Athlete / Parent / Coach Relationship
Communication among the player, parent and coach is necessary.
The communication the coach will convey to your son or daughter will include: expectations the
coaching staff has for your son or daughter, locations and times of all practices and contests, team
requirements, team and individual camps, procedures for injuries, team rules/guidelines.
The type of communication the coaching staff expects from the players includes: notification of any
schedule conflicts in advance and special concerns in regards to the coaching staff's philosophy or
expectations.
As the player becomes involved in the Mile High Wolverines, they will experience some of the most
rewarding moments of their life. It is important to understand that there may also be times when things
do not go the way the player wishes. At these times discussions with the coaching staff is encouraged.
Appropriate concerns a parent should discuss with the coach: the treatment of the player, both mentally
and physically, ways to help the athlete improve, concerns about the players behavior.
Issues not appropriate for a parent to discuss with coach: playing time, team strategies, and other
program members.
There are situations that may require a conference between the coach and parent. It is important that
both parties involved have a clear understanding of the other's position. When these conferences are
necessary, please call the coach to set up an appointment. Please do not attempt to confront a coach
before or after a contest. These can be emotional times for both a parent and a coach.
Parent Participation Opportunities:
The Mile High Wolverines parents are openly encouraged to participate in our team. There are many
areas where parents can contribute, whether skilled in football or basketball or not. They include the
following:
1. Statisticians: Game stats are an important part of developing players. To accurately track player
performance, we need stat keepers and scorebook keepers at games.
2. Trainer: Anyone who knows CPR and has basic background in first aid is welcomed to volunteer for
this position with their team. Unfortunately our players do risk injury every time they step on the
court.
3. Team videographer: Video Tapes of games are an exceptional tool to aid the coach in determining
areas needing improvement.
4. Fund Raising Committee: Parents who serve on this committee would be in charge of carrying out
the current fund raising plan, and developing new methods for obtaining funds for the club.
Mile High Wolverines Code of Conduct:
Dedication: Giving total effort every time you take the field or floor, whether for a game or practice.
This will allow you and the team the best possible outcome.
Accountability: We will all make mistakes, so be responsible for what you do and learn from it. Be
determined to get better each time you step onto the field or court.
Pride: Having pride in yourself and how you play will bring you closer to being the best you can be.
Coachability: Even though you heard a speech many times before or did the drill a hundred times and
know the drill, you and the entire team must listen to all suggestions about how the team could get
even better. Always be willing to try.
Unselfishness: It takes all team members to make a team. Without all players working together on the
field or court and without communication both on and off the field or court, chances on winning the
game are slim. Good players will help and encourage each other to play better.
Mental Toughness: Set your mind to stay focused on the game and do not let anything steer you from
it. Other than putting a "W" in the win column, nothing defeats the opposition better than a mentally
focused team.
Loyalty: Without the loyalty to the coaches, to your teammates and to yourself, we will not reach the
goals we are striving for.
Patience: You must understand that everyone is not as gifted. The more gifted players must help their
teammates, devoting as much time to their development as needed during practice and encouraging
them in games. A team is only as strong as its weakest player.
Humility: Never show an opponent any disrespect on or off the court. Handle praise and criticism
equally well. Never put yourself above the team.
