to select Auto as the backup type. Snapshot Set Type Select either of the following: • • Snapshot Set Snapshot Set Existing: Select an existing Snapshot Set New: Create a Snapshot Set. For more information, see Creating a Snapshot Set on page 54 Select a Snapshot Set. 3. Click Add. NOTE: • For a selected Recovery Set, an ancestor Snapshot Set and its corresponding Express Protect must be in the available state to perform an incremental backup. For example, In this case, incremental backup is performed for Snapshot 2, only if Snapshot1 and Backup1 are in the available state. • Incremental backup performance depends on the data change between the current Snapshot and the ancestor Snapshot. Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends the following points for incremental backups: • Frequently perform backups. 68 Configuring RMC resources • Retain the most recent Snapshot and its backup. For example, In this case, if Snapshot 2 or Backup 2 is not available, the data change will be calculated between Snapshot 3 and Snapshot 1. Hence the backup performance may be slower than the performance when the most recent snapshot and backup were available for comparison. Managing concurrent backups RMC appliance allows you to submit only as many jobs as the VM supports. You can reconfigure the vCPU and vRAM of the RMC appliance so that the concurrent backup jobs complete faster. The incremental backup requires 2x data sessions when compared to a full backup. NOTE: RMC does not allow multiple backups for a Recovery Set. For more information on how many snapshots or catalyst sessions can be performed concurrently, see the QuickSpecs document. For optimal backup performance: • • Plan and schedule your backup jobs to ensure that at any point in time the number of data streams, is as shown in the table. For each RMC appliance configuration, the number of data streams can be determined from the number of volumes that are backed up and the number of streams selected per volume. vCPU/vRAM 2/8 GB (default) 4/16 GB 8/32 GB 16/64 GB Maximum data streams permitted NA 64 128 256 Also, consider Maximum Concurrent Data and Inbound Copy Jobs of the HPE StoreOnce Backup system. This value is displayed in the HPE StoreOnce catalyst, in the Status and Settings tabs. If RMC is down and permanently unavailable, you can deploy a new RMC and restore the backed-up catalogs. Catalog protection is a scheduled export configuration. Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends you to schedule daily catalog protections. The Catalog Protection page provides the following options: • • Configuring Catalog —creates Catalog Protection. Restoring Catalog —restores the already protected Catalog. Catalog Protection features • • • • • • The RMC configuration can be protected by backing up the configuration data on to a shared location or HPE StoreOnce. This operation can be scheduled. RMC permits configuring protection against NAS share base location. Data can be written on all shared file protocols, such as NFS and CIFS. In a NAS share, all remote shares or directories must have read and write permissions and be mountable on Linux client. NFS-based mounts do not require credentials. In CIFS, the credentials are optional and must be verified if they are required for share access. Scheduler can be used in Catalog Protection for hourly, daily, weekly, monthly on Network Share and HPE StoreOnce Catalyst Store. Catalog Protection system firewall The RMC appliance has an HPE firewall running. Usually, CIFS servers are active on port 445 and NFS servers active on some predefined or default ports. Considering HPE StoreOnce NFS, HPE StoreOnce CIFS, and Windows CIFS server-based shares, HPE firewall permits outbound communication. Port configurations for NFS at the server side are done in /etc/sysconfig/nfs. The NFS server by default binds itself to dynamically picked ports. Generally, users can also configure NFS to run on dedicated ports. For more information, see table Port list classification. The appliance firewall permits outbound traffic for the following ports: 111, 445, 662, 875, 892, 2049, 12206, 12204, 12205, 12202, 12203, 2020, 32803, 32769 Port list classification Catalog Protection 79 Name Port HPE StoreOnce NFS server-specific ports 12206,12204,12205,12202,12203. In the preceding ports the NFS ports are mapped as: • • • • • • Default NFS server ports LOCKD_TCPPORT=12206 LOCKD_UDPPORT=12206 MOUNTD_PORT=12204 RQUOTAD_PORT=12205 STATD_PORT=12202 STATD_OUTGOING_PORT=12203 662, 875, 892,2020, 32803, 32769 The following are sample port configurations: • • • • • CIFS specific LOCKD_TCPPORT=32803 LOCKD_UDPPORT=32769 MOUNTD_PORT=892 RQUOTAD_PORT=875 STATD_PORT=662 STATD_OUTGOING_PORT=2020 445 Catalog Protection guidelines • • • • • A maximum of two configurations are permitted. Configuring protection for already protected RMC on the same shares are not permitted. Data is written to remote NAS shares after the local RMC system mounts them on local. Be sure that the remote share or catalyst server is reachable. Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends that the network location on NAS or HPE StoreOnce Catalyst Store is reachable within 30 seconds. Mounting and authenticating NAS shares: ◦ • • User credentials do not affect the protocols. The primary requirement for mounting NAS/NFS shares is that they must be reachable/mountable. ◦ The NFS-based protection is primarily focused on NFS shares that do not need credentials. Hence, the login credentials field does not appear in NFS shares. NFSv2 and NFSv3 permissions are oriented towards client systems and not to users. ◦ The NAS/CIFS shares may or may not have user credentials and associated users may or may not be part of the domain. ◦ For CIFS, the authentication supported method is NTLM. Media requiring clients to mount using Kerberos authentication is not supported. Remote CIFS shares mounting is tried against multiple mount security mode options, except for Kerberos (not supported) base security modes. On deletion of a configuration, the physical data on the remote shares or stores is not removed or deleted. Only the catalog configuration and associated schedule configuration is deleted in RMC. Only on successful verification, RMC allows installation of the certificates. General guidelines for using SSL certificates • • • Hewlett Packard recommends you to clear the browser cache after you apply a certificate on the server. This is because, at times, the Google Chrome browser does not clear or manage local cache, the browse cache may contain references to old certificates. When a new web certificate is applied on the appliance, the browser fails to fetch the new certificate and therefore the login fails. When uploading a certificate that you created offline, ensure that the .key file is not passphrase protected. If the browser does not identify the CA that issued the certificate, when viewing the certificate on the browser, the Certificate Invalid error is displayed. You can ignore this error message if the certificate is issued by a renowned CA. Editing a schedule 107 Understanding the security features and best practices of the RMC appliance This chapter explains the best practices for maintaining and securing the appliance. Securing the appliance The following factors secured (hardened) the appliance and its operating system: • Best practice operating system security guidelines were followed. The appliance operating system minimizes its vulnerability by running only the services required to provide the functionality. The appliance operating system enforces mandatory access controls internally. ◦ • • The appliance maintains a firewall that allows traffic on specific ports and blocks all unused ports. For more information, see Ports needed for RMC. ◦ Make sure that the key appliance services run only with the required privileges; they do not run as privileged users. The appliance is designed to operate entirely on an isolated management LAN. Access to the production LAN is not required. The default credentials for first-time login are: Table 8: Default credentials • • • • • • User name Admin Password admin The appliance enforces a password change at first login. The default password cannot be used again. The appliance supports self-signed certificates. All browser operations and REST API calls use HTTPS. All weak Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) ciphers are disabled. The appliance supports secure updating. HPE digitally signs all updates to ensure integrity and authenticity. Configuration exports are encrypted. If the administrator user password is lost or forgotten, contact your Hewlett Packard Enterprise support representative to obtain password for HPresetpassword account. Best practices for maintaining a secure appliance The following is a partial list of security best practices that Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends in both physical and virtual environments. Differing security policies and implementation practices make it difficult to provide a complete and definitive list. • Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends a strict separation of the management LAN and production LAN, using VLAN or firewall technology or both to maintain the separation: ◦ Management LAN All management processor devices (including Onboard Administrators and virtual connections through an Onboard Administrator, iLOs, and iPDUs) are connected to the management LAN. 108 Understanding the security features and best practices of the RMC appliance ◦ Grant management LAN access to authorized personnel only, such as Infrastructure administrators, Network administrators, and Server administrators. Production LAN All NICs for managed devices are on the production LAN. • • • The appliance is preconfigured so that the nonessential services are removed or disabled in the management environment. Ensure that a process is in place to determine if software and firmware updates are available, and to install updates for all components in your environment on a regular basis. Ensure that the security policies and processes address the virtual environment: ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ Educate administrators about changes to their roles and