BOUGHT & PAID FOR: ANITERE FLORES SUCCUMBS TO PRESSURE FROM BIG OIL Flores Silent On Drilling In District National Preserve Lack Of Action In Line With History Of Supporting Big Oil Interests MIAMI – As community leaders and environmental advocacy organizations express mounting disappointment over the recent decision to allow oil exploration in Big Cypress National Preserve, State Senator Anitere Flores remains silent despite the preserve’s location in her district. Conservation non-profits including the Natural Resources Defense Council, National Parks Conservation Association and South Florida Wildlands Association have spoken out against the testing of Big Cypress National Preserve, warning that drilling can cause lasting damage to the ecosystem. They note that “seismic testing and increased drilling in Big Cypress, which is currently home to two active wells, would [also] harm the adjacent Everglades National Park.” And yet, Anitere Flores is mum on this issue of critical local importance. Her deafening silence raises the question: does Flores stand with the Big Oil companies who fill her campaign coffers or the constituents and area she represents? Big Oil companies including Exxon, Spectra and others have poured cash into Flores’s campaigns over the years. What’s more, Senator Flores has voted to permit offshore drilling in the past – a dangerous threat to South Florida’s economy and environment. Senator Anitere Flores ought to do the right thing and hold these polluters accountable before it is too late. Her district’s future depends on it. ###