responsibilities in a virtual environment. Restrict access to the appliance GUI to authorized users. If you use an IDS (Intrusion Detection System) solution in your environment, ensure that the solution has visibility into network traffic in the virtual switch. To reduce the effect on VLAN traffic sniffing, turn off promiscuous mode in the hypervisor and encrypt the traffic over the VLAN. NOTE: Usually, if promiscuous mode is disabled in the hypervisor, it cannot be used on a Virtual Machine (VM) guest. The VM guest can enable promiscuous mode however, it will not be functional. ◦ • • Maintain a zone of trust, for example, a DMZ (demilitarized zone) that is separate from production machines. ◦ Ensure appropriate access controls on Fibre Channel devices. ◦ Use LUN masking on both storage and compute hosts. ◦ Ensure that LUNs are defined in the host configuration, instead of being discovered. ◦ Use hard zoning (which restricts communication across a fabric) based on port Worldwide Names (WWNs), if possible. ◦ Ensure that communication with the WWNs is enforced at the switch-port level. Clearly define and use administrative roles and responsibilities. For local accounts on the appliance, change the passwords periodically according to your password policies. Follow these guidelines: ◦ ◦ • • Limit the number of local accounts. Ensure that passwords include at least three of these types of characters: – Numeric character – Lowercase alphabetic character – Uppercase alphabetic character – Special character Do not connect management systems (for example, the appliance, the iLO card, and Onboard Administrator) directly to the Internet. If you require access to the Internet, use a corporate Virtual Private Network (VPN) that provides firewall protection. Appliance access over SSL All access to the appliance is through HTTPS (HTTP over SSL), which encrypts data over the network and ensures data integrity. Algorithms for securing the appliance • • • SSL, see table Supported SSL cipher suites SHA-256 for hashing local user account passwords Other passwords are encrypted using 128-bit Blowfish Appliance access over SSL 109 • Support dumps • ◦ Encryption: 128-bit AES. ◦ Hash: SHA-256. ◦ The AES key is encrypted separately using 2,048-bit RSA. Updates ◦ Not encrypted; digitally signed using SHA-256 and 2,048-bit RSA Table 9: Supported SSL cipher suites SSL cipher suite SSL version Kx Au Enc Mac ECDHE-RSA-AES256GCM-SHA384 TLSv1.2 EDI RSA AESGCM(256) AEAD ECDHE-ECDSA-AES256GCM-SHA384 TLSv1.2 ECDH ECDSA AESGCM(256) AEAD ECDHE-RSA-AES256SHA384 TLSv1.2 ECDH RSA AES(256) SHA384 ECDHE-ECDSA-AES256SHA384 TLSv1.2 ECDH ECDSA AES(256) SHA384 ECDHE-RSA-AES256-SHA SSLv3 ECDH RSA AES(256) SHA1 Ports needed for RMC RMC requires specific ports to be made available to communicate with the appliance and appliance to manage HPE storage devices. Understanding the security features and best practices of the RMC appliance 111 Configuring RMC for Remote Copy RMC supports remote Snapshot creation in different HPE 3PAR StoreServ replication modes. Before you perform a Remote Copy operation, ensure the following: • • • Remote Copy groups are started and all Virtual Volumes are in synced status. It is mandatory to configure first vNIC (80). Names of all virtual volumes in a synchronous Remote Copy group do not exceed 20 characters. Managing Remote Snapshots with RMC The following points help in registering and configuring Remote Copy groups: • • • • RMC configuration for managing Remote Recovery Sets Working with RMC for managing RC groups Snapshot creation and HPE 3PAR StoreServ replication modes Remote Recovery Set policy recommendations RMC configuration for managing Remote Recovery Sets The following points explain how to manage and configure Remote Recovery Sets: • • Remote Copy management by single RMC appliance Remote Copy management by RMC appliance at each site Remote Copy management by single RMC appliance A single RMC appliance manages both local and remote HPE 3PAR StoreServs. To complete the setup, register the same RMC appliance as the remote appliance. Figure 39: Remote Copy management by single RMC appliance Remote Copy management by RMC appliance at each site There is one RMC appliance at each site. Appliance 1 manages the local site and Appliance 2 manages the remote site. Register Appliance 2 as the remote appliance in Appliance 1 to complete the setup. Ensure that the RMC in local site and the RMC in remote site are accessible to each other. 112 Configuring RMC for Remote Copy Figure 40: Individual RMC appliance at each site Working with RMC for managing RC groups Step No. Action More notes and references 1 Registering a remote appliance Remote appliance registration helps you manage snapshots on remote array. During registration, the appliance is registered on both remote and local sites. You can register up to eight appliances and also register the same appliance as remote. Remote appliance registration is useful during disaster or failover situations. For more information on how to register a remote appliance, see Registering a remote appliance. 2 Registering Storage Systems to It is mandatory to add the primary and secondary Storage corresponding RMC appliances System to local and remote site to create a Remote Recovery Set. In the Remote Copy management by single RMC appliance, a single RMC appliance is used to register both the local and remote appliances. Register the same RMC appliance as the remote appliance. In the Individual RMC appliance at each site,There is one RMC appliance at each site. Appliance 1 manages the local site and Appliance 2 manages the remote site. Register Appliance 2 as the remote appliance in Appliance 1 to complete the setup. For more information on how to add an appliance to Storage System, see Adding a Storage System Table Continued Working with RMC for managing RC groups 113 Step No. Action More notes and references 3 Creating Remote Copy Recovery Set For more information on how to create a Recovery Set, see Recovery Sets. 4 Creating Remote Copy Snapshot Set For more information on how to create a Snapshot Set, see Snapshots Sets. Snapshot creation and HPE 3PAR StoreServ replication modes RMC supports Snapshot creation with Synchronous, Periodic Asynchronous, and Asynchronous replication modes of HPE 3PAR StoreServ. RMC also supports Snapshot creation with Synchronous Long Distance (SLD) configuration. Target Storage Source Storage Backup Systems Backup Systems Replication Sets Catalyst Copy Volumes Target Recovery Sets Source Recovery Sets Catalyst Stores Catalyst Stores Replication RMC Target Snapshot Sets Source Snapshot Sets Express Protect Figure 41: Synchronous Long-Distance configuration Remote Recovery Set policy recommendations RMC permits snapshot policies to be set based on the license availability on HPE 3PAR StoreServ. All policies are optional and are categorized into: • • • Snap Count—Supported by RMC GUI and can operate without a license. Expiration policy—Snapshots are deleted from HPE 3PAR StoreServ after the policy expires. Retention policy— Virtual lock feature available with HPE 3PAR StoreServ. This policy restricts deletion of snapshots and ensures that the retention time is not exceeded. The following are policies of Recovery Set: • • 114 For synchronous, the policy can be the same for both local and remote. For periodic, the policies can be: Snapshot creation and HPE 3PAR StoreServ replication modes ◦ • • • If a snapshot is created specifying any policy, the policy set on Recovery Set (if exists) is overridden and the Snapshot Set policy is applied on both local and remote appliance. ◦ If a snapshot is created without specifying any policy, the policy set on Recovery Set (if exists) is applied on both local and remote appliance. Either time or numeric based policies can be applied. Mixed based policy is not supported. Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends you to refresh a policy before creation of a Snapshot Set. In numeric policy set, Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends you to use removeOldestSnap:true so that subsequent snapshots can be created. Regulatory information 131 Using REST APIs REST (Representational State Transfer) is a web service that uses basic Create, Read, Update, and Delete (CRUD) operations performed on resources using HTTP POST, GET, PUT, and DELETE. RMC appliance has a resource-oriented architecture that provides a uniform REST interface. Every resource has one URI (Uniform Resource Identifier) and represents a physical device or logical construct. You can use REST API to interact with HPE 3PAR StoreServ and HPE StoreVirtual. For more information on using REST APIs, see HPE Recovery Manager Central REST API Implementation Guide. Resource operations RESTful APIs are stateless. The resource manager maintains the resource state that is reported as the resource representation. The client maintains the application state and the client might manipulate the resource locally, but until a PUT or POST is made, the resource as known by the resource manager is not changed. Operation HTTP action Description Create POST resource URI (payload = resource data) Creates resources. A synchronous POST returns the newly created resource. An asynchronous POST returns a TaskResource URI in the Location header. This URI tracks the progress of the POST operation. Read GET resource URI Returns the requested resource representations. Update PUT resource URI (payload = update data) Updates an existing resource. Delete DELETE resource URI Deletes the specified resource. Return Codes Return code Request Description 200 OK The request has succeeded. The information returned with the response is dependent on the method used in the request. 202 Accepted The request is accepted for processing, but the processing is not completed. 204 No Content The server has fulfilled the request but may not return an entity-body, instead the server might return updated meta information. Successful 2xx Table Continued 132 Using REST APIs Return code Request Description 400 Bad Request Due to malformed syntax, the server cannot understand the request. The client must not repeat the request without modifications. 401 Unauthorized The request requires user authentication. The response must include a WWW-Authenticate header field containing a challenge applicable to the requested resource. 403 Forbidden The server understood the request, but is refusing to fulfill it. Authorization will not help and the request must not be repeated. 404 Not Found The server has not found anything matching the Request-URI. No indication is given of whether the condition is temporary or permanent. Client Error 4xx Server Error 5xx 500 500 Internal Server Error The server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request. 502 Bad Gateway The server, while acting as a gateway or proxy, received an invalid response from the upstream server it accessed in attempting to fulfill the request. 503 Service Unavailable The server is unable to handle the request due to a temporary overloading or maintenance of the server. The implication is that the server condition is temporary which will be alleviated after some delay. URI format All URIs point to resources. The client does not need to create or modify URIs. The URI for a resource is static and uses the format https://{appl}/rest/rm-central/v1/resource-category/ <resource-id> where: Code Description https://{appl} Appliance address /rest/rm-central/v1 Type of URI /resource category Category of the resource. For example, server-profiles /resource instance ID Identifier of specific resource instance (optional) URI format 133 Resource model format The resources support JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) for exchanging data using a REST API. If not otherwise specified in the REST API operation, the default is JSON. Logging in to the appliance using REST APIs When you log in to the appliance using the login-sessions REST API, an auth (authentication) token is returned. Use this auth token in all subsequent REST API operations in the auth header, except as noted in REST API Request Headers. By default, the auth token is valid for 1 hour. For example, POST /rest/rm-central/v1/storage-systems returns the details of a newly created Storage System in the response body immediately. An asynchronous task, such as creating a Recovery Set returns the URI of a Task Tracker resource model. You can use the Task Tracker resource model URI to list the status of the operation. Task Tracker resource When you make an asynchronous REST API operation, HTTP status 202 Accepted is returned and the URI of a Task Tracker resource model is returned in the Location header of the response. You can then perform a GET request on the Task Tracker model URI to poll for the status of the asynchronous operation. The Task Tracker model also contains the name and URI of the resource that is affected by the task in the associated Resource attribute. Error handling If an error occurs during a REST API operation, a 4xx (client-side) or 5xx (appliance) error is returned along with an error message (ErrorMessage resource model). The error message contains a description and might contain recommended actions to correct the error. A successful REST API POST operation returns the newly created resource (synchronous) or a TaskResource URI in the Location header (asynchronous). Querying resources using common REST API parameters You can use a set of common parameters to customize the results returned from a GET operation, such as sorting or filtering. Each REST API specification lists the set of available common parameters. For more information to use REST APIs, see HPE Recovery Manager Central REST API Implementation Guide. Deploying an OVF template is similiar to deploying a virtual machine from a template. mebibyte The mebibyte is a multiple of the unit byte for digital information. The binary prefix mebi means 220, so 1 mebibyte is 1,048,576 bytes. The unit symbol for the mebibyte is MiB. Thick Provision Eager Zeroed A type of thick virtual disk that supports clustering features, such as Fault tolerance. Space required for the virtual disk is allocated at creation time. In contrast to the flat format, the data remaining on the physical device is zeroed out when the virtual disk is created. It might take much longer to create disks in this format than to create in other types. Thick Provisioned Lazy Zeroed Creates a virtual disk in a default thick format. Space required for the virtual disk is allocated when the virtual disk is created. Data remaining on the physical device is not erased during creation, but is zeroed out on demand at a later time on first write from the virtual machine. Thin Provision Saves storage space. For the thin disk, you provision as much datastore space as the disk would require based on the value that you enter for the disk size. However, the thin disk starts small and at first, uses only as much datastore space as the disk needs for its initial operations. vApps vApps is a preconfigured virtual machine that packages applications with the operating system that they require. Virtual Machine A Virtual Machine (VM) is a software computer that, like a physical computer, runs an operating system and applications. Multiple virtual machines can operate on the same host system concurrently. 136 Glossary
